Woodson's defense will be historically awful.

Oakton destroyed Herndon last night. This could be Oakton’s year. People better watch out!!

I don’t think crushing a team that has lost 26 games in a row should give you much optimism. Oakton may be better but you learned nothing by beating Herndon in a scrimmage.

Centreville 1’s looked good against Broad Run’s 1’s.

Don't sleep on Woodson, they will be one of the top teams in the region this year.
Woodson looked great against Edison and Marshall; the offense was unstoppable!
Patriot district teams will have a hard time stopping this offense!
The QB is ranked in the top 100 of his class. Look for them to put up a half a hundred on most teams

I hope they score A LOT on Lewis and Falls Church, because SoCo, Robo, Centreville, Braddock, etc. are going to be be blood baths.

Can we stop with trolls talking about how good Woodson, Herndon, Marshall, Edison, etc are going to be! We all know they’re gonna stink. The dumb jokes get old. If we’re going to talk about teams that were awful last year who I think LEGITIMATELY have a shot to be region contenders - it’s Oakton!! Great players and superior coaching delivers championships. They will show that this year! Watch out! Cougars going to bite ya in 2022!!

I went to two of those. I went to the Woodson v. Marshall scrimmage on Thursday, and the Chantilly v. Fairfax scrimmage on Friday.

I normally enjoy high school football, but the Woodson/Marshall scrimmage made me reconsider that. Woodson looked good on the first series, but after that, they couldn't do anything offensively, though I don't think it was good defense by Marshall as much as it was an inability of Woodson to execute. Marshall's offense was a bit better. Woodson's defense was awful.

The Chantilly/Fairfax scrimmage was the complete opposite. They played the scrimmage under more normal game like conditions. The quality of play for both teams was lightyears ahead of what I saw from Woodson/Marshall. Fairfax's quarterback started their first possession with a 40 yard bomb down the sideline. That happened again on a later possession. Chantilly's defense stiffened and held Fairfax to a field goa. Chantilly got a TD on their next possession. The teams traded possessions thereafter and the score (by my calculations since they weren't keeping it on the scoreboard was Fairfax 17, Chantilly 10 at the half. Unfortunately, I couldn't stay for the second half. One of Fairfax's touchdowns was a pick six. Chantilly's TD was set up by a Fairfax fumble deep in their own territory. I think Fairfax had the slightly better offense, but they were more mistake prone than Chantilly's offense -- the fumble, but more pre-snap penalties and holding calls.

All in all, it was a fun scrimmage, and I wish I could have stayed for the second half.

Nova fan- The first hour and a half of the Marshall/ Woodson scrimmage was actually Marshall vs Edison. The defense you saw getting worked was Edison. They even borrowed white Woodson jerseys apparently for the scrimmage since they didn’t have their own jerseys. Don’t ask me why. Edison was awful. Couldn’t do anything right, especially on D.

Saw Westfield vs Mt Vernon. Westfield's offense was able to get big chunks of yardage against the Mt Vernon defense (the Mt Vernon defense was small). First two series for each team were 10 plays and stop, then they went to a live game type scrimmage. Westfield scored twice in live play, one being set up when a defensive lineman snatched a pass out of the air at the Mt Vernon 17. Westfield probably would have had a third score but didn't due to the 10-play limit. Westfield's defense stuffed the Mt Vernon running game. Mt Vernon had a decent QB and one good WR who were quite successful in the passing game, accounting for the vast majority of the Mt Vernon offense. Mt Vernon used that QB-WR combo to put together one nice drive and probably should have scored, had the WR not been stripped at he Westfield 10 to kill the drive. Both teams took multiple FG attempts in a part of the scrimmage that was used for situational plays (punts and FGs). The Mt Vernon kicker looked good with FGs easily out to 40 yards. The Westfield kicker was not quite as sharp but still quite capable out to 35-40 yards.

I'm a broken record but Calpreps changed their algorithms after the 2016 season and their rankings have been complete and total garbage since then. Anyone who pays attention to Calpreps rankings is only doing so because they are about the only game in town.

