NEWS BREAK: Is road salting just salting Bill Clinton's pockets? Does it really help?

The vapor pressure of pure water at 20 deg C is 0.0231 atm while the vapor pressure of seawater is less with the composition listed above is 0.0226 atm. The higher the concentration of ions (or molecules) in solution, the higher is the boiling point of the solution. ICE evaporates also, at rate 0.006 atm

This means a salted road will STAY WET LONGER, meaning it is more likey to be exposed to freezing since road water will be around longer (and we know it does freeze).

... possibly leading to a road like this

((the benefit, other than destroying bridges and rusting and total lossing all vehicles in northern states, is, it melts a few hours earlier in the day - so if there's a "build up" one day of melting will melt more of it. but the benefit is not without LOSSES))

Does ICE evaporate? Yes. Evaporation of a solid is called sublimation. This happens to any solid with an appreciable vapor pressure. Ice will evaporate as long as the relative humidity is less than 100%.

ice evaporates slowly (sublimation) whether temperatures melt it to water or Not
