"People came out of the 7-Eleven, near the intersection of routes 29 and 50 in the Kamp Washington area, but declined to help."

I'm loving this picture. People just coming out of 7-11 in the morning with their coffees and all, barely glancing at the attempted abduction of a child as they head off to work.

The guy stood around while the police were on their way? What an idiot.

And if that had been a parent trying to deal with a domestic situation and you stepped in and (God forbid) touched the child, you would lose your career and your life. Sorry that our litigious society has turned good public saviors into look-the-other-way realists that need to feed their families when they get home, not be stuck in some jail cell and bullshit lawsuit for trying to help.

Start reading the newspaper. You will find all sorts of stories 'of interest'. Don't simply place a link to the newspaper...if you want to start a post, voice your opinion about a story.

Absolutely terrifying. A woman playing tug of war over her kid with some psycho in front of maybe dozens of people and just one bothers to help in any way.

I bet that psycho watched them other mornings, and knew their routine of allowing the little boy into the store by himself.

I bet if she had said, "Help, this man is trying to kidnap my son" that people would have helped.

Anyway, it sounds like the guy was trying to get caught. Who tries to kidnap someone and then waits for the police.

Without going into all the details, one of those trespassing charges listed above is mine. This guy has been a fixture in old town alexandria for a decade or more and while we've had our run-ins with him (including the trespassing charge), he isn't an abductor per say, at least not in the same vein as what you would normally think about when you think of a child abduction.

He is severely, severely mentally ill and homeless. When he's on his meds, he keeps to himself and is relatively mild mannered, but when he runs out of meds he becomes passive aggressive and slightly disorderly. Thing is, it's all driven by delusions. When he is not on his meds, his reality is a very, very, very different thing than any of us could imagine and you can tell it by how he acts.

The reason he's got so many trespassing charges is because when he's off his meds, he'll go into a business (like a convenience store or whatever), stand around and just do little things like opening a newspaper to read it while standing in the middle of the line and not moving, or walking around picking up every single candy bar and putting it back or buying something but taking 10-15 minutes to get his money out of his pocket. When the person running the register tries to get him to move along or hurry up, he gets defensive and has on a couple of occasions over the past 10 yrs or so, been slightly aggressive. Nothing terrible or crazy though. It's not like he's running around pulling knives on people etc. Trust me, there are far more destructive, violent and harmful bums out there than this guy.

IMHO, he was probably delusional and reacting to a completely different reality when he grabbed that poor kid. I'm talking, he's crazy enough that he could have been thinking aliens were going to be landing in the parking lot at any minute and he was actually trying to save the kid from being squashed by a UFO. That kind of crazy. Not "I'm going to snatch this kid and run off into the woods and murder him" crazy.

The sad part about it is that this guy has been in and out of the system for decades and they have done absolutely nothing for him. Nothing. He's obviously got massive mental issues and what do the cops do? They pick him up, hold him for a short period and then put him back out on the street with a couple of weeks worth of medicine and just wait for it to wear off before having to pick him up again.

None of this is said to try to dismiss this mother's ordeal, it's scary as all hell and he deserves to be arrested, and I feel terrible for the child. All I'm saying is that this case may not be what it seems.

Oh, and also... regarding people not helping.

I can not fathom standing there and ignoring this but the reality of it is that everyone is better off because of the fact that a bunch of people DIDN'T jump in and/or go crazy and attack this guy.

He's homeless, he's crazy and most times he carries a knife of some sort. The last thing you want to do in that situation is have someone going through a mental break get attacked. He would have gone into an instinctual panic fight or flight mode, except he would have been cornered so no flight is possible and he wouldn't have had any of the social conditioning necessary to control himself or his actions.

In other words, if he'd felt physically threatened in that mental state, he would have turned into little more than a cornered wild animal with a weapon and someone, including that poor little boy, could have/would have been seriously hurt or killed.

Homeless people purposely get 'trespassing' charges in the winter so that they can get '3 hots and a cot'.

The neo-Socialst Liberals have fucked our society by crying cruel and unusual punishment when enough infractions(w or w/o meds) resulted in the courts making a recomendation for forcable mental institutionalization.

There once was a day when these medication requiring loons were taken care of and properly placed in the mental health facilities that would house them and help them live a more normal life. But I guess substituting crack for meds and sleeping in leaves with the spiders and ticks is the easier and "more Humane" way these brainless Liberal PUKES prefer for us to deal with this problem.

FAKE STORY.
Think about it. Quote:

"But as he waited for the money, the man emerged quickly from a nearby pay phone."

A PAY PHONE?
How can you emerge from a pay phone?
Was it like a phone booth?
Where in FRX are there still pay phones?
And if the guy lives in NOVA, why doesn't he have a cellphone? Doesn't everyone?

And why did the mother not provide a doughnut for the 4 year old girl?
Screams of abuse!
Favortism!
I would be scarred too.

There are so many things wrong with what you just wrote. It is not the responsibility of the police force to give mental health advice, medication, or provide any sort of treatment. Their sole responsibility is to apprehend, transport, and protect *society* as a whole and not any single individual.

The fairfax county police are not dispensing medication. At best, what is happening is that a county psychiatrist and/or a doctor in an ER is handing out medication. The cop on duty is not.

If this guy is being picked up and then released, it is because charges are not being pressed or a judge is allowing him to be released. Again, neither of these is up to the arresting officer(s).

Boredom:

I re-read my comment and see how you could mistake what I was saying.

Obviously the cops aren't giving out medication. I meant that the system in general has let society at large, and this specific guy down. He has been getting meds from somewhere and I can only assume it's from the legal system as he has no other resources and is not an active participant in any of the homeless outreach programs in Alexandria, but it's always just a stop-gap. Then it's left up to the cops to just keep re-arresting him, processing him through, sending him to court and then releasing him, only to have it happen again.

Honestly, it's not fair to the cops either to keep having to waste time on an issue like this.

Trust me, I have interacted almost daily with this guy for years & years (when he isn't locked up). He's on a regular cycle of doing something & getting arrested, cycling into court, getting some meds, getting out of lockup & roaming King Street. The meds wear off, he does something & gets arrested and it starts all over.

It's not safe for society, it's not safe for him & it's not an effective strategy. It's also not about giving him a pass. It's about root cause. If something proper had been done earlier, this poor kid & his mom wouldn't have gone through this ordeal.

Problem is, there is NO strategy. I was in a simliar position, did everything I could to help. I realized there was no saftey net big enough to catch everyone and there never will be, unless we change the laws.

The change I would support, is to get these people when they are lucid, and have them committ to someone having authority over them, when they aren't. That is possible, I have that right (regarding money) with a close family member.

The person I tried to help was not the family member, but someone they bought home, as people in this situation, seem to find others in the same boat.

Oddly enough, their choice to hang out, was old town Alexandria.
