First time credit card holder

First time getting a credit card

I put $24 on it. My limit is $500. If I pay the $24 does my credit go back to $500 or how does that work?

Your starting balance is $500

Spend $24, your available balance becomes $476

Pay off the $24, and it will go back up to $500.

Be sure to pay your balance IN FULL and BEFORE your payment deadline every time to avoid late fees and any interest.

Credits cards can be a useful tool for building credit, when used properly. Happy to answer any other questions.

Try not to carry a balance. Keep it paid off, credit card interest rates are a killer. Average rates run about 16 %, and a lot of cards charge more. I think Discover is around 22 %. I also look for no annual fee cards if possible.
If you can keep them paid off credit cards are great to have ,you get an interest free loan plus you may get cash back or travel miles and many cards have some pretty good perks like extended warranties. All cards provide a level of protection when buying stuff online, your fraud liability is limited. I never use a debit card online its harder to recover funds for defective goods or fraud.
Use them wisely and you will also build good credit so basically pay on time and don't carry a balance and you will come out ahead.

Hey William,
A funny thing happened in Basl's Ch. 7 filing: the only debt he asked to be discharged was your frivolous and invalid lawsuit. That's right, because not having any debt discharged would have allowed him to re-file without a waiting period, just in case he did not prevail in the adversary proceeding. You really are a sore loser over that $302,000.

Furthermore, eesh is doing just fine professionally and financially. The shady credit score sites you impersonated Basl and illegally used his SSN on -- committing felonies to obtain and distribute his financial data -- contained old, incomplete, and inaccurate information.

You should have used annualcreditreport.com to get accurate information if you were willing to commit multiple felonies over it.

LOL. Sure thing, Eesh. We totally believe you. btw, I have personally seen your financial info. Your credit score has since been lowered to sub 500. If you're having a hard time paying your capital one and finger hut payments, there's always payday lenders who will lend you a hefty amount with 5oo%.

Sounds like you're winning.

Only use a credit card to get points (typically 1-2% of your purchases). Spend $100, pay it off before the due date. Do not go into debt. My advice is to use your credit card only when you know you have the cash to pay it off. After a certain number of points (depends on the card), you can get cash back. It's like getting 1-2% discount. I rarely use cash to buy things. I use my Visa and pay it off immediately (checking and Visa are both with the same bank so I can easily transfer through my bank's app).

As for debit cards, stay away. They link to your checking account (cash) and there's just too much fraud out there. Have an ATM card and a Visa card only. Banks push Visa/Master Card Debit cards because they get paybacks when they get customers to open new accounts.

Do you think it's worth getting a card that requires an annual fee? I was looking at the Amex Gold. I have the credit score to swing I think (790), but I am not certain I can maximize my usage of it enough to take advantage of the points.

I remember a few years back in college there would be tents in communal areas that banks would set up, staffed by students, to get a credit card. I saw all these gullible 18 year old sign up for a $2K limit credit card at 22% APR thinking they were getting free money...

Look at the fee and look at your lifestyle. I think Amex is worth it for most people. Most people do some basic shopping, gas, etc but a $250 annual fee is far more than what most people would get as cash back. Just think, $1 for every $100 you spend (some are $2, but whatever) means you would have to spend $25,000 per year to equal the 1% cash back. Are you going to charge $25,000 per year? If not, then the $250 annual fee isn't worth it unless you use the other Amex benefits.

This is why it's so important for parents to teach their kids about money and credit early on. Better they learn from you than some sophomore dipshit telling them whatever they want to hear to get commission. My daughter is 16 and already has a credit card "with training wheels" from Navy Federal. She's learning how to spend, save and pay off everything before incurring interest.

Thanks.

I have the Amex Blue card, which is good for things like buying gas/groceries but that's pretty much it. I am overall happy with Amex's customer service and rewards, but was thinking of getting the Gold or Green card and pay the annual fee to get more points. Will look into Discover

Congrats :) Usually all the info regarding your credit card you can find via your bank's customer service, for example I am a client of Merchant Lynx Services and as a rule I find all the contacts from this review https://merchant-lynx-services.pissedconsumer.com/review.html .
