New Gun Laws start July 1st 2010 (Updated)
Posted by: eesh ()
Date: June 26, 2010 09:34PM

Starting 7/01/10,

People without concealed handgun permits can carry a loaded handgun in their glove compartment or any other unlocked container in the vehicle.

Persons with permits can carry a handgun into a restaurant or club that serves alcohol; they can't drink themselves. There is no requirement to inform the business that they have a firearm.

I support this as much as it worries me. For every 50 people who can handle this responsibility, there's going to be one jackass who can't, and will ruin it for everyone.

I imagine what will happen, though, is that a lot of bars will post signs saying, "no firearms permitted." It's still illegal to carry a concealed weapon in any private business or residence that doesn't allow it, and posts a sign saying as much.

Definitely, with as many jackasses that start trouble at bars, this is just adding another variable to the mix.

This makes me happy :-)

Especially the glove compartment issue, because there could be times that I'd prefer to be packing if I know I'm going into a bad area, but I don't want the hassle of going through the CHP process.

Virginia is finally getting one step closer to Vermont and Alaska. Although, I do wonder how some of the people around here will handle it.

I can't wait! I'm tired of having to have my Glock sitting on the front passenger seat of my truck while I'm driving. It will be so much more convenient to keep it in the center console. July 1st can't come soon enough!

How often are there instances of firearms successfully being used for self-defense? Or do we just live in a paranoid conformist suburb that doesn't know what it's trying to be?

Gumby, if someone broke into your house would you rather have a firearm or not?

Picture 2 neighborhoods side by side. One of them is armed, and the other is not.
Which neighbor hood is the intruder going to invade?

An armed home makes a criminal think twice.

Well, for starters, most states do not have a restriction on carrying a concealed firearm into a bar or restaurant, and there is no corresponding increase in bar shootings in those states. Until now, Virginia was actually the oddball state.

If a bar is a hangout for thugs, of course, the thugs will carry illegaly no matter what the law is anyway.

Also, a sign doesn't really mean anything. Technically the staff has to ask you to leave first, and if you don't you can be charged with trespassing, not illegally carrying a firearm.

All the sign means is that you can expect to be asked to leave if you carry inside.

You are correct, there will be a few jackasses, like Spunky, who get into trouble, but it won't be statistically significant. And idiots like that tend to get into trouble wherever they are anyway.

Let me get this. A permit holder carefully avoided bars because he knew about the ban. But once he's allowed, he will takes weapon in, ignores the ban on drinking with a gun, get wildly wasted and shoots someone.

All the change means is that there will be one less rule to worry about, which will force you to pull your gun out in public and lock it in your car before going inside somewhere. These stupid rules are just piecemeal ways for anti-gunners to ban concealed carry, not ways protect anyone. Just like the stoopid ban on carrying a gun into churches.

It's the same as when naysayers said conceal carry would turn Virgina suburbs into the "wild west" and it didn't happen. We have to suffer through silly dire predictions before they are proven false with time, a small price to pay. If people can't understand that gun control results in MORE gun violence with the two excellent examples of DC and its People's Republic of Maryland suburbs, they should be overruled by more sensible people.

I asked a bar manager last night how his establishment would deal with the new law. He said that they can still refuse to serve anyone for any reason, and wouldn't serve anyone with a firearm. I asked if they would post signs saying that firearms are prohibited (I've seen a couple bars do so, as it's still legal to open carry, provided you're not drinking).

He said "probably not," because a sign saying "no guns" implies that you might have to worry about the prevalence of firearms in such a place.

Here's the scenarios I'm worried about:

1. Currently, it's illegal to drink and drive, but that doesn't stop people from thinking they can have just a couple and be fine, as long as nobody finds out. So, Johnny Six Gun stops in a bar, grabs a bite to eat, and runs into a buddy who asks if he wants a beer. The same rationale that's applied to drinking and driving may manifest here, as well.

2. Idiots who will stop reading after, "Persons with permits can carry a handgun into a restaurant or club that serves alcohol."

Again, I fully support this new law, and I get the point of it; it's to allow people who CC to sit at a restaurant that serves alcohol, have a booze-free dinner, and not have to leave their gun at home or in the car.

However, just as the gun nuts view this as a cause to celebrate, the anti-gun nuts will be shitting their pants, envisioning drunken shootouts throughout Virginia. The first time some jackass gets arrested for DUI, DiP, etc, and has a gun on him, the anti-gun nuts will screech about how that validates their opinion on the matter.

