Hmmm, didn't realize that. However, 79 really was injured. I guess we'll see which Chantilly and which Westfield team shows up on Friday.

I don't believe it was his choice to leave Hayfield

Woodson was the only job available at the time and they don't have the athletes that he had at WP or Hayfield, they will never win consistently with the existing talent they have
I do think if another opportunity is available for next year...he dips

He shouldn’t get another opportunity. He hasn’t won. The new hayfield coach is doing a better job with that school and Woodson is worse. Embarrassingly bad

He wasn’t fired, he left on his own. He wanted out for a long time. Every offseason he would apply to jobs. Schools that didn’t want him included TC, Justice, Fairfax, Lake Braddock. Probably others. But this is Fairfax county, where coaches just bounce around. If not Woodson, somewhere else.

Shields at Centreville is the same. They both must’ve gotten the cliff notes version of “how to be a head coach.”

Haddock Era.... Cville losing big games has been happening for a while. Westfield beat them in 2014 and the wildcats had a handful of FBS kids.

Cville beat them in the playoffs when Turner was back. Also Tutt didn’t play the second half of the game. Both games were fun to watch. The Gonzaga game should have played the year before. Cville had a better team. The QB was a huge difference. But playing college prep team is hard to do!!

Correction. Refs took down Westfield. Second week in a row Westfield gets screwed by incompetent home-field refs.

You have it correct. They scored three times but had two big TDs stolen from them. Pathetically one-sided officiating.

Not sure what game you watched because those were the right calls. The team looked very uncharacteristically unprepared tonight. Couldn’t get lined up, penalties, and just overall poor play. Chantilly controlled the clock and played a very very boring brand of football that won out in the end. Hats off to them. Coach Simmons might need to step it up now that all those former head coaches and great assistant coaches have left the sideline.

Troll, not a Westfield fan. True, Westfield did not play very well but to say the refs made correct calls on those two plays is questionable, at best. IF they were correct, and I say IF, then at least be consistent. If you call holding on the opposite side of the field away from and behind the play, call holding away from the ball all game long-that sort of thing happens a lot in HS ball. If you call OPI when the defender has his back to the ball and hits the WR, how is that? There was no push off. And call DPI the same way for both line judges, which also did not happen. Several times Chantilly pass defenders got there early but no calls resulted from the other line judge.

Meh, haters gonna hate. Have fun blaming the refs again for the massive load of crap Centreville is going to dump on Westfield next week.

Westfield did score on the same drive for one of the TD call backs. So only one is an issue and there is no reason for Westfield not to have that dictate the outcome. Should have beating them by 4 touchdowns. I’m sure they will ready next week against Cville who looked liked crap even thou they trounced Oakton

Others have noticed the horrific officiating in this game. Seeing the game in person the inconsistency in calling penalties was staggeringly obvious. I think the head linesman was the same guy who overturned the Westfield interception in the Madison game - another ghastly mistake that greatly influenced the outcome in that game.

Also, the frustrated Westfield "fan" is just plain wrong - Westfield had no issues getting lined up and most of the penalties against them were ticky-tack that could be called on every play. Basically the refs "let Chantilly play" while nailing Westfield for every possible interpretable penalty.

Also to note is Westfield's starting QB and leading tackler on defense did not play.

Regading Coach Henderson, I did not know the circumstances. It did just seem odd to me that he left a program (Hayfield) where he was winning 9 or 10 games a year except for his last 2 years there. I am aware that every coachg in the county is on a one year contract, which is crazy and another story. I think he will leave WTW as soon as something better opens up, maybe even this off-season.

Also, I agree with the folks posting on here about NFHS, it is quite unfortunate. I'm not sure what they can do to improve the situation but I'm going to stay optimistic and hope they find a way to fix all the non-function cameras because NFHS is great and gives out of town people (like myself!) a chance to watch.

1. Fairfax (-10) @ Robinson
- Fairfax won 20-10, nailed this one although I thought they would be victorious by a wider margin.

2. Falls Church (-35) @ Lee
- Falls Church won and covered, 52-7.

3. Hayfield (-14) @ Mount Vernon
- Hayfield won 42-28, nailed this one as well! With this win, Hayfield has essentially locked up a playoff spot.

