Health department reported cases per CDC as of Dec 24 last 7 days. Of 100k population - Fairfax County 1 in 280, Loudoun 1 in 233, and DC 1 in 90. Major surge.

If you have car in shop for days or not have needed 2nd car in household, these alternatives not great now:

* Lyft/Uber - how many drivers can clean car after every passenger. If you are in Herndon, Reston, or Chantilly, you risk a driver dropping off passenger just before at Dulles Airport from DC.

* Fairfax Connector / Metrobus - they cannot clean bus after every run. Fairfax Connector sanitizes once a day. Though masks are required, high usage routes inside or not far from Beltway are not socially distanced. And Metrobuses many of drivers from DC. Use to use buses for commuting years ago.

What are better alternatives with unavailable private car situation?

" Rental car
" Own bicycle - great exercise on 50 degree winter day if have trail available or lightly used road for small errands not far away.
" Powered scooters and the like.

Stats for Fairfax County and Loudoun are higher than yesterday, not as bad as DC, but still quite high.

Virginia Governor Northam says 'Not wanted, not welcome'. No face mask, you will be denied use of Lyft, Uber, Fairfax Connector, Metrobus, and other buses and trains, and if you take off your mask during transit, you risk getting kicked off. On planes you risk arrest by the feds for not wearing a mask. At medical facilities, Fair Oaks Hospital is one which go for a few appointments, greeters just inside the main entrance front door, will deny you entry any further if you refuse to wear a mask. Other places, private businesses vary, can deny you entry into their establishments or kick you out for not wearing a mask. Face masks are better than nothing.

Uber sux & Lyft sux even more. The drivers smell, their card smell, they don't know where they're going & they try to get busy with drunk women. Except for the last part, they're just like taxis used to be. The only reason the taxi drivers didn't try to get busy with drunk women was they didn't want to lose their licenses & they got checked out by the popo. These Uber & Lyft drivers get "checked out" by 1 of these co. s that do $5 checks on the internet.

Uber & Lyft pay their drivers crap, which is why they only get all these crappy drivers.

Meanwhile, taxis have got better, so call a real taxi.

Uber and Lyft drivers are rated by passengers, which incentivises them to provide very good service and clean cars in most cases. If driver is rated too low by many passengers, they are removed from the platform. Also with Lyft, you are never paired with a driver you rate 3 out of 5 stars or below, Only had two drivers over five years gave 3 stars. Vast majority gave 5 stars and less than a dozen 4 stars. Even had one with a plastic divider between the front and back seats for COVID protection. Rode with one from Clifton once from the hospital in his sci-fi car where door hinged from car roof, Biggest issue locally are some drivers not speak English well, especially Uber around Metro stations. At least with Lyft must have a green card, be in USA one year if not a citizen, and newer car. Lyft and Uber drivers are paid per trip, and most drivers arrive within 10 minutes even in outer suburbs.

Red Top Taxi at least here, good luck them arriving evens in 45 minutes. Only use them where they have a taxi stand and have an emergency. Or had a medical procedures and risk of vomiting as Lyft and Uber charges $250 to clean up the driver's private car. Also taxi drivers who rent their cars from the taxi company for $100 daily after which they profit from fares, and no incentive to clean car or provide good service since they are not rated by passengers. They also frown on credit card payments which they have to pay a 6% processing fee.

Someone who know middle aged teaches auto mechanics in FCPS. He was asked by another employee of the school if he could work on his car. After close contact with the other employee looking together at the car's problems underneath, the other employee shares his family is sick with COVID though he is not visibly sick at the time. The teacher is now sick with COVID, not omicron, though he was fully vaxed and boosted.

Unless desparate like a car breakdown for days and must get somewhere critically locally, not using any bus, Lyft, or Uber with this current major surge.

Not any significant changes since yesterday at https://covid.cdc.gov/covid-data-tracker/#county-view?list_select_state=all_states&list_select_county=all_counties&data-type=Risk except 1 in 7 general hospital beds in Fairfax and Loudoun occupied by COVID patients, and DC its 1 in 4.5. If can avoid it, not want to be an inpatient locally in the hospital right now.

