Mount Vernon's head football coach, Monty Fritts, announced that he is stepping down as HC. He was the HC for 7 seasons, starting in 2016, and took over a team that had won 2 games in 2 years then immediately turned the team around. He lead the team to a 40-26 record with 4 playoff appearances and 2 district championships during his tenure.

Look for Henderson to take the MTV job
He has a history with the highway being at WP for a number of years.
WTW is not a good fit for him

That’s interesting regarding Fritts. Wonder where he will end up. I can see Henderson leaving WTW after one year and I mean hell the national district means he won’t lose every division game by 50+ !

Yes, Mt. Vernon won 19 total games in the seven years prior to Fritts' arrival (19-53). He immediately turned the program around and did just a fantastic job overall.

Refs call it complete even when they do drop them.

But yea, Westfield doesn't look like they practiced this week. That was a totally un-Simmons-like performance.

Doc has been at Lake Braddock for 6 seasons now and they have had more talent than anyone else in the region every year.

Again, this year was a major disappointment with all the talent they had.
According to Doc he has at least 5-6 D1 players on this team, WTF happened?
63-21 come on, was Fairfax that much better? Or did Lake Braddock get outcoached?

So tired of hearing all the excuses from the Doc supporters.
Best staff in the state? That staff isn't even in the top 3 in their district!

Man, these Concorde District refs sure hate Westfield this season. Stole a huge second half interception from Westfield in the Madison game. Stole two TDs from them in the Chantilly game including a bizarre OPI against Westfield while letting Chantilly DBs maul Westfield receivers before the ball arrived multiple times. Now in this Centreville game they call a juggled and dropped pass complete and steal another obvious TD from Westfield that would have pulled Westfield within a score. Someone needs to start paying the refs, so more competent zebras can be hired. The worst part is we need these biased buffoons so badly we can't even verbally abuse them at games anymore. All this idiocy and I can't even yell at them. Sad.

Yes, LB choked yet again. But the big story is the possible numerous illegal transfers that Fairfax has on the their roster this year who weren’t there a year ago. Kid from Hylton, Marshall, Woodson, etc.. Let’s see someone turn them into VHSL, and then Trey will have to sit out next weeks game the same way Doc had to this week.

To many injuries
To many distractions
The other team had better players, coaches and that's not fair
Schedule is too hard
Players don't listen
Coach had to sit out, that's not fair
Not enough support from the Administration

How about this, stop complaining, Doc has the best talent in the region every year and can't win...that's the bottom line!

Unfortunately I did not get a chance to watch any games on Friday night. It looks like a lot went expected however.

1. Lake Braddock @ Fairfax (-9)
- Fairfax won rather easily 63-21. I can honestly say I was surprised by the final. Did anyone have the Bruins losing by 6 touchdowns?

2. Riverbend @ Stone Bridge (-24)
- Stone Bridge won 50-29, failing to cover. Very familiar territory for the Bulldogs however with another deep playoff run.

3. Westfield @ Centreville (-21)
- Centreville won the rematch 35-6. Westfield will classify this as a down year for their standards as they finish the year 7-5.

4. West Springfield @ South County (-7)
- The Stallions covered rather easily, 48-28. Don't know if Baskerville suited up for the Spartans, if he didn't a 20 point defeat makes a lot more sense.

5. Yorktown @ Madison (-7)
- Madison corrected their earlier loss to Yorktown by winning 21-7 in a game that matters more. Also, Yorktown did host Madison in September, thank you to the user that corrected me. Was going through my notes too fast!

It looks like all games will be played on Saturday this weekend which is par for Region Championship games. Essentially every team that has made it this far has been here before and is familiar with the circumstances. I can’t wait to see how Fairfax looks this weekend. Its been a while since they have been here. Every team has earned their way here and I don’t think there’s a bad team playing this weekend. Although I do not do Freedom-Woodbridge spreads, I just want to reiterate they are the best team in the area this year. Would probably beat every FFX school by 3+ scores. Lets get into the slate this weekend…

1. Madison (-3) @ Centreville
- Game of the Week. Centreville has had problems with Madison in the past and I have no reason to believe they will right that. Madison just seems to have their number and while I do think this is the best game this week, I don’t see the Wildcats seeing another week.