4. Lake Braddock (-50) @ Woodson
- Lake Braddock won and actually covered as well, winning 51-0. The Cavs have been outscored 303 to 13 in their last 5 games.

5. Langley @ Herndon (-7)
- Langley won 27-7. I didn't see this one coming, Langley is sneaky good. Herndon's winning streak comes to an end but they can focus in on their final game of the regular season and the playoffs. Langley is on track to host a playoff game as well.

6. Madison (-42) @ South Lakes
- Madison won 35-7, failing to cover.

7. McLean @ Washington-Lee (-24)
- Washington-Lee won and covered 48-13. The Generals are now 5-4 and fighting for their playoff lives.

8. Oakton @ Centreville (-40)
- Centreville blanked Oakton, 49-0.

9. Potomac Falls @ Stone Bridge (-28)
- Stone Bridge won 50-7, they were winning 36-0 after the 1st so I'm led to believe Mickey put the back ups and JV kids in for the second half.

10. South County (-28) @ T.C. Williams
- South County won and covered 32-0. The game was closer than the score indicates and it was 6-0 late in the 2nd before the Stallions scored 3 touchdowns in a span of about 10 minutes. (Not game minutes)

11. Stuart @ Annandale (-10)
- JEB won 38-21, I totally got this wrong. Annandale finishes the season at 3-7 and with it being their last game, I have to wonder if they gave up on the season or if some of their players were missing. Good win for JEB as they will probably beat Lee this week to finish their season.

12. Wakefield @ Marshall (-40)
- Marshall blanked Wakefield, 63-0. Wakefield finished 0-10 and they get my vote for worst team in the area this year. They finish their season at 0-10 and only scored 4 touchdowns in their last 8 games. The positive is their roster has a lot of sophomores and juniors that will be back next year, but they have a lot of improvement to do. The Warriors should be playing the Lees and Jeffersons of the world.

13. West Potomac @ West Springfield (-17)
- West Springfield won 35-28 in OT, West Potomac was winning for the majority of the game, by 2 possessions even at some point. As I said earlier this year, the Wolverines are one of the tougher teams to predict. Hats off to the Spartans for rallying back and prevailing.

14. Westfield (-21) @ Chantilly
- Chantilly won 14-7, I was very shocked by this but after reading some comments on both here and VA Preps, I learned that Westfield was without a few players and Chantilly had long drives. I didn't watch so I can't comment on the ref debate that's been going on but it is very interesting. I would love to see some film.

Re: High School Football 2022
Posted by: parentof2 - week 10 ()
Date: October 30, 2022 11:31AM

The final week of the regular season is here. As always, the season has completely flown by. I really like this weeks slate, tons of interesting match-ups, games that could tweak the playoff standings, some rivalry games, and just a lot of games that I think will be good.

Freedom has finished their regular season at 10-0, outscoring those 10 opponents 635 to 38. Thats absolutely insane, they are on track to beat the record for most points scored in a season which is held by one of those really good Hampton teams. They will probably meet Oscar Smith in the state semifinals at home and I think this is their year and they will win it all. We don’t really talk about them on here being a Fairfax Forum and all but I just wanted to state my opinion.

Anyway, on-to this week’s slate:

1. Centreville (-21) @ Westfield
- Centreville would’ve been the favorite if Westfield was healthy but with their QB’s health being up in the air as well as other players, I think Centreville wins with relative ease.

2. Edison @ Hayfield (-14)
- The Bird Bowl. The Hawks have won the last 19 in this series with their last in 1989. I don’t think a loss would disqualify either team from the playoffs. I expect the Hawks to make it 20 in a row at home.

3. Herndon (-7) @ Marshall
- I picked Herndon last week for the first time in lord knows how long. And unfortunately, they lost. I’m picking them again this week to win a bounce back game.

4. Lake Braddock @ South County (-5)
- Game of the week. I’m going to keep it short here, who gets it done? I can see either of these teams winning but I’m going with my gut and the Stallions. Looking forward to this one.

