There are GS-9's and 11's who work for the Federal Government that have to live with a roomate. It is not a problem unique to FCPS Minority teachers. Get over yourself. This area is ridiculously expensive. It was your choice to live here. Go teach in a small town in Pennsylvania and you will be in the upper 20% of income earners in that rural community and live high on the hog.

What utter bullshit. The people who were saying don't pay teachers more were not discriminating between white teachers and minority teachers. Those same people were also saying that Brabrand should not have been entitled to a raise, but instead should be fired. Nobody said teachers should live 3 to an apartment. What was said was that three teachers living together could afford to live in a nice house. Cut the crap and look at the facts.

The current starting pay for Fairfax teachers is more than the living wage for Northern Virginia. The current pay for Fairfax teachers is in line with what most other local school systems pay. The last year that Fairfax County teachers provided a full year of in classroom instruction was 2018-2019. Since then Fairfax teachers have either worked for a reduced school year or have provided virtual instruction for two school years. In those two years teacher pay was not reduced. In those two years teachers did not experience any mass layoffs. In those two years many Fairfax County taxpayers saw their pay cut or were laid off.

FCPS already consumes enough taxpayer dollars. So here is your homework assignment Erika. If teachers want a raise then they need to figure out what programs funded by the schools can be cut to free up the funds for teacher pay raises. I am looking forward to seeing your list.

I have also looked over the posts here. Most are not anti-black. They are against teacher pay increases. Not the same thing. Not even close. Whites make up a majority of the teachers in FCPS. Refusing to raise teacher pay affects white teachers just as much as black teachers and Hispanic teachers, native American teachers and Asian teachers. It affects male teachers as much as female teachers. It affects heterosexual teachers as much as gay and transgender teachers.

Teachers in Fairfax are paid at roughly the market for what teachers earn in this area. A household with two experienced teachers is making the median family income for Fairfax County. Advanced degrees in this area are nothing special.

Teachers in FCPS have to date been treated better by their employers during the pandemic than other employees were treated by their employers. There were no mass layoffs. There were no reductions in pay. FCPS teachers are only now being asked to start having to work in person. In my office people were coming back to work last May. In many fields people worked right through the pandemic.
