I would say some of it is people who put it on when they leave their house, and just don't take it off until they get home. Rather than taking it off, putting it on numerous times while running errands they are just like "fuck it, I'll just leave the fucking thing on so I don't have to deal with it!"

Anyone who insists on turning it into a political statement on either side, STFU. I knew people who would wear masks in the car before the pandemic hit. Mostly Korean women. There are people today, in the landscape industry for instance, who wear them because they are sharing the vehicle with unrelated coworkers. For some masks have become a fashion accessory. Then there are people who just forget they have it on, or don't want to be bothered with taking it off and putting it back on.
I wear mine when driving when I will be running errands. If I don't I will almost certainly forget to grab it when I leave the car and have to return to the car to get it. Its the same reason I wear it at work when I am going in and out of my office frequently.

Not so much that I say fuck it, more that I've become so socially conditioned to wear it that I'll walk out of a store and get in my car and drive without even realizing I have it on. Doesn't happen often, but it has happened

Every study on cloth and surgical masks done prior to March 2020, and there are a lot, showed they are ineffective at preventing the spread of respiratory viruses. Fact. The studies are all still out there. Anyone can find them. Every "study" since then showing any other result are simply cherry-picked statistical analyses or simple "tests" showing those masks reduced the distance large aerosols travel.
Covid spreads mainly when people are around infected people in poorly ventilated areas for considerable lengths of time. That's almost all of the spread. Not outdoors, not people touching surfaces, etc. If you are around somebody for 15 minutes or more it is very obvious why wearing a mask is totally useless. Every time you breathe or talk air (and virus) goes both through the porous mask and leaks massively around the edges because it is not air tight. It is theoretically possible for the mask to be of a little use for a few minutes (maybe) but over time just take it off because it's of no use. It's kind of a catch 22. For a short period of time with limited contact a mask may help- but very few people are getting an infectious dose with passing contact, so why wear it? But over long periods of time it is also totally useless because it leaks. This is why there is literally zero correlation between mask mandates and cases.
Everyone that is able to use the frontal lobe of the brain instead of their limbic system can figure this out. Reasoning not emotion.
Michael Thomas Osterholm (now a top Biden advisor) essentially argued this point on the Joe Rogan podcast. He practically scoffed at the idea that wearing a mask could be effective. A few months later he started singing a different tune. Of course, no scientific explanation for the change in position.
This all being said, for now I am wearing a mask where it is requested. I'm not going to be uncivil. But I will not wear a mask outdoors. Sorry, but that is a bridge to far. It's insanity and only the irretrievably stupid think otherwise.

So I have a 50 year old cousin who 6 months later from having the virus has extreme headaches and confusion. He’s a pres. of a bank and can now barely do his job. I have a niece who is (was) all American in field hockey but can’t run 50 feet anymore...at age 15.

I personally know people ages 96, 90, 76, 75, 53, 51 that have had COVID. They all recovered completely in a couple of days are fine - symptom free. No hospitalization. If you want public policy by anecdote than I get to share mine.

There is a much older woman living in our neighborhood. I first learned of her when she went on a tirade about how healthy people would park in the handicapped spots so she couldn't. Yet she didn't use a wheelchair, crutches or a cane and I would see her walking in the neighborhood. Wearing masks is now her latest cause. Yet the other day I ran into her in the grocery store and her mask is pushed down below her face. I probably saw at least a dozen other older people, almost all women, also wearing their masks around their neck at that same store. Saying you do it and doing it properly are not the same thing.

That study makes no sense. You don’t know the mask compliance percentages. For example 1000 people could claim to be mask wearers always but then turns out they represent 150 of the cases in this study meaning that 15% of mask wearers still get Covid. Then maybe in that same population, you have 10 people who never swear masks and 6 of them got Covid (so 60%).

Hmmm, actually, I think that study says NOTHING about mask wearing. I think the only variable that is different from the control and case samples are that people who have more exposure to people with Covid, tend to get Covid more frequently...which is pretty obvious that you should expect that.

I know a good number of docs in the INOVA system in various capacities. To a person, they tell me privately that it's an absolute joke that the public is wearing masks. The public doesn't know how to wear them, they don't fit properly, they never even wash them and almost all of them are nowhere near the type of material needed to do anything viable in terms of blocking anything.
Publicly and to strangers the docs are forced to say "yeah, wear a mask" but among themselves they know the truth.
