We did have a say in this. It was called an election, and it occurred in 2019. Virginia Democrats made no secret that they intended to engage in criminal justice reform, just as Donald Trump made no secret in 2016 of his intention to wage war on immigrants from Central and South America.

The idea that we should have a direct say on this is ridiculous. We either are a direct democracy for all purposes or we are a representative democracy. There should be no "if its an issue conservatives really care about it has to be cleared by popular vote" rule unless the General Assembly says so.

Unlike some things this can be changed. A death penalty repealed by one session of the General Assembly can be re-instated by another. If it is returned, hopefully they will do it correctly.

This is such a major issue it should have been on the ballot directly not by a slim vote by the Democrats . Reinstating the death penalty does nothing as those who committed the horrible capitol crimes are now reprieved to life That can not be reversed.

Since we'all have everyone eligible for Constitutional carry, if they try to return we will just take'm out one by one at the border and put them out of their misery.

The death penalty doesn't deter crime. People who are going to engage in the kind of criminal activity that gets the death penalty are fully aware that the conduct is wrong, that the conduct is criminal, and that if caught the conduct will result in severe penalties. Yet they do it anyways. What the death penalty has traditionally been good at is convincing people to enter into plea bargains. Tell a 30 year old criminal who is facing life without parole that you'll agree to a 30 year sentence if he pleads guilty and the guy will laugh in your face. Tell the same guy you will agree to a life sentence rather than the death penalty and you will probably get a guilty plea.
