Fairfax County BETRAYS FCPS Teachers again- Strike Imminent
Posted by: TeacherBro ()

County Bros,

It looks like Brabrand has betrayed his staff once again. First it was the lying about virtual learning, and now it's about staff pay. The proposed budget will be the second year in a row with no pay increase (step or cost of living) for teaching staff.

Other districts are finding ways to deliver promised step increases, but one of the wealthiest counties in the US is failing to deliver once again. Some jurisdictions are even giving the step increase (but not the pay) so when normal budgets resume, teachers are at the correct experience level. Fairfax and FCPS have done none of that.

There was already a walkout regarding teacher pay in 2019. If Fairfax approves the budget as it is, there will be massive and lengthy walk-outs. Before the strike, it is likely there will be a "work to contract agreement." This is where teachers only work during their contract hours. No work will be completed outside of those hours (lesson planning, grading, etc.)

Fairfax will be in the news again after the administration's embarrassing virtual learning rollout. How many times does FCPS have to be shamed for doing the wrong thing before it does the right thing? Hopefully President Elect Biden will be able to put an emphasis back on education at the federal level.

You should reach out to your school board member and tell them to support the people who have done such a good job of supporting our students.

Do the right thing, bros.

Drive down Hunter Mill Road to see a worthless, 1 million dollar traffic round-a-bout that has no purpose other than to let rich people turn left out of their shitty, 70's looking housing development.

Projects like this are the reason teachers aren't getting a pay raise.

The roundabout is your transportation tax dollars at work. Even though it still comes from the pockets of Fairfax County taxpayers it does not come from the same pot as the funds used to pay for schools.

The question for the OP is after having been paid in the spring of 2020 for doing hardly any work and after having been paid for sloppy performance (not entirely the teacher's fault, although teacher insistence on virtual learning and on maximum employment of teachers played a roll) for the 2020-2021 school year, aren't you just a little ashamed to be asking Fairfax County taxpayers to cough up more money. Remember our current residential real estate tax rates are among the highest in the state.

Of course, YOUR FCPS superintendent just bargained for a nice big pay raise and a new contract from your Democratic school board. What hypocrisy! He will take care of himself and his $100,000+ club members. All day - every day. the low level paid employees can't even live in Farifax County. They have to travel from Prince William and Fauquier County. The so called leadership of FCPS should be ashamed of how they enrich themselves while others are constantly shortchanged.

Teachers don't need a raise. Except for all your trips to the beach, think about all the gas money you are saving this year.

No joke dick. And since I’m no longer locked up in a classroom with your bastard kids I no longer drink. In the classroom.

This is true. Fairfax has continually misappropriated resources to the most privileged areas. Many teachers cannot even afford to live in Fairfax county. There needs to be a serious change in priorities for our children and education.

There does need to be a change in priorities. It may not however be the change you are hoping for. Individual teachers should not be expecting to be able to acquire a Hunters Mill Rd. home on their own. Still it would be possible for two teachers to find a house to share that they could easily afford to rent.

There are also many parents who are thoroughly exasperated with FCPS, its incompetence since covid hit last spring and the almost cavalier way FCPS brushes off its many failures. So far the anger isn't specifically directed at individual teachers. It would not take much for that to change. Teachers pushing for pay increases would probably be the tipping point. Remember that parents are paying for it too, and the overwhelming feeling is that they are not getting their money's worth.

Using roundabouts instead of traffic signals saves the taxpayers quite a bit of money over time. You are going to see plenty more of them. Stop being so ignorant.

If you have a problem with FCPS leadership and direction, run for school board or choose better candidates. Teachers are the ones who warned Brabrand and Company about the disastrous blackboard rollout- they were ignored.

The teacher step and COLA increase was already in the last budget, it was taken away when this happened. It was put in there to address the low pay compared to surrounding areas. Combine the already lower than average pay with 2 years of no step/COLA increases and there are going to be significant issues in the county.

Other, less wealthy (but better run) counties are meeting their obligations to staff. Even if they don't do a pay increase, they do the step increase (without pay) so that teachers will be payed on experience when normal budgets resume. That is a reasonable compromise.

As I said, many teachers cannot afford to live in the county. If FCPS keeps this up the only teachers you'll have left are the ones with no options, or a rotating staff of new teachers every 3 years after burn out. All the teachers with options will leave so you'll have the leftovers and new teachers who are inexperienced. Staff turnover is already a major problem.

The fact that so many people live in 800K+ houses, but don't think teachers should make a living wage for the county they live in just proves everything about the "MAGA Country" crowd.

VA state employees cannot "strike". That will not be an option. This is just payback for last spring when all the teachers were getting their full pay for doing absolutely nothing. The whole online learning was first and disaster, then a joke. Teachers and students did nothing from March on. Fairfax County has to be bleeding money. Not even to mention paying bus drivers now to "practice" their runs. Good luck getting any kind of raise for a long, long time.