5. Langley (-24) @ McLean
- McLean bragging rights on the line here. Langley is simply the better team in McLean.

6. Madison (-15) @ Chantilly
- Co-Game of the week. Going to be interesting to see if Chantilly will do what they did against Westfield or switch up the game plan. Madison is a top two team in the Concorde and despite the Chargers big upset last week, they just aren’t very good in my mind and they have a bigger test coming at them this week.

7. Oakton @ South Lakes (-21)
- Disappointing season for the Seahawks but they have one last chance to blow the doors off someone and unfortunately for Oakton, that will be them. Seahawks win big.

8. Robinson (-10) @ West Potomac
- This is a really interesting game. Robinson will slow it down and run the ball a ton which will minimize the ability for the Wolverines to utilize their athletes. Look for the Rams to pull away in the 2nd half.

9. Stone Bridge (-20) @ Independence.
- Indy started off 6-0 and have since lost 3 in a row to Briar Woods, LoCo, and Woodgrove. Stone Bridge is the better team here and Mickey will have them prepared.

10. Stuart (-21) @ Lee
- JEB got their win last week and I think they will finish the season on a 2 game win streak. Lee needs to continue to play TJ and they need to schedule Wakefield next cycle.

11. West Springfield @ Fairfax (-14)
- Another very solid Patriot District game. Fairfax is looking to finish 10-0 and the Spartans come in at 9-1. Manny Baskerville is going to have to get time to make plays, Fairfax has a above average defensive line and Tony Rojas right behind them. Good test for both teams before the playoffs start.

12. Woodson @ T.C. Williams (-28)
- WTW can breathe a sigh of relief after this one because their season will be over. T.C. is fighting for their lives and even with a win this week, they may miss the playoffs.

13. Yorktown (-17) @ Washington-Lee
Game is on Saturday 11/5. Yorktown has won 5 in a row in this series and I think they make it 6 in a row.

Smith has faced an unusual amount of adversity this year but they will still give Freedom all they can handle! If Freedom doesn't beat the Tigers this year, they may never do it! With only 48 Varsity players, Overton could end up being the version of Coach Brown & Colonial Forge in Reg B! With Highland Springs moving up to Class 6 next year, I don't see them being any better than C. Forge ever was!

Hard to believe that we're at the final week of the season, though a couple of teams are in the clubhouse already. Here's a weekly review of how I did with my picks.

Correctly picked Fairfax to win and cover (as I noted last week, I count a cover as the favorite winning by the number of points in the spread, or more. I was more confident that Fairfax would win against Robo than I was against Lake Braddock, but I'm not surprised by the closer margin. Robo's strategy was to run the ball and milk the clock, which fits perfectly into their style of play. That explains the relatively close margin.

Correctly picked Falls Church to both win and cover. If you're a bad team playing Lee will cure what ails you.

Correctly picked Hayfield to win and cover. I think Mt. Vernon is eliminated from the playoffs.

No pick with the spread greater than 35 points. I'm still on track for my prediction that Woodson won't win another game this season. I mentioned that Woodson plays Lake Braddock tougher than other opponents. Comparing this score to the over 70 that Centreville, Robo, and Fairfax hung on Woodson, it is still the case that Woodson plays Lake Braddock tougher.

I took Herndon to win and cover, so I got both sides the pick wrong. Herndon is one of the two feel-good stories this year, and I let my emotions get the best of me. This means my other season prediction that Herdon wouldn't lose another game is no longer accurate.

Correctly picked South County to win and cover. Also thought that this loss would effectively eliminate TCW from the playoffs, but West Potomac's loss keeps TCW very much alive. Since there is no way that TCW is going to lose to Woodson, West Po will have to beat Robo to secure the playoffs. That's going to be tough.

Annandale was the favorite. I took them to win, but not cover. That means I got the winner wrong, but I was correct against the spread. Considering Annandale's challenges, I think 3-7 is a pretty good record for them.

I took West Springfield to win and cover, because I thought West Springfield was much better than West Potomac. I, too, was following the progress of this game online, and it looked like we were going to have a major upset here. Lucky For West Springfield, they pulled it out. I got the winner right, but wrong against the spread. West Potomac had to have choked big time. By choking, they are now in 8th place barely above the playoff line. Their loss means that it is almost certain that two National teams will make the playoffs, and West Potomac is going to have to beat Robinson to secure a playoff berth.

