Yes, I believe curry will be staying if you're referring to Sean Curry the headcoach. From what I have heard this was the year to win states or not for the next two years due to most the the varsity being the seniors. They also had a kid Aiden Gobira, a 4 star Notre Dame commit that they could've used to their advantage.

Please face reality. Chantilly needs to worry about being consistently relevant in the Concorde before they think they are going to make a run at the state level. And one very good player (Gobaira) is not enough to push a team to that level either. Might get you another win or two against middling opponents but that is about it.

Eric Henderson at WTW is a good fit. He knows the district well and will bring in some kids I’m sure. Question is will they ever get back to what they were in ‘18?

I think it will take atleast 3 years, but yes henderson should be able to turn that program around. Too much talent in the area and kids at that school for them to be bad.

Patriot District:

SoCo has a lot of returning athletes, the QB will have a year's experience so I think they will still be the front runner.

Robinson is Robinson they will run the wing T until you can stop it. Most teams couldn't stop it last year. The QB play was awful, I believe both QBs return again this year. If they don't get better, they will be 1 and done in the playoffs again

West Potomac they are the team t watch, they were as good as anyone at the end of season. Not sure what they have returning, but they always have athletes, so they will be very competitive.

LB they return a lot of starting skills including the starting QB who was All Region, they don't seem to play a lot of defense at Braddock, that and Docs track record of not winning any big games will hold them back.

Alexandria City always has athletes not sure what they return, but they will beat some quality teams

Fairfax made a nice run last season; they too return a lot of skills including the RB/DB who was a stud. Taylor has done a great job rebuilding this program. Look for Fairfax to be in the thick of things this coming season

WS They return the starting QB who was pretty athletic and did a great job of filling in for the starter. They run the right system for the players they have and will make some noise.

Woodson New HFC, but still not a lot of talent. The returning QB is very small not very athletic and struggles to make throws over 15-18 yards. The do have a stud RB and Receiver. Henderson will have his hands full trying to rebuild this program, not having the athletes he is used to. If they are going to win this year, they will need new players and staff to come in to excel the process

I want to bump my post from the thread last year because I think the message is really important. For whatever coaches lurk this website, please take a look. This is how Fairfax needs to operate to beat 757 teams!

@MD4XD

Recruiting is terrible and should probably be dealt with legally somehow. However, some programs do a terrible job at the right type of recruiting, that being driving turnout from their own school. IDK if this is the job of the VHSL, VDOE, individual counties, or whoever, but there needs to be support programs in place to drive turnout from kids at their own school. Why do we think turnout is down across the state? Why do so many people say the talent level has decreased? Why does RE Lee HS (lewis) only have 25 some kids in their program in a school of over 2,000? Its not like kids have to even pick up a football prior to highschool to be able to play like other sports (baseball, typically). Highschool football programs needs to have serious school pyramid outreach to drive interest. Kids need to get into the weightroom prior to HS and then during all of HS. Theres a lack of interest? Coaches, get to your feeder middle schools and DRIVE that interest. Thats how the level of talent in FFX is going to improve.

Additionally, building a program means community outreach, volunteering, and fundraising. This can be done through fooddrives, leaf raking, selling christmas trees, etc etc. The more the team means to the community, the more people will come to games, buy tix, food, donate etc. Feedback loop that improves the program. This is what madison does and part of why their community supports them so much.

outreach to middleschools means going to them on field day, having an assembly, or whatever, and selling them the idea of playing football. Have your players go there and meet kids. It means having a pyramid game where all the kids from the HS pyramid middle and elementary schools get in free. Give them a shirt or whatever too. Let them go on the field after and meet players. It means having a summer camp for these kids to learn some football, it means an afterschool program in middle school to prepare them (basic lifting, sprinting, flag football). This is why Texas HS football is so good.

