You have to give a serial number and proof of purchase to the DMV and they will give you a registration for the trailer. Make sure you get permanent tags. I bought a trailer a few years back that had no serial number on it and I was screwed out of a few hundred bucks

When I did it 5 years ago for a flatbed tailor kit I got on-line it was a pain in the ass. There is something similar to a title that the manufacturer was supposed to have included with the kit.. but didn't. Without it the DMV wouldn't process the paperwork. It took 3 week to show up after I called to request it before I could go get permanent plates for it.

Do I need to bring the trailer to the DMV along with the proper documentation for registration?

Here's the process in case anyone is interested.

Completely fill out form VSA-17A and NOT the form VSA 14 as directed on their web page.
Bring the Bill of Sale, Certificate of Origin, and sale receipt to the DMV. Do not have to bring the trailer itself.
The registration fee is $70, title fee is $10, and the sale/use tax is $35.

At some point DMV will issue you two VIN plates for your trailer. Rivet the VIN plates on the trailer. Then bring the trailer to DMV so an inspector can sign off that your trailer has the VIN plates affixed.

You will have to apply for a title and get a created DMV VIN number.

I bought one out of state and there was no vin or serial number on it and the DMV told me I could not register it period. If you have a valid title from out of state you should not have a problem as long as you have a bill of sale.

I bought the trailer new online and assembled it. The process involved the manufacturer mailing the documents to the online retailer, the retailer then fill them out and mailed it to me. This include the VIN label to be affixed on the trailer. I guess if the trailer is old and does not have its own VIN, then the DMV may issue new one after some sort of safety inspection.
The DMV kept all the documents I gave them and issued a Vehicle Title for the trailer. I think this is what I will give to a buyer if I decide to sell it down the road.

Isn't there a way to get a title for a vehicle you built yourself without any kit? I have seen guys build their own trailers before, but not around here.

Do not bring the trailer inside of the DMV. The vehicles need to stay outside. Who would think you need to bring it. I can just see some idiot trying to get his trailer through the door at the mall. Keep it outside. And no need to bring in the boat either.

Actually, I think it would be cool to see that.

Please, bring your trailer into the mall with you, and stand in line with all the immigrants. Post pics.