The buses are suffering from "lot rot" we have to get them out on the roads. The fuel in the tanks is starting to go bad. I am going in 3 days a week and driving 3 or 4 different buses each day. The gps devices are draining the batteries so dead that the batteries are having to be replaced. We have pulled the fuse on the gps on most of them. It is a bad situation.

You are throwing around the jargon, but do you know what it means? Living wage is not what it takes to maintain a comfortable middle class lifestyle for a family of four. It is the wage that it would take to provide for the worker's food, clothing, shelter, medical care, transportation and incidentals, plus leave something for savings. Last time I checked the minimum teacher salary in Fairfax County was $50,000. That would not be enough money to buy a house in Fairfax County, but it is more than enough if two or three teachers go in together for them to rent a single family home.

You will next say teachers should not have to just get by. They should be entitled to live better than that. The median household income in Fairfax County in 2018 was $122,000. That doesn't tell the whole story though. The typical home also has more than one adult earner in it, and in Fairfax County the median age is over 35. So to be achieving median household income status we should be looking at what a typical teacher who has been teaching 10 years is making, and comparing that figure against $61,000, or half the median family income. So what is the percentage of teachers with 10 years of experience at FCPS that are making under $61,000? (Data is from Fairfax County 2019 Demographic study.)

What you want isn't for teachers to make a living wage. It isn't for teachers to live in households that hit the median household income for Fairfax County. What you want is for teachers to live in households where the teacher alone could make enough money so the spouse would not work and the couple with their two children could afford to live in a nice single family residence. A great many people in Fairfax wish they could afford this.

A person living in an $800k home in Fairfax County is paying $9,500 in real estate taxes. It could be more depending on where it is. The median home price in Fairfax County is $600k, so an $800k home isn't really that special. Plus whether the home is worth $300k, $500k or $1M or more it is paying the same minimum real estate tax rate. Jack up the rate on that $800k home and you are making those lower priced homes less affordable.

Lol look at this Maga hat. "We're giving them barely enough to live on. What are they complaining about?" "They can live 3 to an apartment". Go buy a mypillow to cry in when the cheetoh in chief is escorted off the property. President Biden is going to raise your taxes and give it to people who deserve it.

Nonsensical ignorant insults. You've got nothing.

You'd probably be shocked to find out there are more anti-Trump liberals living in those Oakton McMansions than there are Trump lovers. Hell even most conservatives in this area hate Trump. They know where their money is coming from. The typical Trump lover in Fairfax County has more in common with you. He's stuck in a job that doesn't give him the standard of living that he thinks he's entitled to. They just won't do YOUR job.

Since you took us down this rabbit hole what do you think a new teacher should be paid? What do you think a teacher with 10 years experience should be paid? Bear in mind its a 10 month job with vacation and sick time, and the County contributes to your health and retirement benefits.

Happy MLK day!

1) Teacher pay should be in line with average teacher pay for the region. (it is not)

2) FCPS should honor the salary agreement in place. (This is also not happening. This would be stealing 2 years of experience pay from staff)

If you think either of those things are unreasonable I guess you really are a MAGA supporter. I'm sure you'll have some "alternative facts" to tell us. Or you can blather on about your election conspiracy theories. What does it tell you that the same people who hate teachers are the ones who believe a magic internet person tells them the future? Very sad. Many such cases.

Pay should be in line? Then you might not have seen this article which came from The Patch last February:

"In Northern Virginia, the city of Alexandria ranks second in average teacher salaries — behind Arlington County — at $78,100 per year followed by Fairfax County at $78,000, Falls Church City at $77,000, Loudoun County at $75,800 and Prince William County at $69,500, according to the VDOE report."

"In Virginia, the average annual salary for classroom teachers was $60,265 in the 2019-2020 school year, the Virginia Department of Education says in a new report."

https://patch.com/virginia/fairfaxcity/nova-school-districts-pay-teachers-most-least-2020

So far all you have done is run your mouth. Put up or STFU. Hard numbers from verifiable sources coupled with the impact such pay increases would have on Fairfax County taxpayers is what is demanded from you. When you bitch about how it isn't what you were promised also remember the weak quality of education which YOU and your collegues have been providing isn't what the parents of FCPS children were promised. Teachers providing their services from home isn't what Fairfax County taxpayers were promised. How many FCPS teachers saw their pay cut off when schools shut down? How many teachers were layed off when FCPS decided to go all virtual for the fall of 2020? Do you think you would have been treated this well if you had been in the private sector?

I don't object to paying teachers. I object to paying them more when they are providing less in the way of educational quality. You cannot say it is the system not the teachers when you chose to work in that system and when teachers collectively help mold that system. If that makes me MAGA in your eyes, I can live with that. I only need consider the incredible ignorance that kind of judgment displays.

I hope you enjoyed your day off. I had to work so that my employees could get paid.