So yeah, hooray, this is a great day for freedom. Now, don't fuck it up.

That's not really a fair comparison. A) Drugs are illegal everywhere, and B) schools don't allow guns and alcohol on the premises, either. I know, there's an exception for guns in certain circumstances, but that's not the point here.

I honestly can't remember the last time I heard about some random guy shooting up a bar. However, I do remember a couple instances of people who were allowed to carry in bars (one was a cop) causing a problem.

Like I said, I get that the point of the law is to allow you to CC on the off-chance you run into heavy resistance at Applebee's. But guns and alcohol do not mix well, and I think most bars are not going to want to take the chance.

Yes, as that has happened in all of the other states that already allowed it. Oh wait it didn't. If no one dies from a person having a conceal-carry permit shooting anyone in a bar this weekend, I guess the naysayers were wrong... I look forward to their posting all of the news articles of the CHP holders shooting people.

Your feeling of safety is totally perceived... don't you realize anyone can break the law and carry concealed? The July 1 law ONLY affects people that obey laws. Do you strip search everyone when you go into a restaurant? How do you REALLY KNOW no one in there has a gun, sign posted or not, either today before the law or Thursday when it takes effect?

What does posting a video of something that has nothing to do with the topic accomplish? Violent people who possess and carry guns illegally are dangerous in a bar or on the street with or without gun control laws. It has nothing to do with allowing a lawful citizen to maintain safe possession of a firearm instead of having to transfer it to a container of some kind in a vehicle.

That scenario is BS. First, the polics aka "mad shooters" know which participants have the firearm and targeted them first. I've never seen a more rigged experiment. I say this as someone who doesn't even own a firearm.

So if you put huge gloves on the defender's hand and tell the shooter who the single person with the gun is in the class, that guy might be shot. OH REALLY? And I didn't catch the NRA training part.

And because Diane Sawyer can't draw a gun and then has the idiocy to wave it around unsafely while talking in the segment that we need to dispense with a tenth of the Bill of Rights? You already have a right not to own or carry, use it!

If you watch the video closely the the gunman takes out three or four people first before he shoots the armed student. The student has plenty of time to react.

Come on, be honest. You make yourself a prime target if you are the person in the with a gun. You are 67% more likely to get shot if you carry a gun than someone who doesn't.

That's not even including the fact that criminals often target people with guns to rob. Criminals can't buy guns so they have to rob people for them.

Bullshit, watch the video again. Pause it at at certain points throughout. The active shooter uses the same technique every time. First shots are aimed at the instructor. After the instructor is taken out, the active shooter goes straight to the peson with the gun, immediately. How can you even make this statement with the video as proof refuting you right fucking there? Incredulous.

Couple that with the bulky gloves and shirt, this scenario is so far from reality it is bordering hilarity.

Speaking of 67, You are also 67 times more likely to get beaten or stabbed to death in some than you are shot. If I had a gun, I am a less likely candidate.

Completely rigged.

1. The shooter is a firearms instructor and trained police officer. Every kill shot the guy made was to the head. Most civilian training teaches you to double-tap center mass, because a human head is a pretty small target, especially when it's moving.

2. The volunteers were taught how to shoot a gun, not what to do in a crisis. Just knowing how to shoot a gun isn't enough.

3. The volunteers were wearing the most impractical clothing possible, short of boxing gloves.

4. They were eager to cite the Virginia Tech shootings. Sure, Cho caught people off-guard in the first classroom. If someone in the second classroom had a gun, though, they would have had ample time to draw it and be prepared for when the shooter came in.

5. Someone intent on killing the most amount of people in the shortest amount of time isn't going to ignore everyone escaping and focus on the guy hiding behind his desk.

6. Diane Sawyer's a bitch.

Didn't one of the students shoot the guy? Sure, she was shot with a "fatal shot to the head", but the shooter is dead at that point. The killing stops. As if the student wouldn't have been in that exact same situation (dead) if she were unarmed. The difference with the armed student is that the killing STOPS at that point, instead of being just a reload point for the killer. Diane Sawyer fails even when she stacks the deck.