Like every high school that recruits has figured out..... its about jimmy's and joe's, not X's and O's.... so develop your jimmy's and joe's, and get more of them !

lmk what you all think, thanks

end

Henderson will find a QB to run his offense. Didn't he have 2 different Braddock guys transfer to Hayfield and play QB at Hayfield

@jimmy joe

Yes, one LB QB was supposed to go to Annandale, then figured a way to go to Lake Braddock, lost the job to Billy Edwards, then got recruited by Henderson and moved in district to Hayfield. Then transferred from JMU to GMU to play for Henderson again. Ironically I think he would have been a better QB for LB than Billy, but that program is all political so it wen to Billy.

The Man is right...

Community support... Madison athletics (all the sports) and to various degrees Marshall athletics have fundraisers at local restaurants in Vienna. The championship game was live-streamed at least three restaurants/bars in Town. Madison had a large crowd that made the three hour trip down to Norfolk for the game. For however much drivers are annoyed the Town shuts down part of Maple Ave for the homecoming parade. WDVM showed the team buses leaving campus with parents and students cheering them and a police escort. Also, many of the coaches live in boundary, some went to school there and/or and have had their kids at Madison. Madison Boosters funds all sports but a big chunk is football, plus there have been substantial private contributions from local businesses. Just using Madison as an example, nonetheless any school that is really engaged in the community can get that kind of support in return.

Youth sports and promoting thru middle and elementary school... since only a few ES and MS feed Madison HS plus the VYI youth sports and house leagues, all these kids have played multiples sports together for years. You can't create that kind of camaraderie and team leadership if you just start playing together freshman year. Watch the post game press conference with the Madison coach and team captains... the reporters were incredulous that these kids had played sports together since elementary school.

...is Madison HS perfect, no school is, but they do many things right.

Time for those Madison boys to up their juice intake. 5 to 10cc’s of tess. Get it boys, more falling short. Stack and cycle right. We’ve been doing this for 40yrs now, listen to all the juice heads that came before you. Your parents give you plenty of allowance, you have the means & know how. Get it done!

HM- Jeb and West Springfield.
5. Tuscarora
4. Stonebridge
3. Lake Braddock
2. Robinson
1. Madison WarCucks

Notice the trend, average athletic, upper middle class white kids who’s parents give them plenty of allowance and sends their kids to “personal” trainers who then hook them up with Coach Tess and then bam, 25-30lbs from Soph to JR year.

I heard from an old-timer that roughly 30 years ago Annandale High School won the football state championships multiple years in a row. They won the first state Lacrosse championship also. It appears that the bigger and more sports oriented schools are now in western Fairfax County and further out. The more academically oriented schools like McLean or Marshall are closer in to the city. I wonder when exactly the transition happened.

There are two major factors at play here. First, there was a boom in the number of new schools starting around 20-25 years ago as the western suburbs exploded with growth. As the newer schools opened further out they attracted the younger families (re: housing costs) whose kids tended to play sports. Second, and more importantly, the NOVA area has diversified tremendously in the 20 years I have been here, and the diversification is greater the closer you get to DC (although that is currently changing as it also expands outward). Those kids do not grow up playing the standard American sports, are somewhat more inclined to value academics over athletics. and tend to be (in many cases) not as affluent as the families who moved further out.

I think the team to beat this year has to be Lake Braddock.
They return a QB who was 1st team all-region with Doc and the best staff in the state!

I think everyone would agree that the job that Doc has done over the past 4-5 year rebuilding a program that was in shambles, has simple been nothing short of amazing! His teams have qualified for the playoffs each of the past 5 years.

If you want to play college football, then Lake Braddock is the place to be. Doc has more players go on to the next level than most of the other teams combined.

Looking forward to another great season for the Bruins!

High School Football is very similar to the board version of this game I saw on Owl Ratings. It's a great pastime that ends up either winning or losing. It is fun to play with friends or family. I think it makes a difference because in high school soccer everything has to be coordinated and strategic as well, you know?

My thoughts are SOCO wasn't the same after Charlie and kids off 2021 left.Brock did the most he could with a lack luster QB. So many missed targets and interceptions the fact the coaches never made the call to switch QB just was nuts.
As for WS they need to get a whole new staff their coaches are terrible. They also need to work on the teams moral once they start losing.
Robinson...well lets just say they will be back.
West Potomac needs to return to their previous district them and TC.
Lake Braddock will return especially if the other parts of this thread are correct?? Juicing?? Im not shocked they play hard and little dirty Like Madison.
Justice from what Ive seen recently decided to clear house and get a new staff so hey any of you guys ready to stop talking and help those boys out. They deserve one win right?