2. Mountain View @ Stone Bridge (-14)
- Stone Bridge shut these guys out last year 37-0 when they met for the Region crown. May be a similar result on Saturday although I don’t think they will pitch another shutout with this year’s defense. Bulldogs still win big…

3. South County @ Fairfax (-9)
- These two did not meet in the regular season which should be a felony, the Patriot District was very deep this year (Yes, better than the Concorde!) but Fairfax has not been in a big game like this. I think if they jump ahead early they can cruise but I am not 100% sold on them winning a close game against a Stallions team that has played in this game many times. Fairfax is the better team in this game, its just a matter of them proving it. They have one hell of a chance to do so this weekend.

Nobody is shocked Doc got caught up. Blatant cheating and easily verified. Nobody believes he misunderstood the rule, but he has a little wiggle room.

On the other hand, Centreville has not followed the VHSL 40 quarter rule. All one must do is throw in the video of their JV/varsity guys. Those guys are over 50 quarters. That rule is as clear as it gets.

My point is that the LB kids were punished because their coach missed the game, right? If you agree call Bill Curran and ask that he look into the 40 quarter rule. The VHSL does not have an investigative unit. It's all self reporting or Curran. Fair is fair. Remember Doc is part Native American so he gets pinched. Shields?? A lot of good teams may break the 40 quarters rule, especially if you have been blowing teams out all year. Basically, you are just trying to get thru the game and put in the JV players so the blowout doesn't get worse. Otherwise, you will have people complaining of teams running up the score. Thats a minor infraction at best and also good for the other team. No team should be penalized for that!

The Braddock coaches were blatantly violating the practice rules all season long.
They got what they deserved, and it could have worse!

100% agree on LB coaches. Blatant disregard for the rules. I’ll be shocked if this staff returns next season. The school can’t have employees going behind their backs like this.

Are we talking keeping track of minutes or simply taking a snap in 40 quarters? If it's just taking a snap I don't think many teams are not violating that rule.

One minority coach in the county has been reported to Bill Curran at least 3 times for actions that have gotten other coaches fired. As soon as Curran/FCPS realize who the coach is, everything gets dropped. No return phone calls, emails or any other contacts. So the only part his ethnicity played in his punishment was ignoring it all season or lightning the penalty.

Correctly picked Fairfax to both win and cover. I went to this game. Fairfax jumped out to a 21-0 lead. It was 28-7 at the half and Fairfax held a 35 point lead in the third quarter, meaning a running clock. Braddock scored late to cut the lead to 56-21, but on the ensuing onside kick, they kicked it directly to a Fairfax player who had a clear path to the endzone. So the six touchdown margin is a bit misleading, but even a five touchdown win would have been more than anyone expected.

I think this is a good assessment of this game. If the game is close, South County will win, but if Fairfax can get out to a comfortable lead, I think they win. Fairfax has the feel of a team of destiny this year, so I'm going to take Fairfax to win and cover.

Funny how bad the Lake Braddock QB looked when he was under pressure. Not the same guy who torched crappy defenses for much of the season. He looked horrendous. The Soco QB could be the next hyped up (yet really average) QB who gets exposed.

I’m surprised the local news media that covers these games hasn’t done a story on Doc being suspended for the game. That’s kind of a big deal. I wonder if Fairfax HS having a couple of players possibly illegally attending their school (a Hylton kid, a Marshall kid, etc) will get Trey in hot water soon?

What you think of the 40 quarter rule is beside the point. You cant decide which rules to follow. The rule is on the books for safety reasons. A Centreville kid was hurt in the game Friday. A minor player that wont be missed. But what if he really got hurt? The lawyers expose the 40 quarter rule and .....Do you think saying others do it or well he only played 2 snaps in week 3 is gonna cut it? Tell Bill Curran. Have him ask risk management. Lets see what they say. Alas it would be more bad press after Doc. FCPS is a joke

From the VHSL Handbook:

68-1-4 No member school shall play more than 10 football games during any one season,
exclusive of play-off games authorized by a group board, nor more than an average of one
game per week by the same team. By group board adoption, schools in that classification
may permit football players to compete in no more than 40 quarters. Note: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and
6 Boards have adopted the 40-quarter rule. When member schools have been reclassified,
the present rule shall apply until the new group's membership can reconsider the 40-quarter
rule option.

Remember that JV teams only play 8 games so all those players have 8 quarters to spare. That means they can play mop up time in 8 varsity 4th quarters and still be clear of breaking the rule even if they played in every minute of every JV game.
Also, playoff quarters do not count towards the 40 so nothing the past two weeks matters.

