Some person owns 500 acres of property in great falls and the value of the land is less than 200K. I was just looking at the tax map and noticed it.

It has been subdivided 3 times and is off seneca rd apparently it is a farm and they grow hay so they can claim it agricultral land. Up until a few years ago it was the last dairy farm in ffx county.

That sounds like quite the scam. "Farm" the land and watch it go up and up in value as the area gets crowded, until you decide to sell it and get rich, and pay no property tax in the meantime.

It is called Patowmack farm. After looking at the property value I know of farmers whos assesed property value is more in west virginia. Wonder what thier tax bill is every year $5,000 bucks? BTW they have more than 500 acres.

The family has owned the property forever, its not a scam. It was a dairy farm until 1990 when the old man died 90+ years old. It amazes me that the family has not sold out even through the housing boom and were more than likely offered huge amounts of money for the property. Good for them! It would be cool if they turned it back into a working farm

incidentally, there's a crazy Gilligan's island of sorts in the river near there complete with treehouses, rainwater collectors, circus tent, climbing courses and a suspension bridge, among other things. it was set up by some adventure summer camp outfit

where about is this place? can you google map it?

I think someone posted the coordinates on here a while back. It would be interesting to check it out sometime, but god knows who you'll find hanging out there if you do check it out in person.

What's the name of the family that owns it?

The owners name is Spaulding. Years ago they donated lots of their land to park authority. That is the park at the end of Seneca. I haven't seen the island mentioned by the previous poster, but the river is really shallow and you can
walk to many of the islands.

fairfax county govt. has always given tax break on the property values assigned to hoity toity of great falls and now clifton area

this lot is 216 acres, assessed at $751K with the land being $613K of that total. the tax bill was $8K for 2009.

I recall discussion of the abandoned cabin off the Clara Barton Pkwy but not this particular island. I won't post coordinates since they take kids there throughout the summer, but there's enough clues above to find it (not easily visible on the aerials though). If someone decides to visit, just respect the property and all the work they have put into it.

Look under potowmack farm on the ffx tax website there are 4 parcells 2 that are 250 acres 1 60 acre and a 30 acre parcel.
