All,

The colocation provider that I had utilized to host this server since 2006 suddenly and unexpectedly terminated my service in the early afternoon hours of Wednesday March 14, 2010.

The server has been physically relocated to another cage and provider in the same building (Equinix DC-2) and should be permanently back online with this new IP allocation and uplink provider.

Please note that access to this site may be inconsistent across different providers for the next few hours as the DNS update propagates.

My former ISP, PullThePlug Technologies, who recently changed their name to PRYME Technologies, was acquired by a national collocation provider, Latisys, in March 2010. An individual recently filed a (frivolous) lawsuit against Latisys for content on this website and Latisys immediately folded and terminated my account, even though I had an existing agreement with their senior management regarding abuse complaints generated from this site.

A much more thorough post and explanation will be provided after I've had a chance to perform some server housekeeping. Certain website features may not work at this time but should all return to full operation shortly.

I'm sure it has to do with the arrest search. I can't believe someone would actually spend money on a lawyer for something on this site.

Thanks for providing the site and for your work to get it moved. I wanted to correct some misinformation, though (pet peeve). DNS "updates" doesn't "propagate" (well, they do across the authoritative servers, but it should happen immediately) -- they delay you are describing is due to the old information being cached for a length of time YOU set in nameservers that have accessed the information. There is no propagation per se of this data across name servers.

If the info is in one place and after a length of time is also at another it has propagated because by definition it has multiplied and disseminated. A cache refresh enables a propagation. If you don't like the term you'll need to update a lot of documentation, you should first at least suggest another term for it but I think the term suits fine.

The info is in one place and is pulled to other places only when it is requested where it lives for a period of time until the cache is timed out when it may or may not be requested again. There is no "multiplied" and no spreading from server to server which means the term "propagation" is imprecise.

Using the improper terminology gives people the wrong impression about how it actually works.

I certainly have never written any documentation that has got this wrong, and none of the books I have on the topic commit this mistake. I think the main "propagators", if you will, of the bad terminology are low level technicians and support agents at big ISPs.

As for what people should call it, how about calling it exactly what it is. The original poster should have said "... as the old DNS records time out of caches" rather than "... as DNS propagates".

Your campaign will have a long way to go...searching on "DNS propagation" has a lot of hits, to include Wikipedia. Time to get editing!

But if something is pulled to another place, even for a limited period of time, and a nameserver request is fulfilled from the cached copy then a copied entry was used and therefore that was a propagated copy by the dictionary meaning of the word.

yes, Wikipedia, the ultimate authority. I looked through 10 pages of google results and there wasn't one single authoritative technical result that included the phrase. I saw wikipedia, forums, faqs written by non-technical support people, and other similar resources.

the verb to propagate suggests spreading, multiplication, a serial relationship. That's just not what's happening.

Will you help me propagate a more correct description of the process or do you want to continue to look ignorant to everyone who is in the know?