VHSL has allowed themselves to get dragged into a childish game of “gotcha”. They should require all football programs in the county to report whether or not they hold meetings on Sundays. Anyone who believes there was only one program doing this probably also believes all those Fairfax players belong at Fairfax HS. Seems as if the Doc character has decided not to snitch on the others. So much for the stand-up guy theory about Doc
I believe Docs exact words were "everyone else is doing it, why am I the only one being penalized?" So yeah, he snitched!

Smart of Tre to bring Gerry onboard. Tre is not good enough coach to do this by himself. Also use Gerry to help expand his recruiting boundaries as well as to do the X’s & O’s.

Resto has shown he can't be perfect against good defenses so that's probably not going to happen. He'll hit some deep throws but that's about it. If he throws a lot in the middle of the field he will inevitably throw an interception or two.

Madison is probably going to eat the clock with balanced attack, try to keep the game close and hope to win it on the last possession. Centreville will probably try to win the game with a handful of big throws/trick plays. Same old. So you know who has the edge in those kind of games.

Not sure where you get that idea. Tre calls O and D. Gerry coaches special teams. He has turned the fairfax program around. Tre won at SLakes and Woodson. He would have won at Robinson too if he was given a real chance. Community ran him out. Vossler hasn’t done much there and his stone age offense never allows them to really compete.

Been watching Concorde District football all fall so decided to drive to Fairfax.

Fairfax 7-0: #28 Horacek 10 yard TD run (on a fourth and 5)
SoCo 7-7: #2 Hoskins 65 yard TD pass from #5 Dennis
Fairfax 14-7: #6 Lyerly 25 yard TD pass from #7 Worthen
SoCo 14-14: #7 Greer 5 yard TD run
Fairfax 16-14: Safety, #5 Dennis tackled in end zone
Fairfax: 23-14: #5 Rojas 15 yard TD run
Fairfax: 30-14: #5 Rojas 50 yard TD run

That was the scoring (yardage may vary). It was 23-14 at the half and I thought the game could go either way.

Indeed #5 Rojas is an amazing athlete for high school. His speed and quickness was impressive. Not mention he played defense and special teams - and he was making an impact in all three phases of the game. His ability to get to the corner and turn upfield was ridiculous and even if he didn't beat you to the edge he'd just slip your tackle.

That being said this game was winnable for South County. Their coaching staff is clearly in love with the QB who throws a nice ball. Too much I think, Fairfax defense is soft and SoCo could have had a ton more success running the ball on them had they tried more. Instead they just threw a ton and abandoned the running game in the second half leaving their QB alone to face an unimpeded blitz.

The officiating was OK - they didn't call a single penalty until the second half when they really started in on Fairfax with phantom holding calls and then another NOVA ref special - a bizarre defensive pass interference against Fairfax. Yes, I know the ball doesn't have to be catchable and yes, I know you are not allowed to impede the the wide receiver from getting to the ball. But the call in this case really defied the spirit of the rule I thought. The rule does not intend that a DB needs to literally step aside and allow the WR to run past him.

I thought Fairfax coaches did a better job of managing the game than SoCo. They played the common sense percentages in deciding when to punt and when to go for it. It worked out well - they punted at mid-field and pinned SoCo inside the 1 and the next play was a safety. SoCo coaches would never have punted in that situation - they proved that in the second half. But it was a smart move.

Fairfax ran just enough plays to other players to keep Rojas from burning himself out and their first couple of scores came on plays when everyone including myself was certain #5 was getting the ball.

Not a popular opinion I am sure, but I think Madison will win next week. Fairfax and SoCo do not have physical defenses like you find in the Concorde. If Madison comes out with a balanced attack and controls the clock I think they can win. If Fairfax didn't have #5 I don't think the team would be better than a first round playoff loss. Fairfax is definitely beatable.

1. Madison (-3) @ Centreville
- Madison won and covered easily, 22-7. That's 10 straight losses to the Warhawks... Something to be ashamed about. Think Madison could've won by more.

2. Mountain View @ Stone Bridge (-14)
- "Stone Bridge shut these guys out last year 37-0..." Well, y'all, they did it again, 42-0 this time around. Lets see how SB looks next week when they head down to Highland Springs.

3. South County @ Fairfax (-9)
- Fairfax handled business, 30-14, covering easy. They will be battle tested next week at home against Madison.

As I have done in the last few years, I will post spreads for all 6 Classes starting next week. I want to shoutout Kettle Run and Loudoun County for great years. Y’all played great ball and didn’t get the recognition they deserved. Great job boys. Now we’re down to the nitty gritty… Lets go!