Am scared, car broke down, and not want to use Fairfax Connector, Metrobus, Metrorail, Uber, and Lyft until these surge numbers go down. CDC says close 15 minute exposure, if that, to a COVID person in public, can get you a case of COVID, especially if not at all or not fully vaccinated and boosted, a young child, immuno compromised, have other health issues, or a breakthrough case. Masks better than nothing, but not 100% guaranteed protection.

If have own car, curbside grocery pickup running better than delivery in western Fairfax. Giant Greenbriar and Walmart Chantilly first slots tomorrow Friday 1/7 and Saturday 1/8 respectively. For delivery, same Walmart 1st available Sunday 1/9 and Giant from central warehouse not until Monday 1/10.

Perfect storm, snow overnight and COVID worker infections causing short staffing. Unlike previous pickup orders, one had for Giant Sunday 1/2 for about 25 items asked to text first time ever On my way. Suspect saving current limited manpower at store fulfilling orders for those actually coming for pick up and not no shows. Was surprised only 4 items out of stock.

Lyft and Uber in surge mode this AM with fewer drivers available, snow, possibly drivers not driving because of COVID. Trip from western Fairfax to Fair Oaks Hospital priced about 50-75% higher than normal right now.

Use https://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/bustime/eta/eta.jsp to find out if your commuter bus is on time or not, some delays and reroutings with snow, of course if want to risk getting COVID from another passenger, even though masks are required.

Despite the limited, misleading, and sometimes exaggerated news on the TV mainstream media especially locally in the interests of increasing their advertising revenue or furthering their political agenda, COVID is bad here in No VA and elsewhere nationally and touching the vaxed and boosted of those we know.

Personally:
- Around 20 gathered out of state for hours in a home for Christmas. All vaxed, but not all children boosted. Oldest in 80s in hospital ICU. Several others infected with milder sickness. I did not go to the gathering.
- 4 others locally, adults all vaxed and boosted, except one young teen just vaxed. One sick at home in western Fairfax, others quarantined at home with mild symptoms.

According to CDC stats late yesterday in last 7 days, admitted to hospitals 275 in Fairfax County and 600 in DC.

Took a walk outside yesterday afternoon for fresh air passing a couple of Fairfax Connector bus stops where expecting 2-3 passengers waiting even on weekend, minutes before bus arrival per GPS tracking, there were none. Maybe a fluke, but wondering how many Connector buses as a taxpayer they are running empty or nearly so due to passenger COVID concerns. With the black tinted windows on the buses, hard to see say from another car if anybody riding buses. Western Fairfax ridership on buses always lower due to higher auto ownership. But what about other more transit dependent areas of the county now with COVID spread? Say Annandale central, Route 1, Herndon, sections of Fairfax City with GMU? Just curious as a taxpayer. Also it could be your low paid house cleaner still yet riding the bus.

Ordered N95, USA American made masks with two head bands with tighter fit, not the KN95 Chinese made ones with just ear loops. Watch out for counterfeits, even on Amazon, but CDC has list by manufacturer and model of authentic ones which can Google or will try to post link later.

Company I ordered N95 ones from in Texas as 3rd party Amazon seller checked their website which they have CDC/OSHA government certificates for theirs. Though mine already shipped and on way, got a mass email from them last night at moment they are a few days backlogged in processing with current surge. Other sellers of N95 masks, some are backlogged with weeks of orders.

N95 masks are called that for a reason, 95%+ effective, not,100%. Same ones many medical care workers having to use. These disposable ones in quantity typically $1.50 to $2 each.

If no choice but to use bus, Lyft, or Uber in the DMV metro national COVID epicenter, N95 masks way better, but not perfect.

If you or someone close to you or in your household is immuno compromised, you have to take every reasonable precaution. People take precautions applicable to the own situation, which may be none unless forced by law or rule by business, or limited, or more extensive. For most medical facilities, Lyft, Uber, buses, planes, and trains, and some other places, there are requirements you have to follow, or you will not get service or maybe get arrested as on a plane or excessively coughing on someone in public while you have COVID.

I agree that it is essential to follow the requirements, though most people seem to forget about Covid. Yes, most of us are vaccinated, but it doesn't mean we can't catch the virus. As for ridesharing companies, my friend called the lyft customer service number https://lyft.pissedconsumer.com/customer-service.html and was told that wearing masks on transportation may still be required by law in some areas.
