Young's battered North Sea Cod (package of two)half price, two packages for $7.00. imported from UK.

Kerrygold sliced Irish cheddar cheese, BOGO, so, two for $6.99. imported from Ireland.

Bake the fillets above a pan of water, melt the chedar on top, serve on a bun, with peppered fries on the side, and you can have a fish & chips
meal as good as any take-away chippy across the Atlantic.

For added authenticity, wrap the food in brown paper to show the grease spots, and tape shut with masking tape. Your family will think you went all the way to England to get it!

What a great excuse to make mushy peas.

Remember the episode of Derry girls when they were banned from the local"chippy" because the girls called the propieter "fat"?

After attempting and failing to make fish and chips at home, the girls were forced to march down and apologize so they can get the family dinner. Too funny.

When I make fish and chips this Friday (for Lent), I am going to have the kids wear their footballer jerseys, and I will put the BBC News hour on TV in the background. It will be just like my youth in Milton Keynes.

There will be something different, though, no one will be allowed to say "Piss off" at the table.

When I lived in England I ate at a fish and chips place on Sunday evenings because it was the only place open on the route from the train station to my flat. They still wrapped the fish and chips in newspaper which took some getting used to. I heard they banned the practice a few years after.

There is an old joke amoung newspaper people to call competiting papers "Fish wrap." It was common for raw fish to be wrapped in newspaper, but some places did indeed wrap cooked fish in newsprint. I can remember some places using the glossier paper of the weeklies to wrap cooked fish so the ink did not bleed on the fish.

That practice of wrapping fish in newsprint still exists, but laws, both here and in Europe, call for grease resistant parchment paper as a liner between the newsprint and food. These laws were enacted in the 80's when higher speed newspresses were introduced, which didn't dry the ink as well as the lower speed models.

Most now just us brown butcher paper, but, there are some places that continue the tradition of newsprint with parchment paper, including a seafood restaurant in Groton, CT. They even fold the newsprint and liner in a cone to hold your fries, and if you are lucky, you get a newspaper from Canada or California. How cool is that?

That being said, thanks OP for the heads up on the fish, I will denfinatly go a buy some this week. Remember Giant sales are from Friday through Thursday.
