...."Witnesses told Ward that the officer swerved to avoid a blue pickup truck. According to Fairfax County police, preliminary investigation shows that the cruiser's lights and siren were activated...."

I know that it's too early to tell, but it sounds as if the pickup truck might be to blame here. I witness people doing stupid stuff around emergency vehicles all the time.

Wow, that Crown Vic sure relocated a big chunk of concrete (the light pole)!

I occasionally go to the County garage at Newington, and you ought to see all wrecked cruisers down there...the po-po crash a LOT of cars.

Yeah, but the crash rate is actually quite low when compared with all the miles they all drive yearly.

WJLA's website shows that police reported the officer was en route to assist another officer who was in a foot chase. Ask any officer -- a foot chase is one of the most dangerous things that police officers do. Not only is there the danger of the suspect (and his buddies) assaulting the officer to facilitate his getaway, but there is also the issue of the officer running on difficult terrain and injuring himself. Therefore, I believe that driving fast with lights and siren activated would be justified, as long as this officer was one of the closest available units.

Based on the limited information available, it sounds like somebody pulled out into the officer's path, and he took evasive action to avoid injuring any citizens. It appears that the officer did a good job of preventing anybody else from getting hurt in this accident.

Read the paper. He was heading to an officer in trouble call. The other driver failed to yield the right-of-way.

Yes, even I, a noted cop hater, will stand up for the officer here. He seems to actually be pretty awesome to avoid making that mess bigger.

The initial report of the pole falling onto the SUV was still hilarious, though.

You get great satisfaction reading about the misfortune of others don't you?

hey genius, most comedy anywhere and everywhere is based on the misfortune (including being mocked) of others. wily coyote, daffy duck, yosemite sam, seinfeld, friends and just about any other comedy both in tv, movie and comic media. the rest is usually the unexpected (including play-on words and innuendo). this incident could be considered funny because it's both unexpected and it's at another persons expense. your post in fact is sarcasm implying that he is in somehow a bad person for it an thus being unfortunate for him and giving you satisfaction by posting it for everyone to see. you are the real joke here.

This is obviously a cop or somebody that works for the government.

Nobody was inside the SUV, and likely they had insurance. Nobody had any true misfortune here.

But you do enjoy being overly sensitive to every little thing, don't you, Observer?

Let me recap the situation. Officer driving a marked police car with lights and siren on to back up an officer who is chasing a felon (stolen car) on foot. Stupid idiot pulls out in front of responding officer, who swerves and hits a concrete pole so he does not crash into idiot driver. Yeah, I guess you could call that stupid and careless... Toolbag.