Maybe the best team Lake Braddock has ever had in school history! As most of you know they will have at least 6-7 scholarship players on this year's team. Doc knows how to coach them up to get to the next level

They will easily win the region, I am not sure any team will be competitive with them. Way to many good players and the best staff in the state, equals State Championship!

CVHS returning their most important piece, QB who can sling it and run. Scary part he is only a rising JR, will be a 3 year starter and smash all passing records at CVHS. We will be playing in December, bet on it!

Any team gonna have a chance vs Battlefield, Freedom, or Smith? Seems like a year where any team might have chance with some powerhouses rebuilding this fall.

WAY too early CalPreps.com VA HS Class 6 Rankings. It's all guess until we get more info but here it IS:

1. Oscar Smith
2. J. Madison
3. Battlefield
4. Freedom W
5. W. Branch
6. Manchester
7. S. County
8. Robinson
9. Patriot

Notes from this list...
What happened to the Beach District? looks like they could the worst? Smith has no competition until the State Semi game again BUT Region B might the toughest to get past for their attempt at a 3Peat.

Will Madison make it back for another shot @ Smith?

Centreville might be the sleeper?

Battlefield might be the favorite with probably the best talent returning?

Is Westfield really worse than Franklin County?

Are even any other teams worth discussing?

- Either them or CVille.

Centreville might be the sleeper?
- They will be solid.

Battlefield might be the favorite with probably the best talent returning?
- Couple other teams I wouldn’t count out. (F-WB, SOCO, etc)

Is Westfield really worse than Franklin County?
- Hell no

Are even any other teams worth discussing?
- Yes, not until the season starts though

Since CalPreps can only use an algorithm, this looks an awful lot like last year's final list. Although it well may happen that this list looks similar come October, I doubt it will look like this.

Why do these pansy kids in Northern Virginia think they are actually good at football??
When was the last time there was even a whole met player in Northern Virginia?
Northern Virginia Prince William county are all soft any Maryland decent team average team would spank them

No Northern VA team will schedule a game with Maryland teams.. That way, they won't get exposed.. Hell I don't think they schedule any teams outside the Class 6 Reg C & D.. Occasionally, a team will play StoneBridge but they have no chance vs the Bulldogs!! Even Westfield back in the day they 3peat were getting spanked by them.

This year won't be any different.

Centreville does not have D1 talent. They have 1 kid on their team with 1 offer.

Stop talking about a 5'8 QB with a small arm. You're making the entire program look like retards.

Coach Simmons is 3-1 versus Coach Thompson. Not many coaches can say that.

9-25-2015 Westfield 28 – Stone Bridge 7

Could've swore SB won in 2014, but checked Maxpreps & you're right.

Lot of people forget the talent on those WF rosters. Not just a bunch of boy scouts like they'd have you believe

Now CalPreps ranks them lower than Franklin County.. That's rough for Bulldog fans.

Warcucks is right! They were lucky to be in the State game vs Smith. Even luckier that the Tigers best player, Covil was injured in the 1st quarter else they'd had 60+ points dropped on them like SoCo got last Spring! (Spring Football, that was fun).

This Fall should be more interesting with no clear powerhouse in NorthernVA & Region B teams closing the gap some vs Smith

Centreville brings back the best QB-RB duos in the state, 1A-6A! We need a couple of our WR’s to step up and we will squash EVERYBODY!

West Sprinfield, West Potomac & Robinson may have all had a better chance vs Madison in playofffs last year than SoCo did. What are those teams lookings like for the Fall?

Will Gainseville come from nowhere as a new school that may have taken away good players from their neighboring schools?

Anything is possible but Battlefield was probably better than Madison last year & with their returning talent, I'd say they might be the favorite in Class 6.