Northern Virginia will always be at a disadvantage with regards to kids transferring into a program for public school football. With the highest rents nearest the better school's programs AND NO ONE wants to try & sell a $1M home to go play at a public school!

The only chance to get another top tier program is for a Catholic School Private team to build up a national power team.....BUT again, who wants to deal with the crazy commuter traffic to get to ANY School in the area? Plus the private schools aren't that much better than VA public schools.

DeMatha & Maryland private schools are different because there IS a big difference AND their travel times to attend those schools are better.

In tbe 757, most of the kids that transfer might add 10 min to their parent's commute & come from families that live in an apartment that probably rents @ $1,700/month for a 3 BR. Heck the public housing stuff is probably $800/mo! AND for those kids, it means an opportunity for free college for a kid who otherwise would never get that education!! Northern VA kids play for school status & just don't have the same motivations to put in the work required for that title! The days of Oakton type, smash mouth football fell away after that team lost in the 2008 semifinal game to..... When was the last time ANY team in area hit like they did?

Battlefield has the opportunity to build something because their just far enough out to get kids that can move into tbeir area. Similarly, Freedom has that potential. Their coach just sucks at building toughness into his teams, otherwise, they'd challenge Smith!!??

Sorry, Battlefield doesn’t get too many transfers and the ones they get aren’t transferring for athletics. Battlefield just gets the most out of the kids that they have. Very good veteran coaching staff.

Basically you have High School football and then Oscar Smith.

Good football teams usually have studs and average players with a couple positions that are below average. Oscar Smith has studs at every position. Not sure how it’s fun playing with kids that are not from your community. Freedom WB falls into the same category.

Not too many transfers? Translation is that their just a few more seasons from getting ENOUGH moves to reach that next level. Don't short change Battlefield. If their Coaches can show that next level dominance, the parents will seek a way to get their kids into that program.

Centreville is the clear favorite although nothing is certain. IMO, Madison, Westfield, Chantilly and South Lakes are a toss-up behind them with Oakton still lagging but building.

Everyone is giving Madison second place at worst but I wonder about that - I don't think it's an exaggeration to say they lost their top dozen players from last season - do they really have the depth and experience to stay at that level?

Madison opens up against Stonebridge. Who is expected to win that game? Stonebridge normally rolls, but Madison has been strong the last couple years.

I'm sure Stone Bridge had a strong recruiting class. They'll roll.

Hello all! High school football season is officially back. I hope everybody had a safe and prosperous 8 months while I was absent. I also want to say thank you to everybody that contributed to this forum in my absence. For anyone that is new, or for those that forgot, I post my spreads and results every Sunday morning. I encourage everybody who has any input (both positive and negative) to please chime in! All interactions are very much encouraged. I also use the old names of the schools that had their names changed (JEB, Lee, etc), I do not mean to offend anyone, I'm just calling them what I knew them as when my kids were in school. The good news is that this COVID stuff seems to be behind us. I don't think many games will be cancelled this year. I'd also recommend y'all keep a link for this forum on your phones or computers as it seems the spam bots are totally out of control.

I do spreads for all of the Fairfax County schools minus Thomas Jefferson because they play basically an independent schedule. Lee, Herndon, and a few others are just as bad as TJ and they play a district schedule. I think TJ should do the same. I do spreads for Stone Bridge because they were in the old Liberty District when my kids were in school so I'm pretty familiar with them and their ways. I also noticed that less and less kids are coming out to play football every year, it's a shame. But enough of my rambling, let's get into it!

1. Annandale @ T.C. Williams (-20)
- The Titans are far more athletic, and that alone should be enough to get past the Atoms comfortably.

2. Centreville (-40) @ Herndon
- The Hornets come into this game on a 26 game losing streak with their last win coming on 10/26/2018 against Langley. It won't end this week. Centreville has one of the best backs in NOVA. Look for a running clock in the 2nd half.

3. Edison @ Stuart (-7)
- Stuart won this match-up last year by 2 touchdowns on the road. I have no reason to think that it won't be any different this year.

