THEY WOULD APPROVE! Smallpox was a serious problem in the 18th century, and not just among Indians. Men like Washington realized that taking large numbers of men who as civilians would have lead an insular existence and bringing them together as an army would be a recipe for an epidemic. So they turned to innoculation, a then new process where people were exposed to a controlled dose of the infection. While the Continental Army experienced many problems over the course of the Revolution, smallpox wasn't one of them. The British Army on the other hand was dealing with a major outbreak of the disease, especially among loyalists and escaped slaves, in the Yorktown campaign.