What happened to Westfield? I don’t recall seeing a bigger fall from grace in recent memory. My oldest played them years back and they were quite formidable, fast forward to my youngest son that will play them next 2 yrs and they can’t wait to continue the recent dominance they have over them (Warhawks). They are slow at skill positions and secondary and the line play on both sides are nothing like teams of the past, weak and super soft. Simmons lost it?

The biggest test for Madison is one that South County had to learn the hard way.. After beating a VERY young Smith team, barely & questionable with a senior laden team, they assumed more titles were inevitable. Their next game vs Smith was disastrous to say the least.

So, with a bunch of seniors gone, will the Warhawks do the extra work to make it back to the top?

22 will be that of mediocrity with the possibility of even Westfield, LB, Robinson getting the title.. I bet Overton wishes his Freedom W. team was back in this region.. His Eagles have severely underperformed in 6B to say the least!

In a word-demographics. The school's demographics have changed significantly in the past decade or so. Westfield was able to overcome that change up to 2019 when they had several outstanding players who went on to play P5 football (Kim, Morin, Asante, Cockrill) along with a slew of others who played college ball that kept them in the hunt every year. But now the demographics has put them in a hole. Overall size and skill (e.g., playing football from a young age) as well as interest in football has all dropped off.

I know some won't agree with that, but that is why the sustained success has changed. If you look carefully at some of the other old time, usual powerhouses vs those who are good more recently (and I am not defining "powerhouse" as a school that is strong for just several years, but consistently) you will find other examples.

Look at Madison. Vienna is tough area to get kids to play football because of the majority of affluent people that live there but they somehow do.They have managed to resurrect their program past 8yrs before that they were 4-5 win team. Coach Lenny started it, and Counts has improved upon it. They got the kids in that building to come play and it all starts with the success of their youth program.

Strange, no direct links or articles about this? Gotta call BS until more comes up..

The only thing that seems relevant on this thread is how Northern Virginia HS football has fallen so far so fast.. It looks like Battlefield vs Smith in 22 and a much weakened Madison, SoCo, Centrefield & Robo battle for which team gets trounced again come December.

It's too bad too, Smith has lost some major talent. If there was a time to prevent a 3 peat, it's now.
Hopefully Battlefield won't be the next Colonial Forge team who couldn't get past them? Never underestimate Smith's ability to get some key transfers to maintain their dominance.

How is one team that's ranked about 150 Nationally also #1 in the State and STILL nearly twice as good as their nearest opponent? Northern VA football is just terrible!! BUT the rest of the state is worse with the exception of a single team!!??

A team with a ranking in the 20's shouldn't be considered a Football school.. Their pep clubs should find something else to do on Friday Nights!!

See... that is where your assumption is wrong, at least with Madison; it is school with very strong varsity athletics program that happens to have really good football teams (more recently). In the seven years my daughters have been there, they have won 14 state championships (3 boys, 11 girls)...and toss in 3 state championships for marching band.

Are they a "football school" probably not by your definition... and you can say it about the others schools "in the 20s" too. Football isn't the sole thing that matters in varsity sports if the school administrations are actually honest about engaging all the students, student athletes and their parents.

Yep VA HS is not good... And as you put it, there are other things to do.. Send the Pep Team Clubs off to do that other stuff.. What a waist of time & effort at the football games.. Sure it's a social thing to do but just go to show & meet up then head off to the parties..

What is even a "Pep Team Club" anyways? No one uses that term... like anywhere...

If you don’t think VA HS FB is “Good” then don’t pay attention to it.

What a waste of money, time and effort.. Freshman & JV teams built to support programs that should probably be playing @ 4 pm on a Thursday afternoon so they wouldn't have to turn on the lights for a night game!

Maybe I'm missing something. Are kids just transferring to play for Private Schools in DC or IMG or something?

Transferring in HS is more common in basketball than football, unless you’re next level

I don't know. Chad Riccardo despite being from the 757 felt Smith had to cheat to beat Madison. So, there's some hope. Maybe next game, he'll convince the refs to look the other way to help the Warhawks? It wouldn't help but at least Chad would feel better.