4. Fairfax (-7) @ Wakefield
- I feel I could've made the spread on this one a little higher but Fairfax only beat Wakefield by 5 last year. The Rebels will be led by Tony Rojas, but I'm not quite sure who else they have. They should be just fine against Wakefield.

5. Lake Braddock (-24) @ Hayfield
- Saw a post on here that stated LB is ranked #8 in the pre-season state rankings, so I checked VA Preps to confirm and it is indeed true. Congrats to Qb Daniel Lipovski on his commitment to Delaware. I recall not to long ago LB was sending kids to the Ohio States of the world. That is in no way a shot at Lipovski, I just find it interesting. Hayfield on the other end will get smoked in their first 2 games and have a good chance to run the table afterwards. LB wins big.

6. Marshall (-6) @ Washington-Lee
- I can see this game going either way. My gut is telling me Marshall though, Elijah Hughes is going to have to be a menace for WL on the line all year. IF WL was smart, they'd put in in the backfield as a FB and have him pound it in the end zone in short yardage situations.

7. McLean @ West Potomac (-28)
- The Wolverines will be too much for the Highlanders to handle. Too much speed and athletes and they also have some big kids on the line.

8. Oakton (-24) @ Lee
- Oakton seems to be getting better, going 4-6 last year. Lee on the other hand, seems to decline every year. I checked their roster online and they do not have very many kids on their team. Going to be a long year for the Lancers. Maybe they should pull a TJ and schedule home school cupcake teams.

9. South Lakes @ Robinson (-17)
- Robinson won this game last year by 40 points which really surprised me. I don't know much about this years Seahawk team. Looks like LoPresti will start at QB for the Rams. Setting the over/under at 3 passing attempts per game. Robinson found what works for them, running the ball down everyone's throat. They are a team I will have my eye on this year.

10. Stone Bridge (-17) @ Madison
- Game of the week. Two time defending Class 5 state champs vs. the Class 6 runner-up. Since I don't know much about either team in terms of who is returning, who graduated, or in SB's case, who Mickey got to transfer in so this game will tell me a lot about both programs.

11. West Springfield (-3) @ Mount Vernon
- Co-Game of the week. I really like this match-up. The Spartans won this one by 10 last year and they return their QB and WR1, but Fritts is a good coach, This should be a good one for sure,

12. Westfield (-3) @ Stonewall Jackson
- Not quite sure what we will see from the Bulldogs this year. They have a fabulous coaching staff and I think they will make the most of what they have. The question is, are they going to be able to compete with the Centrevilles and Madisons of the district.

13. Woodbridge @ South County (-20)
- SoCo should roll in this one. They lost a good amount of talent to graduation but I'm sure they will be a regional contender again this year.

14. Yorktown (-21) @ Langley
- Hansen & co should have no problem with Langley. The Patriots also bring back their QB. They very well might be a sleeper team.

You make good points but everything is cyclical and nothing lasts forever. Let's take a look at the last 21 years of Class 6 attached. Oscar Smith is in a roll for sure.

intersting that the 757 area is slways noted as the Beach... BUT 703 Gets split up between Fairfax & Prince William Co...... there are Definitely 3 distinct areas in the 757 area. The Beach area, Suffolk/Chesapeake & the Hampton/Newport News area..

In fact after this season Landstowne will be the only Class 6 team in VaBeach. No teams from Hampton/Newport News either. Smith, Western Branch & Grassfield will be included as the only Class 6 teams from the 757 area.

Bottom line, it's a 20 to 30 mile drive to tbe BEACH from 90% of those other 757 schools!!

I am just utilizing the common parlance even though not technically correct, but you raise a good point and I'm not really sure where all of the 757 schools are physically located.

I separated out PWCPS and FCPS since there is a bit of a rivalry between the counties. Just within Fairfax County - driving from South County HS to Herndon HS is about 30 miles. Didn't try to separate out Alexandria City and Arlington County (not that it was needed). Technically Osbourn is in Manassas City not Prince William County. But who knows that?