I took Westfield to win, but not cover. Wrong straight up, correct against the spread. Westfield is hard to figure out this year.

My picks for these games against these spreads:

Centreville wins and covers.

As much as I want to take Edison, as they are the second feel good story this season, I don't think they are as good as Hayfield. I think Hayfield wins, but I think Edison will keep it close, so I'll take Hayfield not to cover. Hayfield and Edison are sitting 6th and 7th in the current Region C standings, and I think both are locked into those positions. It may be possible for Edison to drop to 8th with a loss, but that depends on West Potomac winning, and how many bonus points they earn.

Langley is sneaky good. Marshall is not. I think Herndon recovers from their loss to Langley, and I'll take them to both win and cover. I think this is a fairly easy pick.

Respectfully, I might suggest that West Springfield @ Fairfax is the game of the week, since they are #1 and #2 currently in the Region C standings. But this will undoubtedly be a great game. My sense is that South County isn't quite the juggernaut they have been in years past, so I'm going to take Lake Braddock to win outright.
>

Agree with all of that. Langley wins and covers.

I don't think Chantilly will be able to pull on Madison what they pulled on Westfield. I'll take Madison to win and to cover.

South Lakes wins and covers.

I think this is exactly Robinson's game plan here. West Potomac really needs this game, and I think they are eliminated with a loss (unless Woodson shocks the world and beats TCW. Yeah, right). But I think Robo is better. Robo wins and covers.

With Stuart's win last week, I'm really surprised that the spread is this low. Stuart wins and covers.

Winner will be #1 seed in Region C, and loser probably drops to #2 (though, judging by the standings, #2 probabably draws Edison as their opponent). I think Fairfax is very much interested in getting an undefeated season, so I'll take them to win and cover. THis should be a great game, and I predict it will be high scoring. You don't give over/under lines, but I'm taking the over.

How long has it been since Woodson was less than a 35-point underdog? It's been a while. Because the spread is 28, I have to make a pick. TCW is fighting for their playoff life. Woodson is fighting to get to basketball season. TCW wins and covers.

This is a big, indeed YUGE rivalry, as the winner gets Arlington bragging rights. I think Yorktown is probably a bit better, but I think W-L has too much pride to let them win going away. I'll take Yorktown to win, but not cover.

Another 50-0 loss for the Cougars. We are about to be 2-8. We can’t run the ball. We can’t tackle. At what point does the Oakton AD say enough is enough and fire this entire staff? We need a new coach who can actually gameplan!!

What's up with Oakton's football helmet decals?

It's as if they quietly went from being Cougars to "the Football Team" for some reason.

I get they play like a youth football team, but they don't need to look like one too, no?

You and the others at Oakton should get the team back to using the Cougar decals; I personally think the 2015 Cougar logos would like great on Oakton's newer shiny helmets, but hey, I guess this isn't the most pressing issue over there.

If you are really a Cougar dad, you would know that they have battled with a large number of injuries throughout the team, all year long. The last few weeks a lot of JV players have had to play for varsity starters who have been in and out with injuries all year long. Unfortunately, they do not have the depth like the other Concord/Patriot teams do and it has created a lot of mismatched games this year. So, I don't think it's really a matter of game planning, you play with what you have and deal with it

They have a really good rising senior class with a really good freshman class upcoming, so overall, I think the program will be much better next year. I am not trying to make excuses, running, blocking and tackling are basic fundamentals that they need to get much better at next year.

Every team deals with injuries and JV guys playing on a Friday night. Next man up. That doesn’t cause teams to lose by 40+ week after week.

As a long time Oakton football parent, it pains me to see the struggles on the field - given the historic success of the program. Not making any excuses, but the current staff inherited a sh*tshow. They will come back and be competitive - it will just take time.

Big game in region B with undefeated battlefield and patriot playing. That region also has freedom all teams have a rating of 30 or higher. 4 teams in region A have a rating of 30 or higher smith has their work cut out for them to make it back to the state semi-final game. In region C there are also 4 teams with a 30+ rating. Then in region D only Madison has a 30+ rating. Since power points take into account strength of schedule seems like Region D is weak and 3 loss madison has a good rating becuase they have played one of the toughest schedules in the state and has thus far ran the table in the region. That being said it’s a crapshoot to say who’s going to play in the semi final game but I’ll go ahead and say it won’t be lake Braddock. Give me Westfield vs Fairfax. Fairfax is the hot team right now with the best player in the northern region. I think Westfield wins out becuase of coaching and better talent Simmons has only lost 1 playoff game in region in the last 6 seasons. Madison can’t keep winning close games against centreville and Westfield they are not the dynasty Westfield was from 15-20.

