Fake Cop pulled me over last night

well we just left the bar it was probly 12 or 1 up in leesburg. i dont live there i was with a friend of mine.. but we are driving down 15 towards manassas and all of a sudden i see this blinking strobe that resembled a cop light on this cars dash behind me.. i was confusd because i know what a cops headlights look like and this type of strobe device i have never seen on a cop vehicle.. so they did it again so i pulled over thinking it really was a cop,, and a fucking honda civic had the light on it....i didnt get a good look though, i was rdy to get a ticket my heart was in my throat....

good thing it wasnt a cop though.. but beware!! if i was a female/or male doesnt matter and they had goten out they could have easily came to my window and shot me in the head.. pretty scary i shoulda got their license plate and called the police for that shit.. isnt that a felony?

I hear if you do not think its a cop. You can call 9-11 and they can tell you whether or not it is.. Impersonating a cop thats some serious bidness

It is a Class 1 Misdemeanor with maximum punishment of 12 months in jail and/or $2500 fine. If the person stops and detains someone, one could articulate a felony charge of abduction.

ยง 18.2-174. Impersonating officer.

Any person who shall falsely assume or exercise the functions, powers, duties and privileges incident to the office of sheriff, police officer, marshal, or other peace officer, or who shall falsely assume or pretend to be any such officer, shall be deemed guilty of a Class 1 misdemeanor.

Still more than they had. They can't do anything at all if you don't tell them it happened. At least it is information, and they will keep it in case it happens again.

If you give that kind of description, plus the date, time, and location -- the police may be able to find this person. Route 15 is a fairly low traffic road around midnight -- and if the offender routinely goes through that area at the same time of night -- there's a good chance the police will find him.

Wow, I guess Loudon's cops dont care if you impersonate them. Lets got over to loundoun and start arresting people.

Edit: Oh yeah, i have a revolving strobe light to put on top of whatever car we use.

I think those strobe lights cost less than 6 dollars now. You'll need an inverter. You could have an entire police force for less than 500 dollars, if you can get enough volunteers.

What some of you may be forgetting is that Loudoun County is quite different than Fairfax County in that they still rely very heavily on volunteer firefighters. It's not entirely unusual to see these volunteers with a strobe light or other type of warning light in their personal cars either going to the fire station to pick up the fire truck or going straight to the scene. It might not have been what you thought it was...just a thought...

By the way, you never stated what color the strobe light was? If it was anything other than blue I would lean heavily towards the volunteer fireman thing...

You know,

About 2 weeks ago I was driving down 28 and a black lexus came up behind me fast. I was in the left hand lane - passing the slow cars, and when I saw how fast this car was coming up behind me, I pulled over into the center lane to let it pass. As it passed me, the car made a "siren" sound, and the driver just gave me the finger!

I know it was not a police officer, but because I did not get the plates etc, I could not follow up.

Local gamer, you have made me laugh out loud, that was a pretty funny answer. The "gosh" indicates you were taking me seriously.

I'm sure you are correct about the lights (I have a medical condition that makes distinguishing between different color lights almost impossible).

I just wanted to make a joke about Virginia's checkered past regarding race relations. "whites only"....

Ok not a funny joke but I try

I went to Kmart with a friend a couple of weeks ago and one his kids bought this hula-hoop that had red and blue flashing lights in it. The kid was playing with it the back seat and my friend finally told the kid to knock if off because it looked like police lights. At night the hula lights up pretty bright.

Someone used this same technique to pull over women on Rt 29, headed toward Culpeper/ Charlottesville a number of years ago. Several women lost their lives. I don't know if the guy doing it was ever caught. That's why they recommend driving to a police or fire station, or at least a very public and well lit place before stopping.

But is it illegal just to have a strobe light on your car?

If you don't want to drive to Leesburg to file a report, you could pass-on the information at the following webiste:

http://www.loudoun.gov/sheriff/complaint.htm

Yes, it is illegal to have a strobe light on your car. The Virginia law is very specific about what kinds of lights are authorized. Those that are not specifically authorized are illegal.

It's immaterial whether it is bullshit for that reason.

The original poster says in the title he was "pulled over", and then that changes to "forced to make way" in the body of his (obviously impaired) story. So he wasn't pulle dover and he really doesn't know shit. He doesn't even know if it was an undercover car. Those can be anything.

I'm pretty sure cops are the only ones that are allowed to have Blue Strobe Lights, so if you don't see blue, don't pull over or wait until you get somewhere very public.

this is correct. blue and red are off limits. additionally, you cant have a strobe lights of any sort unless it's registered and approved by the DMV (ie: parking lot partrol).

I saw a silver nissan maxima the other day in front of me that had a small light bar in the rear window above the taillight. The bar had six blocks of blue/red pattern. The bar would be real obvious to anyone behind him, I don't know what he had on the front. I can only assume he is some sort of leo.
