in case anyone was wondering where their taxes go to

So today I had to head over to the FCPS administrative offices. they built this huge new big-ass office building over in falls church close to jackson MS for running the school sytem. Its 5 stories tall with 3 levels of parking as well. Not sure how much the building cost, but they spent quite a bit on the parking garage.

Above every single parking space is a sensor thing. it tells whether there is a car in it or not and has a light above each thats red or green depending on if there is a car or not. Then at the end of each row there is a digital display that says what spaces are availible, what number it is, and how many there are. At the entrance there is a sign that summarizes each floor. Funny thing is, it didnt seem to be working today. Heres pictures

Lol. They have those at the BWI airport too. No wonder FCPS accounts for the vast majority of the County's budget.

Think of how much more revenue they get now compared to a few years ago, what with property taxes sky-rocketing. It's turned into a game of "how can we spend it?" A good start would be paying these teachers and civil servants a decent wage so they can afford these expensive homes.

The parking lot gizmo notwithstanding....the new building MIGHT be saving money.

I personally know of five former FCPS facilities that have been sold and the activities they housed moved to Gatehouse Rd. For example, next time you're near the Courthouse, you'll notice that Burkholder Center on Page Ave is vacant.

FCPS Budget is larger than some Cities and rivals a couple of the smaller states. Funny thing is, they do not have a line item budget like every other county agency. They tell the board of supervisors how much money they want. If the county says no they whine that they will have to cut band & football and other activities, the board caves and they spend the money how ever they want.

Just for clarafication, the FCPS buidling in Falls Church was purchased, not built. The building was originally built by the North American Car Dealers Association (NADA) a long time ago before they moved to Tysons; it had various owners since.

The building purchace I believe was a Jack Dale effort to consolidate many FCPS offices from leased space to FCPS owned space. At the time, the purchase price projected something like a 100K savings over a ten year period and a special referendum had to be voted on by FFX taxpayer. Most County supervisors thought the projected savings was too small.

Essentially, an identical situation ocurred recently for the Lorton incinerator whereby FFX would buy it an run it themselves rather than for Covanta to run it. In that case, the projected revenues from tip fees were not projected to cover the purchase price and FFX declined to follow