Thanks for doing the spreads and commentary. Didn't mean to hijack your post - I hadn't hit refresh so didn't see your post until later in the day. Hopefully others will find this thread and share their knowledge and comments. Such as is out there.

LB sent one player to Ohio State (AJ Alexander) and he was a mediocre role player who transferred to Gardner-Webb because he wasn't Big Ten material. There was also a kicker, Tyler Durbin, who played soccer at JMU before grad transferring to OSU as their kicker for the 2016 season--when he was so bad he went down as arguably the worst kicker in Ohio State history, missing critical FGs in their biggest games of the season against Michigan and Clemson. I'd rather see LB kids go to places like Delaware (or Fordham, like Nebrich) than ride the bench the way the way every single kid they've sent to a Power 5 program (except the kicker Weiler) has done.

Welcome Back! Good to see you back posting spreads. Like last year, I'll try my hand at picking against your spreads.

TCW wins and covers. I don't know much about TCW, but I've been hearing that Annandale is really bad this year.

I agree on the running clock. My policy is not to make a pick where the spread is 35 points or greater. Too much can happen that has nothing to do with the quality of both teams (for example, Centreville could decide to play all their sophomores in the second half, and that will hold down the margin of victory, making the game closer than it should be given the disparity between the two teams.

I like Stuart here to win and cover.

I saw Fairfax scrimmage against Chantilly, and they looked really good. Their only knock was too many stupid unforced penalties. I wouldn't be overly influenced by the close result against Wakefield last year -- Fairfax improved dramatically as the season progressed. I think the line here isn't big enough. Fairfax wins and covers.

I hate myself for saying this, but Lake Braddock wins and covers.

This one is a toss up, but I'll take Marshall to win and cover.

I think this is too much of a spread. I'll take Stone Bridge to win, but not to cover.

I agree. Langley is a mere shadow of what they were five or six years ago. Yorktown wins and covers.

The surprise will be IF SoCo & Madison aren't tied at #2 & Smith is #1...If not this scenario, then one of those teams would be left out of the Top TEN??!!

Hughes for W&L looked like a monster and they were able to run the ball pretty well. GCM had some untimely fumbles and W&L picked off a pass off a tip at the goal line. Game was definitely a bit closer than the score suggests as W&L running back scored a 60 yard TD in the last minute. W&L was pretty clearly the better team though.

Stone bridge wins on a 40yd field goal after a recovered onside kick. Final 17-16. Both teams are very good and by the looks of it will be playing in the state championship again. Madison looked more sloppy with penalties and special teams looks to have more room to improve than stone bridge. Great game played by the two best teams in northern va. Game of the year.

Oh we're playing this game through to it's end!! I predict the following disappointing season for Bulldogs: 4-6 Season with plenty of close wins that could easily turn into losses & the below losses, to me shouldn't be that close. Both Marshall, Yorktown & Oakton are all definitely possible losses.. So, 1-9 season is not unreasonable to consider!! Let's ALL bask in Westfield's less than mediocre season.!

8/26 Unity Reid LOSS 25-14
9/1 Washington Win 21-14
9/9 Marshall win 21-17
9/16 South County loss 31-6
9/23 Yorktown win 21-19
BYE
10/7 South Lakes loss 24-17
10/14 Oakton. win 26-19
10/21 James Madison loss 42-0
10/28 Chantilly loss 22-19

Westfields well of D1 talent has run dry and their best days are wayyyy behind them. It doesn’t matter how many former head coach’s you have on the sideline, if you don’t have the Jimmy's & Joe’s to execute the plays you're in for a long season. Be lucky to be 5-5.

Quite true. If anything it pretty much proves the claim that Simmons didn't/doesn't recruit. They just had an incredible run. Westfield has 10 grads playing D1 football this fall. Just don't have any at the school now.

1. Annandale @ T.C. Williams (-20)
- T.C. absolutely steamrolled the Atoms, 67-7. Going to be a long year for Annandale.

2. Centreville (-40) @ Herndon
- Centreville won 41-7, giving up a late score and failing to cover. 27 straight losses for Herndon...

