FAIRFAX, Va. - Officials say there have been an unusually high number of copperhead snakes reported in Fairfax County.

Copperheads are Northern Virginia's only venomous snake.

Virginia is home to three poisonous species -- the Timber Rattlesnake, the Cottonmouth and the Copperhead, according to Fairfax County.

The Timber Rattlesnake can be found in the Blue Ridge Mountains.

In Virginia, the Cottonmouth is only found in limited areas, but not in Northern Virginia.

Copperhead bites have been reported across Fairfax County in Riverbend Park, Reston and Clifton. Reports of snake bites and sightings typically don't peak until between August and October, when baby copperheads are hatching.

Dying from a snake bite is extremely rare, but is painful. It can cause muscle twitching, vomiting and sweating.

If you are bitten, stay calm, keep the part of the body bitten level with your heart and head to the nearest hospital.

Fucking hate snakes.

People's first inclination is to kill snakes when the see them. Don't. They help keep rodents at bay. I've got a 4 - 5' black snake that lives under my stoop and I've seen a smaller one in my bushes on occasion. I've shooed the big one out of my garage a few times, but I don't have any mice problems. The vacant house next to me probably has a few mice - I'm surprised there aren't more snakes around. It has to be like a buffet over there.

Lol, what kind of snake? If it's a Garter or Rat Snake, then they're good. Watch out for the Copperheads and Water Mocassins (AKA, Cottonmouths) though.

When I was a kid, in pre-school, I remember stepping outside to wait for my friend's mom to pick me up. There were these two tall bushes on either side of our front stoop, and I recall looking over to one, and a snake was sticking about a foot out of the bush, right there in my face, just staring at me lol. I came inside and said "Mom, there's a snake outside the door". She was on the phone, and she kind of laughed because she thought I was talking about a worm. Then she went outside, and sure enough there it was. It was a baby rat snake I think, but it was pretty cool (Even though a little scary at the time).

Snake is a snake to me, I'm scared of all snakes....red, yellow, black, blue, big, small, ugly, long, short, crawling alive, dead etc. I didn't stick around to see what it look like. I really don't ever plan to go back to spot where I stepped on it at either.

Don't worry about snakes; they looooove humans. Just look at the bond between this baby and a king cobra.
