Most of the people that dislike NOVA dislike it because they have been in the area for so long. This area really isn't all that bad, despite all the talk of bean people and muslims as well as liberals taking over. We are actually in a "Goldie locks" zone of sorts when it comes to economic opportunity/quality of life. There are tons of well paying jobs in our area, decent housing, public services, entertainment, low crime and the weather is very hospitable.

Will you find places that are "better" in some of these categories? Of course. Some will say New York, LA, Chicago, Houston, and many other places are preferable, but most have significant draw backs. Crime, earth quakes, tornados, homeless people shitting in the street, inept local government, etc. I have lived in many cities stateside and abroad and while I actually think the Dallas-Fort Worth is my favorite area iv'e lived in Northern VA is second.

As someone looking to retire soon, where exactly do you think is better? NoVa is overpriced, it is crowded and it is expensive. However there is a hell of a lot that this area has to offer typical retirees that you won't find elsewhere. Most of the people I know who retired, left this area and are happy are people who for the most part moved to communities that they already had ties in. The rest have piles of money and/or are the type of person who could probably be happy anywhere.

NOVA was paradise on earth up until the early 80's. Quality of life in NOVA remained *good* through out the mid to late 90's. By 2000 the the rot had fully set in. Massive gridlock, overdevelopment and the huge influx of the unwashed masses. Not to mention it is an expensive place to live. If you are not currently working at a job that pays a huge salary there is no reason to continue to live in NOVA. There are a million other places that are cheaper and offer a far better quality of life.

Republicans haven't had any power in Fairfax since 2007. Can't blame them for who fucked up FCPS is.

A private school in Nova costs over $16K/year. You get a $4K discount for each additional kid. Only the rich can afford to send 2 or more kids to private schools.

What's so fucking sad is that fairfax used to have one of the best school systems in the country. Now it sucks, just like Montgomery County. All that has happened in the past 10 years. Can't blame republicans for that.

Yet the root of most of what is fucked up in FCPS can be traced back to well before 2007. The funding collapse in the wake of the real estate bubble together with the surge of students, many of them from elsewhere, in the past 10+ years did not create FCPS's problems. It simply made them obvious to the casual observer.

The budget of FCPS is now 53% of the total county budget, coming in at $2.4 billion. That comes to $14,500 per student. Anything that has gone wrong with FCPS in the past 15 years is the fault of democrats who run this place. Plain and simple.

I grew up here. I went to high school in the late 70's. I've seen the decline first hand. This area may have started it's deterioration into 3rd world shithole in the 80's, but it fell off the cliff in the mid-2000's. When the dems seized control of the county about 15 years ago, they embraced the "diversity". Instead of forcing the spics to learn english in order to move ahead in school, they changed the school system to allow them to move forward in spic-talk. I've put my handful of kids through FCPS. It SUCKS. No sane person can deny it.

As I said it may be what you experienced. That does not make your experience an accurate depiction of what was actually happening. I am not relying just on my personal experience. I have posted the data derived from contemporaneous reports. You do the same.

As to Democrats seizing control about 15 years ago, that happened even earlier, specifically 1995 when Tom Davis entered Congress and was replaced by Kate Hanley and Democrats then won Mason District in the general election. County results in the national elections lagged behind Democratic control on the local level.

It wasn't that demographic trends changed 15 years ago. It wasn't that political control changed 15 years ago. You know what did happen about 15 years ago-the real estate bubble. First you have a county awash in cash and spending money like a drunken sailor and then you have a county with severely reduced resources but is unwilling to accept the new financial realities mean it must change its budgetary priorities.