3. Edison @ Stuart (-7)
- Edison edged out a late win, 20-14.

4. Fairfax (-7) @ Wakefield
- Fairfax won 52-14, they will be a team to keep an eye on come district play.

5. Lake Braddock (-24) @ Hayfield
- Lake Braddock won 57-10, they scored 3 touchdowns on their first 4 plays. I thought Hayfield would be improved in Aziz's 2nd year, but I guess I was wrong.

6. Marshall (-6) @ Washington-Lee
- Totally got this one wrong. W&L won 27-7.

7. McLean @ West Potomac (-28)
- West Potomac won and covered, 47-13.

8. Oakton (-24) @ Lee
- Oakton blanked Lee 39-0.

9. South Lakes @ Robinson (-17)
- Robinson won 35-28. Robinson was up at one point 21-0 and SL fought back, kudos for that.

10. Stone Bridge (-17) @ Madison
- This was indeed the game of the week, with SB winning on a last second field goal, 17-16. SB's WR1 (I believe Zeke Winbush) had an insane TD catch in which he dragged 2 or 3 Warhawks into the endzone. And then the NFHS site completely stopped working for all games, so I missed the 2nd half. Anyone else have this problem?

11. West Springfield (-3) @ Mount Vernon
- West Springfield won 49-24, they are a sleeper team this year.

12. Westfield (-3) @ Stonewall Jackson
- Stonewall won 25-14, this one really shocked me. Westfield might go 5-5 this year. It won't be the first time they've had a mediocre season and then bounced back.

13. Woodbridge @ South County (-20)
- SoCo 34-13, I nailed this one!

14. Yorktown (-21) @ Langley
- Langley pulled off the upset, 34-28. Is Yorktown that bad or is Langley good this year? I'm thinking Yorktown overlooked Langley.

--- Falls Church also beat George Mason 35-0, forgot that game in my spreads last week.

Rough first week for me, a couple of upsets that I did not see coming. I try to get better and better every week. SN: The games this week are going to be played on Thursday night.

1. Annandale @ Robinson (-42)
- This one is going to get ugly for Annandale. Running clock is very much possible before halftime.

2. Centreville @ Stone Bridge (-7)
- Game of the week. While SB looked rusty against Madison, I think Mickey will have them prepared for the Wildcats.

3. Falls Church @ Chantilly (-20)
- Interested to see how the Chargers look in their season opener.

4. Edison @ West Springfield (-24)
- Edison surprised me with their win last week but WS is no JEB. I can see Edison potentially covering if they keep the turnovers down and play solid football.

5. Fairfax (-24) @ Langley
- This game is on Friday night. We will see if Langley is legit or if the Yorktown win was a fluke.

6. Hayfield @ South County (-38)
- Hayfield’s last win against SoCo came in 2012. This one has potential to get real ugly as well.

7. Madison (-3) @ Lake Braddock
- Co-Game of the week. I don’t think Madison lost much of a step despite all of the guys they lost to graduation. I’m going with Madison here because they are more battle tested having played Stone Bridge while Braddock beat up on Hayfield. Should be a great game.

8. McLean @ Marshall (-7)
- Toss up here, my gut tells me Marshall. I think the Statesmen are a little bit better than the Highlanders.

9. South Lakes @ T.C. Williams (-14)
- I like T.C. at home in this one, but you can make an argument for South Lakes for sure. Another interesting match up.

10. Stuart @ Mount Vernon (-10)
- A Stuart team that just lost to Edison gets a pissed off Mount Vernon team…

11. Washington-Lee @ Westfield (-7)
- Not sure what to make out of Westfield quite yet. I just can’t see them losing to the Generals, but nothing surprises me.

12. Woodrow Wilson (DC) @ Yorktown (-9)
- Don’t know much about Wilson so I’m rolling with the Patriots to right their wrongs from last week.

13. Woodson (-7) @ Oakton
- Toss up game here. Woodson has film on Oakton but Oakton does not as it is WTW’s season opener. I also think Woodson has the better coaching staff so I’m going with the Cavs.

