Best Buy Finally Has Some Competition

Thank god, there is another electronics retailer coming to town. Hopefully it will help break up Best Buys monopoly.

Yeah, I've been to a couple down in Henrico and Chesterfield. They're okay, they don't have an extensive selection like Best Buy, they seem to focus on appliances more than electronics.

Blessed are the murderous.

How is it a Monopoly? It's not like Best Buy sells stuff that you can't get anywhere else. Or do they? I've only been in a Best Buy a couple of times, so I'm probably talking out my ass.

Best Buy has had plenty of competition. This is just what happens to it...

Ever since Circuit City crashed, I've been longing for some competition. I have nothing against Best Buy, but there are always certain things that you can get at one store, which you can't the other.

It's usually regarding the deals and such. We used Circuit City for our vehicle's audio, but we usually kept to Best Buy for music, computers, etc.

Best Buy's biggest competition these days is the internet. Go browse at Best Buy, figure out what you want, then order it online for less money

I have to admit that I love Best Buy. If it were a chick, I would fuck it. They have great selection and great financing. Sure, they don't have informed salesmen, but I fucking research that stuff ahead of time on my own anyway, so a MyerEmco-type dude isn't going to help me. Frankly, I hate speaking with salespeople and I would rather get the item myself and put it on a cart instead of waiting around for some dude to pull the shit out of a warehouse (e.g. Circuit City).

I fucking LOVE Best Buy. It's my Wal-Mart (which I hate).

Is Crazy Eddies still around? I thought they went under like 15 years ago when the owner was arrested for fraud and also skimming money.

Yea. I watched an episode of "Masterminds" featuring Crazy Eddies. Most of the shows are about heists, smugglers, and counterfeiters. The show is a documentary about how they did it leading up to how they got caught. I attached the first episode that I ever saw. From then on, I was hooked. I couldn't find the one on Crazy Eddies though.

The HHGreg website seems to have that creepy look like Circuit Shitty did. Loud, in your face and the colors, ick. Might be following the City into the crapper. Best Buy guys are prob saying bring it on, homez. Remember that DIVX thing they had as a side biz? DVDs that self-destructed after a few days? WOW, that went well. Imagine the idiot who sold that to their board. Bah. Prob worked at Barney Frank's office after that gig.

Ditto with the other poster - wish Fryes would make it out here. Much better and geekier selection. Then again, if you're not shopping at Newegg or Amazon, you're paying way too much at Stinky Buy.

Tho, I do like that Stinky Buy has comfy home entertainment kiosks. I usually go in there after a few drinks and relax for bout 30 mins with some free 3D TV action. I swear, next time I'm going to bring some pR0n DVDs of my own and watch them.

Best Buy is terrible for small accessory type items, but that's where they make their killing. $20 for a 25-foot ethernet cable (cat 5) - are you kidding me? I got it on Amazon for like $2. Same with an extender female/female rj-45 plug I wanted - $10 at the store for what should have been a $1 item.

I wish there was a Frys around here. They are the best electronics store every and very very good prices.

I only use best buy if i want to have a easy place to return stuff to or need to try before I buy.

Other than that I use newegg and amazon, mostly newegg.

Best Buy is only good for buying old crappy nostalgia movies and for screwing around on their keyboards. The cheapest cd you can get there is $14 (if your stupid enough to buy a cd) and they sell dishwashers, refridgerators and candy for some reason. Best Buy is to guys what shoe stores are to women; you look around and touch a little bit, but after an hour you walk out with nothing.

Pretty much totally agree. On the occasions I need something immediately, Micro Center does the job for me. I do like that place.

MicroCenter is a bit quirky but not bad.

Fryes kicks absolute ass. If you've never been to one, you will just not understand. Those who have are uniform in their awe...

Totally agree - if you don't need something right away the best place I have found online is Monoprice (http://www.monoprice.com/home/index.asp). The miscellaneous parts I needed for my home theater (e.g., HDMI cables, bulk Cat5 cable, speaker wire, wall mount for my plasma, HD antenna) cost 70% less than what I would have paid at Best Buy. The biggest ripoff is Monster cable - with the possible exception of running a broadcast facility the cables are the same.

If you need something right away you should check Ceder PC in Vienna - they have private label cables and computer parts for a fraction of what you would pay at a big box store.

I never buy that shit. And you don't have to.

Here's the deal. You want a $2,500 top-of-the-line HDTV. You can go online and stick the thing on you Visa at 20% APR and pay it off over two years. Or you can go to Best Buy with its 0% financing for three years (or four, or five, depending on the size of the purchase) and pay the fucking thing off in 18 months!

I do this all of the time. Why not? You are actually beating inflation by doing it! And I have compared costs for the sets, and they aren't any better at COSTCO or Wal-Mart (if they even carry the set, which they usually don't when you are talking about something with that level of quality).

Costco has a decent selection, and you can return it if you don't like it. BB won't take back a set without a restocking fee.

I use BB financing too, but if one can pay something off quickly (same month or maybe in two months) it may be worth it to use a regular CC if they offer warranty period doubling or anything like that.

True. But I'm not one of those people, so I like keeping my cash flow free and using their credit to get the newest shit.

You're preaching to the choir, I've paid one late fee in my life.

All of the deals the CC companies used to offer with 0% balance tranfers and no interest for months and months were subdisidzed by the profit they made from people who wouldn't stay on top of their payments like that. All a numbers game, enough people pay interest and penalties that they can offer the responsible a little perk to get their money too.

I had a buddy who used to get every credit card he could and shuffle around 0% balance transfers, cash advances and interest free periods constantly. He ran up huge bills and was able to float them for years and years, never paying a dime of interest. All over now with the new economy. I never thought it was above board though he swore it was.

Sad to say, but I think the debate was whether or not 311 belonged in the Hall of Fame and EB chimed in with that Linkin Park shit. I'm not kidding.
