Northern Region High School Hoops Thread 2021-22
Posted by: NR Insider ()
Date: November 28, 2021 07:38PM

The high school basketball season kicks off tomorrow. Local basketball gets plenty of coverage by sites like novahoops.com so this thread is just meant to discuss whatever you want with hoops. On this thread, discuss whatever basketball you like. I will start off by what upset me in an article, and it actually takes us to Loudoun.

Independence HS got 5 transfers this school year and I hate the recruiting in public schools. I googled to learn more about the coach and found a very disparaging article right away. Perhaps by a disgruntled parent, bit the details are so specific. In this case, the new Freedom coach I believe worked in the Independence coach’s AAU organization, and then when he got the job, two of his best players were plucked away. Kinda BS if you ask me. The article below outlines the transfers and then this post was from 2016 with a lot of strong thoughts shared. http://tyrannicalm.blogspot.com/2016/03/statistically-coach-corey-stitzel-is.html?m=1

“Coming from Freedom-South Riding are guards Elijah Easter and Alex Bokman. Easter is a senior point guard capable of filling it up from the field and getting to the line, while Bokman is known as a shooter who does a whole lot more than just three and D. Arriving from Broad Run is junior wing Matin Perdue, one of the most underrated players around. Athletic senior big man Malik Lewis comes from Unity Reed, while tall forward Julian Randolph came from Loudoun Valley.”

Now to Fairfax, it looks like the team to beat will be Hayfield. Also in the upper tier are your usual South County & South Lakes. Any others that come to mind?

Then of course, who are some of the best players to watch? Sleeper teams? Anything else. It should be fun!

Hayfield is the best team in Class 6 this year. They return all 5 starters from a team that went to the state semi’s last year. Greg Jones ‘23 6’7 G/F is one to watch. South Lakes and West Potomac will also be good. South County and Woodson will be decent. Lake Braddock lost Kaiser to Ireton and Solomon to VA Academy so we’ll see about them. Madison is also good. This is just public schools... Hayfield is my favorite. PVI & O’Connell are next level though. The best team in the DMV is DeMatha.

Ofcourse, girls too. Madison is just on a different level this year.

As for the original post, I want to keep this positive. My bad discussing something I know nothing about. The football thread was too over the top obnoxious. At the end of the day, high school sports is all for fun and positive relationships. There's enough negativity out there, so let's only talk positives, and keep the focus on Fairfax.

A few people made the football thread annoying but I really do enjoy it as well. There’s a lot of good guys with good insight and info. Hopefully this thread will be positive. Arlington, Wakefield is down, WL sucks and Yorktown is decent. I have the Wakefield Fall League standings/results if anyone is interested. As for Loudoun, Indy and Stone Bridge are the top two teams. Hayfield @ Indy in a few weeks will be great. SB wants their football players back on the hardwood I’m sure.

Excuse me as I’m clueless regarding ladies hoops...

On the Girls Basketball side of things, this is my initial list of the strongest looking programs this coming year:

Concorde: Madison, South Lakes, Chantilly
Liberty: Langley, Marshall
Patriot: West Springfield, West Potomac
Nationl: Edison, Mount Vernon(?)

As far as James Madison goes, they have loaded up their out of conference schedule to open the season:
- Opening against Marshall this Tuesday, Nov 30th
- Playing in the Paul IV tournament against Elizabeth Seton (MD) and Bishop Loughlin (NY) on Dec 3th and 4th
- West Springfield Dec 10th
- Georgetown Visitation Dec 17th
- West Potomac Dec 21st

Re: the initial post....

Everyone in the region knows that Stitzel is an asshole, and we all could have seen what has happened at Independence from a mile away. The article linked is 100% spot on. He in unapologetic about who he is, what he does, and how he operates.

To him, winning justifies everything, and he has no difficulty selling his previous experience as a Division I assistant to parents who are willing to do anything to get their kids ahead. And there are a LOT of parents in Loudoun who fit that description.

He's essentially the Donald Trump of Northern Virginia athletic coaches. And hey, that appeals to some people.

I agree. I like nova public hoops a lot. They need more attention and coverage imo, but because the WCAC is so talented every year and nationally renowned, I would also like to see some posts about it. However, this should be mainly ffx public coverage.

Tonight's schedule:

Marina (CA) at Riverside, 5:30 pm
Tuscarora at Stone Bridge, 7:00 pm
Loudoun County at Independence, 7:15 pm
Briar Woods at Freedom-South Riding, 7:15 pm
Loudoun Valley at Rock Ridge, 7:15 pm
Brentsville District at Park View, 7:15 pm
Broad Run at Dominion, 7:30 pm
Lightridge at Heritage, 7:30 pm
Jefferson at Chantilly, 7:30 pm
Lake Braddock at Edison, 7:30 pm
Lewis at West Springfield, 7:30 pm
Woodgrove at James Wood, 7:30 pm
Hylton at Annandale, 8:00 pm

A lot out in Loudoun County but not a ton of games of high interest. Maybe LC/Indy could be decent as County has been an excellent program over the last 5 years.