14. West Potomac (-28) @ Wakefield
Look for the Wolverines to roll.

Review of how I did with my picks:

Correctly picked TCW to win and cover. This spread should have been much higher, and possibly >35 points, which would have precluded a pick from me. TCW was an unknown quantity, but Annandale is really bad. It's going to be a long season for them.
>
> 2. Centreville (-40) @ Herndon
> - Centreville won 41-7, giving up a late score and

Took a pass on this due to the >35 point spread, and that late garbage time TD is why I do that with spreads this large.
>
> 3. Edison @ Stuart (-7)
> - Edison edged out a late win, 20-14.

Took Stuart to win and cover. Blew it on both counts.
>
> 4. Fairfax (-7) @ Wakefield
> - Fairfax won 52-14, they will be a team to keep

Correctly picked Fairfax to win and cover. I think the low spread reflects last year's game, but Fairfax is a different team from the one that started the 2021 campaign.

Correctly picked LB to win and cover.

You're not the only one. I thought Marshall would win this one.

Correctly picked West Po to win and to cover.
>
> 8. Oakton (-24) @ Lee

Correctly picked Oakton to win and to cover. I wonder if Lee will score any points this season?
>

Split decision here. COrrectly picked Robo to win, but I also picked them to cover, which I got wrong.

Correctly picked Stone Bridge to win, but not to cover. Correct on both counts. And I also had issues with NHFS.
>

Correctly picked West Springfield to win and to cover.

Picked Westfield to win and to cover. Completely blew it on both counts. I picked Westfield on past reputation, but I need to think more carefully about Westfield games.
>
> 13. Woodbridge @ South County (-20)

Correctly picked SoCo to win and to cover. They covered with only one point to spare. Great job on picking the spread.

I really blew this one, as I took Yorktown to win and to cover. I don't know what to make of this, but maybe Langley isn't as bad as I thought they were.
>

Considering that this is Falls Church and Mason, no one is going to be too upset that you forgot to include this one. FWIW, I would have picked Falls Church to win, but that shouldn't be surprising because Mason isn't that big of a school.

My picks against these spreads:

Running clock is only a second half thing, but look for it to start at the beginning of the third quarter. Given the spread, no pick from my, though my comment suggests what I think will happen here.
>
> 2. Centreville @ Stone Bridge (-7)

Stone Bridge wins, doesn't cover.
>
> 3. Falls Church @ Chantilly (-20)

Chantilly wins and covers. This spread may not be big enough.
>
> 4. Edison @ West Springfield (-24)

West Springfield wins and covers.

Langley's upset of Yorktown is giving me pause. As for Fairfax, while they have lots of talent, I understand that they are prone to lots of stupid penalties. I think Fairfax is the better team, so I'll still take them to win, but I'm going to say this will be closer than it should be and that Fairfax will not cover this spread.
>
> 6. Hayfield @ South County (-38)

Greater than 35 point spread. No pick from me.

Picking Lake Braddock makes me physically ill, but they look legit this year. I think they win this outright.
>

Look for Marshall to bounce back. I'll take them to win and to cover.

South Lakes' performance against Robo has me thinking they are better than most think. I think TCW will win, but they won't cover.
>

Mt. Vernon wins and covers.
>

W-L's upset win coupled with Westfield's loss makes this game very intersting, more than anyone would have thought a few years ago. I still can't believe that Westfield is bad enough to lose to an Arlington team, though. I'll take Westfield to win and cover. Thank you for not making the spread higher though.
>
> 12. Woodrow Wilson (DC) @ Yorktown (-9)

Coin flip. I'll take Yorktown to win and to cover.

Wasn't Woodson 2-8 last year, and the ONLY Patriot team NOT to make the playoffs? I'll believe Woodson is good when I see it. I haven't seen it yet, and don't expect to see it this week, either. Oakton wins outright.
>

West Po wins and covers.

Don’t sleep on West Potomac. Beat soco fairfax and Braddock last year making it to the rational ship. Returned a bunch of guys and new transfer QB is GOOD.

Your new transfer QB still lives in another schools boundaries.