1. Madison @ Fairfax (-7)
- Madison has turned around their 0-3 start, but like I said earlier the Patriot was the toughest district this year. Fairfax will have their hands full and I am expecting a close game. Can MAD QB Mac Lewis look as good yesterday. If he does, Madison has a chance. The Warhawks have to find a way to contain Tony Rojas on both sides of the ball. I like Madison because I just don’t know about the Rebels HC…

2. Stone Bridge @ Highland Springs (-15)
- Mickey is 2-3 against HSHS in recent years which is a lot better than his record against Phoebus. I will say, 16 regional titles at Stone Bridge is nuts and you gotta tip your cap to that. But this years Springers team? They’re different. Give me HSHS by 3 scores.

3.Western Branch @ Freedom-Woodbridge (-17)
- Will be Freedom's closest game so far but they will prevail. Best team in VA regardless of class.

Don’t really think there was a size difference. 50 and 54 for Cville are not big. I agree with the playing calling. Running a WR sweep 2 times for zero yards. Running a half back throw 2 times in the red zone. Only threw two deeps balls to the WR, one to the TE that the QB made a bad throw. And the rest were 5 yard outs. There’s never motion or misdirection. So bland. Easy to defend that. They will need to change their offense next year. Only two lineman come back that saw meaningful playing time.

Correctly picked Fairfax to both win and cover. Until Fairfax got their insurance touchdown in the 4th quarter, it looked like this spread would have perfectly called the margin of victory.

I'm old school, so win, lose, or draw I'm with Cville...but alas you're correct. The QB doing what he did was embarrassing. They had an opportunity to win, but that poor display of sportsmanship at that critical moment cost the game. The coaching staff should also be embarrassed. Part of the game is making sure the boys are mentally prepared and they weren't. I'm not entirely convinced it was all the play calling. I mean I've seen the QB throw interceptions and not jump on the ball on bad snaps in tough games, so I might be pass shy too. That's where Madison beat them. They simply wanted it more than the other team on every position on the field and they were tougher mentally.

A few other Cville / Madison observations:

Madison obviously game planned for Ragland... it showed and in post game piece from the Sun Gazette, “He is a good cutback runner, so we were able to box him in on those cutbacks.” The quote goes to say that shutting down the run was a priority. Did Ragland have any plays where he really did his signature cutback runs? They ran a few slants thru the tackle/tight end gap but otherwise getting lateral didn't really work.

Also, look at how they tackled Ragland in open space, many tackles they wrapped him up around the legs, they knew not to take him on high if they could avoid it.

For whatever reason the Madison D gets in other teams heads... and they're resilient if they get burned on something (that long pass down the Cville side ending up with the drive being stopped on 4th down, so it went to waste)

I get going for it on 4th down inside the 35, especially if less than 4 yards to go... though I would need to check the number of times, why not try a field goal? The Cville kicker obviously has some leg; he clocked the ball WAY out of the end zone with the wind a few times, take the points...that might have made the game 14-13 at one point rather than 14-7.

Lastly on either NFHS/MaxPreps/DCNewsNow... look at how the Cville defense tackled Angelo Jreige... and number of runs he just trucked the defenders because they were trying to tackle him high (that's coaching)... he isn't flashy, but he is effective.

Madison will get humbled by fairfax, run defense won't work on that fairfax offense.Madison hasn't faced an athlete like Rojas this season

Fairfax will whither under the physicality of Madison. FHS has not played a team that hits and tackles and just wears you down like MHS at all this season. FHS played a relatively soft schedule of teams who are more apt to line up 5 wide and try to beat you with space. MHS Will come all 4 qtr looking to smash and punch you in the mouth. MHS is way more battle tested. 24-17 MHS.
QB-MHS
RB-even
Oline-MHS
WR-MHS
Dline-MHS
LB- even
DB-MHS
ST-MHS
Coaching staff -MHS

I am also picking Madison to win, but saying they’re even at RB is crazy

Saying they are even at LB and RB is wild

Yes, Rojas is really, really good... However, a running back on a team with weak strength of schedule (3.1) even if #2 in the MaxPreps 6A rankings will rack up a lot of yards against doormat teams like Wakefield, McLean, Edison, et al. The next weakest strength of schedule is #21 Yorktown. Rojas running 14 for 234 yds. against McLean is different than Jreige running 19 for 92 yds. against Stone Bridge.

Don't think "even" is the right term. Different styles, yes. Effective within their offense, yes.

I still think it’s funny the AD at Madison, who’s usually worthless, had to clean up the student section. With all of the bribes he and Pudge take, it’s probably the first time John Kenny’s ever had to do any actual hard work. Clueless.