Problem with Oakton leaving the Concord is where would they go? They can’t beat anyone in Concord and only team they could beat in Patriot is Woodson. They’re putrid.

Stick Oakton with McLean and Marshall I guess.

Another lightweight team surrounded by heavyweights is Woodson. Stick them with Annandale and Justice. This kind of switch is the only way for either Oakton or Woodson to ever maybe taste semi consistent playoffs again (outside of the rare fluke season).

VHSL power ratings for the playoffs:

Things that stand out;; Smith will host throughout the playoffs. IF they lose to Phoebus on Saturday, they may give that spot up. However, if that happens, it will likely be to the winner of the Patriot vs Battlefield game. Expect the winner to surpass Freedom due to their poor strength of schedule. Even beating Stone Bridge didn't help them. AND it also sets them up for another major disappointing season afer beating up really bad teams in their district!! As the philosopher, Mike Tyson once said, "Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouff". Overton needs to schedule Highland Springs or some of the DMV Private Schools if they want to get to the consistent state contender he THINKS he wants to be!

Region C & D appear to be wide open this year. Fairfax appears to the class of these teams BUT without experience in late playoff runs, they'll be suspect to a major upset come regional finals and/or semi-state game!

Hmmm interesting Smith would host and not Freedom considering Smith doesn’t play a ten game regular season this year.

I can’t see Westfield winning out but I can see Lake Braddock choking and not making it to the Friday game. I like Fairfax or SoCo

VHSL power points are not calculated on the total acquired points. They are averaged by the number of games. AND even when the numbers are tied, the team with the fewer games wins the tiebreaker. I am only guessing, BUT, I suspect Freedom won't win the Region B Power points race anyway. The winner of the Patriot vs Battlefield game should pass by Freedom (Freedom's season is done & they won't accumulate enough power points to overcome the other teams due to how poor their opponents have been in 22). Playing a powder puff schedule and running up the score vs securing a tougher schedule shows just how far away he is to leading an annual state contender in Class 6. Everyone is tracking their path to possibly beating Hamptons total points in a season, BUT the bigger story MIGHT be that this team may not even win their Regional Finals!!!!

Smith has played King's Fork & Western Branch, beaten both & they definitely could be considered equivalents to Battlefield & Patriot teams. Their scores haven't been 49-0 shutouts this year but they could still win it all...If they beat Phoebus Saturday, they should be the team to beat. King's Fork and Phoebus are supposed to be better than they were in 2021 & Phoebus won their state title last year.. King's Fork narrowly lost to Varina in their State SemiFinal Game!

This is flat wrong - number of games played is not a tiebreaker - number of games played by your opponents is and even then it is the 3rd and 4th tiebreakers. The tie breakers are as follows:

(b) The winner of any games between the two tied teams if only the tied
teams are involved. If more than two teams tied, and one of the tied teams beat all other tied teams, that team shall advance.

(c) The team with the better record against all common opponents.

(d) A team that played an opponent with an effective nine (9) game schedule
(non-recognized opponent, i.e., home school or out-of-state non-public school, or inability to schedule/play a 10th game) shall be seeded ahead of a school whose opponents play 10 game schedules.

(e) Schools that played an opponent with nine-game schedules shall be
seeded ahead of opponents who played 10-game schedules.

(f) The team with the highest winning percentage against rating scale-
recognized opponents.

(g) The team with the higher average rating of all of each team's opponents.

(h) The team with the higher average rating of all of each team's VHSL
public and VHSL non-public school opponents.

(i) The regional chairman, or his/her alternate if his/her school is involved,
shall draw by lot to determine the playoff representative.

(j) The group chairman or vice chairman if the chairman's school is involved,
shall draw by lot to determine the playoff representative. Should both the group chair and vice chair be involved in the tie the group secretary would oversee the process.