They should do a similar one where Diane Sawyer wears a seat belt and then gets in a 'simulated' head on collision. When she is seriously injured with cracked ribs and brain damage they could claim "Wearing a seat belt is just not enough", and subtlety suggest vehicle manufactures should remove them from vehicles.

Or put a bunch of students in a classroom kitchen after showing them how to use a fire extinguisher then having some horrible grease fire start. When they're able to finally stop the fire after significant damage is done, Dianne can sell us on why a fire extinguisher in the kitchen might not be such a good idea.

I do feel a little safer in the woods when there are no bears around. I also feel safer when there are no venomous snakes around.

Really Quest? Well lets begin sanitizing the planet of all bears and venemous creatures and gun-toting law-abiding citizens so that we live in a world that more closely resembles your idealistic existance.

That was part of their opening statement, that these students have recieved more training than was required to carry concealed in over half the states that allow it.

I would have liked to see how they reacted had they been provided with extensive training in how to remove a weapon from it's holster while concealed, how to shoot from different positions, how to minimize the exposed print of their body.

I have been carrying concealed since 1995, and I practice unholstering my weapon as much as I practice shooting it at the range. I find it appalling how pointless the amount of training is required to carry concealed. I took my frist course at Gilberts in 95, and that was basically 2 hours of proper gun handling and a few laws about shooting people in your house, and then 50 rounds through a .38. Over half the class had never handled, let alone owned a firearm in their lives, and after this, they were fully legal to carry. I have since taken several other classes in the area and they range from the garbage that I took at gilberts, to a full two day class that covered as much as possible.

Why do so many "responsible" gun owners recoil in horror when a gun ownership restriction based on proper training is brought up?

I completely agree. You don't take a couple karate classes, say you know karate, never practice again, and still remain capable of going Bruce Lee on someone. There's much more to self-defense than "point the dangerous end at the bad guy and pull the trigger," but a lot of these wannabe Rambos don't realize that.

I won't argue with that, not one bit.

I used my DD214 as proof of firearm proficiency when I submitted my application for a concealed carry permit, and to my surprise it was not required to show handgun qualification. They, the court, told me the DD214 is good enough. There's a lot of people in the military that have never touched a pistol, yet are able to get permits because of their service. I don't really agree with that.

I don't have any problem with better training for conceal carry permits, but also am not hypocritical and oppose firearms safety training in public schools.

But a training requirement for ownership is as legally necessary as requiring grammar classes to post on this site or carry a conversation. The second amendment does not mention a requirement for training any more than the first does. But as with any rights, responsibilities are there for the citizen to know what they are doing with firearms as much as knowing what they are doing with speech.

One thing to keep in mind is that most permit holders will not run into scenarios like what 20/20 created.

At most, an armed, law abiding citizen will use his handgun against a mugger or a carjacker. For armed women, using it against rapists.

Even just displaying a pistol will scare off a majority of would-be criminals. There will be a few trigger happy permit holders, but most will be responsible.

I think restaurants will ban guns at the door to help protect themselves from civil liability. If they allow guns inside and somebody shoots another customer lawyers will be lined up at the courthoue to sue the restaurant.

They will claim if the restaurant hadnt allowed guns in it never would have happened. In the real world restaurants have deep pockets and that is where the lawyers will flock. Is it the restaurants fault, no. But that never stops a lawyer from trying.

Actually two days ago a homeowner in PG County shot and killed a burglar and chased off two others. The group were hitting the apartment complex in the last few days. The cops couldnt stop them but this guy did.

The day after he posted that he got a real-world example. What great service!

Home intruders and the IED planters in the other thread... both groups deserve what they get.

I guess that homeowner found a way to defend himself, despite Qwest's efforts to get huge gloves and baggy shirts on every gun owner. The ABC news video reporting the incident blows away the usefulness of Diane Sawyer's silly piece. One made up and staged, the other very real. Believe whichever you want I guess. At least even Marylanders and the press are identifying who the victim was properly.

Go to VA Arms in Manassas. They have a consignment section, there is usually a few J frames in the mix.

They sell new Ruger LCPs and Kel Tecs in the $250-300 range.

Why is it that most gun owners seem to have a freakess personality and are usually social outcasts?

Do gun owners think a gun makes them more socially responsible or like-able some how?

Or is it the opposite that gun owners want to be seen as outcasts in a community?

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/06/28/AR2010062805013.html

A maintenance man at a Forestville apartment complex shot and killed a home invader Monday morning after the intruder forced the man into his apartment and fired a gun at him, police and law enforcement sources said.