Curious to see the Lewis/WS game. Lewis has been building a young core for a few years and now they're seniors and with a new coach. WS not expected to finish high in a meat-grinder Patriot district but always plays hard.

Tough to get a read on Annandale with their coaching change as well.

What happened to Chantilly losing by 40 to Wakefield? I never thought I'd see a 3000 student school lose by 40 to anyone.

On the opposite note, I caught the end of their freshmen game just now, up 48 against TJ pressing through the 4th and pulling up for a 3 at the buzzer and the coach says nothing. Embarassing example of sportsmanship and makes me wonder what's going on over there?

Chantilly may need Jim Smith, but Jim Smith doesn't need Chantilly. It takes a really bad situation to resign midseason on the brink of 500 wins.

The fight happened and was very unfortunate. It was mentioned by the WF athletic boosters on their social media and the school's hype squad helped diffuse the situation. Today's or yesterday's morning paper reported on how teachers and coaches are really burned out by Covid. Some school districts are in fact taking Fridays off. So it makes sense that something like this would happen.

Is it safe to play tournaments in this epidemic era? I don't think so that it is safe to play. It is risky for the students and how their parents allow their children to play tournaments. I am really surprised. Even, I am also not going outside now when I have heard about the new omicron wave. I am really afraid of this virus. Even, I take help from professional essay writers and find them over here https://www.topwritersreview.com/reviews/studymoose/. Because I can't write essays on my own and I used to take help from my friends but we are not meeting each other and we are attending school only on zoom app. Our school was about to start but when omicron came in news, the school authorities have changed their decision. So, I would recommend you to stay away from crowded places because tournaments can spread that virus more.

Robinson families like to blame the coaches for their child’s lack of athleticism. Robinson has success at white kid sports. They struggle in the real sports.

Touching on three things:

First let's hope the season can continue. Arlington has shutdown all after school activities until January 14th. FCPS has said they will try to continue as normal, but many games have been postponed and a similar pause would not surprise me.

Addressing Robinson, I think their coach runs decent stuff and has them organized, something I would not say about some schools with more wins. Robinson's level of talent is atrocious, they lost to Lee. Coach has had some quality wins, including beating the state champ Stallions a few years ago. It is shocking at a school that size, they do not have more talent and being 0-8 while Braddock is 8-0 having lost their best two players to transfer does not make his position ideal, but it's difficult pieces. The younger levels appear okay, so there is hope they will win again. To Robbie, Robinson has had a stretch of very competitive years up until these last couple, to include a Concorde title.

Finally, through winter break having seen every contender, here are my thoughts on how district play will conclude:

Concorde: South Lakes
-Madison in contention. Think the Seahawks are too deep but Madison did knock off an undefeated SL in regionals last year and is typically a top coached team in the region.

Liberty: Marshall
-Suprisingly very deep team, many guys who can drop double digits and shoot 3's. Only loss was to Madison to open season.
-Contention: Langley and W&L have the pieces to win on a given night and experienced lineups. Langley has the district POY.

Mclean, Herndon and Yorktown are a combined 2-25, and Wakefield is young, so this is a very down year for this district.

National: Hayfield's world. I don't think any opponent will come within 20 this year in this district. They legit have a starting college 5. Annandale and Falls Church both have very decent teams by their standard that will win a lot of games, just not knock off the Hawks.

Patriot: Undecided
-This one is up for grabs, South County lost to South Lakes and Hayfield in very close games, I think they have the most pieces. Lake Braddock and Fairfax are still undefeated though and Fairfax has likely the best player in that district. West Potomac can also beat anyone on a given night. So I guess I'd pick the Stallions, but I do so with very little confidence.

Gotta keep in mind that by the district tourney, if the season plays out, each team will have seen their district foes twice, three times in at least one instance.

Concorde: South Lakes, although Madison just beat Centreville in 2OT yesterday at Wakefield.
Liberty: Marshall. Can never count out Wakefield, if they ever play again that is.
National: Hayfield. They will win a state title this year unless something drastic happens.
Patriot: Lake Braddock. SoCo is not very good, I’m surprised they played Hayfield as tough as they did. West Po is the 2nd best team in that district. They haven’t lost a step despite losing Solomon and Kaiser. I’m not sold on Fairfax yet, SHOW ME SOMETHING!

Hopefully the season plays out, although I’m not optimistic at this point. It’s ridiculous we are canceling games (Yes you, Arlington) even though the players have to be vaccinated and get tested daily. Pure madness. I want to say last year Arlington completely canceled sports and then backtracked on that decision when they were met with public outcry demanding the kids play. Hopefully that happens again this time around.

The public schools suck. No shot clock. Bunch of D3 kids.