Put the pipe down now! Stone Bridge will roll Independence. Indy schedules powder puffs out of conference then get worked over by decent teams. They will finish 6-4 and likely miss the playoffs because their schedule is so weak. Two real peaches at the helm for these two teams.

The Warhawks will win this game easily. Madison by 14 at the half, 24 at the end.

If SB makes it to the state final they will get absolutely trounced by Highland Springs

Yes of course, what is your point? Reading comprehension an issue for you? There is a difference between a team’s schedule and a its opponent’s schedule. Items d and e are about the opponent’s schedule.

They should rotate home field for the state semi final games every year. Throw out the power points or seed all four teams with the power points and 1 & 2 get home games. Just to mix things up.

Yes, I agree.

I thought it was really lame that South County rightfully played its way to the State Title game two seasons in a row (2019 & Spring 2021) but had to play away at other teams' fields for the state semi-final game.

i think the power point system works alright. Schedule tougher opponents & get rewarded for beating them by staying home through the playoffs. The only change I'd consider is cross bracketing after the Regional Finals. Send the weaker team on the road to play the top teams with the hopes that the best teams play for the championship!! The last 2 state title games were embarrassing. Massaponax & Battlefield vs Smith were far better games.

This year, the same issue could occur. Reg A & B champs will likely be the far better teams!

Sometimes you get what you get when it comes to scheduling better teams. Some schools don’t want to travel too far so they are fighting each other to strengthen the schedule. Stonebridge did it right. They loaded up with potential power points. But would like to see a change of some sort once regional finals and states begin

Yep. Westfield did not show for this game - the midseason momentum is gone. Completely dominated in front of the largest crowd in several years. The defensive line has been the weakest link all season - the last three games = embarrassing. If anyone is handicapping the playoffs Westfield QB reinjured his ankle - doubt he will play next week and even if he does he's not gonna be right. Still have a handful of starters out - don't think Herndon doesn't have an excellent shot at winning Friday.

As a result of last night's action, it appears that the Region C are set. West Springfield might get two additional points depending on the result of the W-L Yorktown game today, but it won't affect the standings.

Unofficially, next week's Region C matchups are

(8) Alexandria @ (1) Fairfax
(7) Edison @ (2) South County
(6) Hayfield @ (3) West Springfield
(5) Robinson @ (4) Lake Braddock

Don’t blame that game on injuries. They never had a chance. Had one good drive all night. The refs called as many penalties against Cville as they could and didn’t matter. Westfield got smacked…possibly a rematch in 2 weeks

(8) Alexandria @ (1) Fairfax
A lot of tougher game to pick then a usual 1/8 match up. AC can play with anyone, but you never know what AC team is going to show up. Fairfax could blow them out or win in a close game. Fairfax wins in a close game.

(7) Edison @ (2) South County
SoCo wins easily and gets ready for the next round

(6) Hayfield @ (3) West Springfield
WS wins easily, Hayfield is not on the same level

(5) Robinson @ (4) Lake Braddock
LB won the regular season match up, but I think Robinson wins this one in a close game. LB has more talent every year than any team in the region, I think they have 5 or 6 guys who will play at the next level this year, but Doc will find a way to choke. Any coaching staff can win 8-9 games a year when you have more talent than the other teams you are playing. A Good staff will win big games year in and year out!

Fuck! what is with you Westfield haters? I said they suck, they were embarrassing and ripe for a first round playoff loss. Somehow that gets interpreted into me claiming they are state championship contenders one sprained ankle from being 10-0. Thank god for football geniuses trolling this thread - otherwise I might think a 16-13 record over the last three seasons isn't championship football. On the bright side I see Oscar Smith took a beating - at least that fucking asshole troll has left the building.

goes to show you just how much better the previous 2 yrs teams were @ Smith...& before everyone writes them off, note that Phoebus lost last year to Smith by the same 49-0 score but still won their State Title... Not sayin Smith will win it this year but they are still Smith!

I almost forget they went to states in 2012, if my memory serves me right they weren’t as good that year as they had been a few years before that

Henderson did one thing well at Hayfield and it was recruiting. All his playmakers besides Cobbs lived in Oxon Hill