The maintenance man was able to retrieve his own gun inside his apartment and return fire, fatally wounding the intruder, law enforcement sources said. Police said that the maintenance man had not been charged criminally and that the shooting in the 4400 block of Rena Road appeared to be self-defense.

"The victim . . . had a weapon inside the home that he used to shoot the suspect," said Cpl. Mike Rodriguez, a spokesman for the Prince George's County Police Department. "We believe that the victim had every right to defend himself."

The shooting occurred on the same day that the U.S. Supreme Court, ruling in an Illinois case, confirmed the fundamental right of all Americans to bear arms.

Law enforcement sources said the shooting appeared to be justified -- a classic case of an armed homeowner shooting an intruder. It remains unclear, however, how the maintenance man obtained his gun or whether he possessed it legally. Investigators said they were still exploring that.

Police said they were searching for two other suspects who fled the scene in a red, two-door Honda. A police helicopter buzzed overhead Monday afternoon, searching for the suspects and their car.

Police did not immediately identify the maintenance man or the invader, saying that doing so might hamper their ability to catch the suspects. They also said they were still in the process of notifying the dead man's next of kin.

The incident started just before 9 a.m., when the maintenance man came upon the intruder trying to force a woman into her apartment, law enforcement sources said. Concerned for the woman, the maintenance man asked what was going on, and the intruder pointed a gun at him and forced him into his own apartment nearby, the sources said. Officers were called to the scene for the report of a home invasion, police said.

What happened next remains unclear, but law enforcement sources said that the intruder fired at the maintenance man and that the maintenance man retrieved his own gun and returned fire. When officers arrived, the intruder had been shot and wounded, and the maintenance man was unharmed, police said. The intruder was taken to a hospital, where he later died, police said.

Sources said the maintenance man and the intruder appeared to be strangers, but investigators were still exploring any possible connection.

Prince George's State's Attorney Glenn F. Ivey (D) said the investigation was ongoing and he could not say whether authorities were likely to charge the shooter.

"Generally speaking," he said, "people do have a right to defend themselves and others in their homes, including deadly force in some circumstances."

The maintenance man declined to comment as he left Prince George's police headquarters Monday evening. While he was being interviewed by detectives, his mother granted a brief interview and said, "God had a shield of protection all around him."

"Hallelujah, praise God that no one else got hurt," she said. "Prayers been going up, and we just thank God."

The mother, who spoke on condition of anonymity to protect her family from the suspects who remain at large, said of her son: "You . . . write that he's a hero. That's all we know. That's all we have to say."

Maybe you're not paying attention to the thread, but as a person who doesn't want to take responsibility for your own life in Virginia, you're the social outcast.

Nobody likes a pathetic coward who depends on others to protect himself and his family.

A Virginia law limiting handgun purchases to one per month was repealed Tuesday, over the opposition of gun control supporters and relatives of victims who survived the Virginia Tech massacre.

Republican Gov. Bob McDonnell signed the bill into law after it was passed two weeks ago by the GOP-controlled General Assembly. He did not comment on signing the bill, though he said earlier he supported repealing the law.

That's great, although having a concealed permit allowed for multiple purchases before they repealed this law.

I haven't heard of any bar shootings and I sure haven't seen any wild west shoot outs in any of the bars around here.

I guess all the people that posted about that happening used the term "sometime in the future" so that if it happens in 2040 they can still argue they were correct.

Another stupid law put in place by know it all politicians to control people. Im glad some common sense has permeated the wall of distortion.

The only 2 thing that has shown to actually reduce gun violence
-Harsh prison sentences on those commit crimes with guns. So many people criticized the prison sentence for Plaxico Burress as being harsh "He wasnt hurting anyone but himself!" .. "He didnt mean it!" .. It. Doesnt. Matter.. he got off easy because he is a celebrity and still got 2 years.
-Guns in the hands of the good guys. Criminals are cowards, they are less inclined to mug you or break into your house if they think you have a gun.

Couldn't have said it better myself. I grew up in an area of this
country where just about everyone owns a gun and it's unfortunate
that these Liberal urban/suburban hicks who haven't been around much
resort to these kinds of lame-ass descriptions. I'd like to see them
go off on a rant in Texas or Wyoming and see how long they last.
