How's your AC working FFU?

AC died at our Reston condo this morning. Called AC company that we have a contract with and they can't come until Sunday- what's the point of paying for a contract with the thieves if they can't help in a reasonable amount of time? Crazy heat over coming days and we are screwed. Hope you are doing better.

Being a GOP kind voter and not a hater , go get a 300 -400 dollar 110 volt 15k btu window unit and rig it in your back door with duct tape plywood or cardboard if you have to and you will at least have a good sized area to stay cool They weigh 125 pounds so you may have to sit it on the floor with a pan to drain it of water it will collect . You can get a furniture dolly sit it on that move it in and out when your home and cover the rest of the open door with a tarp and duct tape when you use it

Window units of 5 to 6 k btu will cool an average bedroom there dirt cheap about 125 dollars

It may cost you a few hundred but you will have some relief as it can take two weeks to get units replaced here if that is what is needed , cheaper then a motel and you can resell it if you want to take 50% off on Craigslist or get one there used.

My 3 ton unit a basic Trane cost 5300 to replace lately it still saves me about 50 a month over the old one and keeps us cool

Thanks for the window AC option. Condo board won't allow window AC and will fine us. Tried that path 4 years ago and forced to remove the window unit.

You can buy a portable, non-window unit at Home Depot for about $350.

There are plenty of portable AC units on the market.

You might also want to take a look at your broken AC as very often the problem is just a capacitor or contactor. Either of those parts cost just a couple dollars (probably less than $5) and are very easy to replace. A leaking or swollen capacitor, or a fused contactor are typically easy to spot. A service technician would charge a couple hundred for their time and travel though.

No. Portable AC units still require a window to vent exhaust and would violate op’s condo rules.

Go get a couple of Vortex fans, a few of those plastic storage bins and eight bags of ice. Put the ice in the bins and direct the fans to blow over the top of the bins. It wont make your room cool, but it will keep it from being sweltering. Empty water from bins as necessary and make ice runs to 7-11. Drink plenty of cool beverages and take a cold shower every hour. It'll keep you alive till they can replace your unit.

If you call on Friday then Sunday isn't an unreasonable amount of time to come out. You don't seriously expect them to drop previously scheduled appointments to take care of you right away just because you have a contract. Now if they can't fix it when they come out on Sunday then you'd have the right to bitch.

Weather like this is survivable. Wear the right clothing. Try not to be out in the middle of the day. Strategically place fans. Have all the windows open from around 7 at night to 9 in the morning. Drink lots of water and don't drink alcohol. Eat salads so you don't have to heat up the kitchen cooking. Take cool showers.

Or just replace a $2 capacitor....

Its possible that would work if you had the right capacitor lying around. Its also possible you could turn a simple $100 fix into a $500 repair or a new AC unit if you did it wrong.

The OP said he had a contract. As part of our contract we get an inspection each year. Capacitors are more likely to weaken over time rather than have catastrophic failures. Checking the capacitor is part of the AC inspection. Our tech told us our capacitor was reading on the low side and would need to be replaced the next year, so that fall I replaced it myself. If the capacitor checked out OK on the beginning of the season inspection and failed now, that may be a sign of a problem elsewhere in the system. It should be checked out.

A visual inspection is often sufficient. If a capacitor looks swollen or shows signs of leakage, it is going to fail sooner rather than later. Use magnifying glasses if necessary.

Amazon can usually deliver pretty quickly. The local parts suppliers have bankers hours and not always accessible. I try to keep a few common sizes on hand in case Amazon can't come through in time.

HVAC contracts are a complete scam, they come out and pretend to check your voltages and do a half ass job cleaning your coils. Cancel it asap.

Your going to get fucked in the ass on Sunday, you should spend a couple hours on youtube educating yourself on how your HVAC system works.

99% chance your capacitor is bad, to check turn on your ac, go out to your condenser and manually push the fan to get it started (use slim object to get through fan cage). A new capacitor is $15 on Amazon, and is super simple to change out, don't let the HVAC guys scare you, they troll the interwebs for job security.

I think most people can do a better job cleaning their own coils than having someone else do it. But the same could be said for car detailing and that is a big industry.

Yes there are stand alone ac units for about 350-450 , they need a hot exhaust air tube connected to the outside that they come with , window units also can be rigged with a outside hot air exhaust tube. I had a window unit I used for camping, when the AC went down in a condo I rented and it was going to be a week to get it fixed . I set the ac on the floor in the bedroom and covered the doorway with a cardboard replica portion of the upper part of the door that I "hinged" by folding it so it opened and closed like a door The real door was just kept open . I got the box at Home Depot and taped it with ez release blue painters tape to close and hold on the door jamb without messing up the paint

I also had a big sheet roll pan under the ac to catch the water condensation ,I got that from Pinnacle Restaurant supply off Edsall Road Gen Washington Drive area about 7 dollars .

A window unit blows cold air inside or out , you just let the hot air that comes out the rear of the unit go into the already hot condo , a fan in the condo with a window opened will help that .

125 bucks and a ten spot for cardboard and tape and at least you'll stay cool at night plus you can store the ac unit for any future trouble or sell it

My condo was built in the late 70s. Many of the 1,000 units are rocking the originally installed AC. I am.

Why does old stuff seem to last longer than new stuff? I'm sure for $6k I can uprade to a new unit that will save energy... but if it ain't broke, it's hard to make that $6k deal...one day soon, I don't doubt.

Hope ya get yours back up & chillin soon!

Yes, that is the old school work-around.

My dad had the massive window fan he'd install in the bay window of the dining room of our duplex. That sucker'd pull air through the entire house. Sadly, it pulled humid air very well, but, to his point, it was a breeze, even if it was a muggy one!

AC is nice but sometimes ya gotta invoke the work-arounds!

It must be horrible being so poor that you are forced to live in a condo and you only have one A/C system. Have you no education?

Yes you have it made living in your parents basement of a 65 year old house that is cooled by multiple window units.

This is why you don't buy a condo. You have all the responsibilities of owning and you pay a condo fee for that privilege. You have a bunch of power happy petty tyrants micromanaging your life & you're paying conde fees for that privilege, too.

They won't even let you use a portable? You don't have something hanging out the window. You do have a panel in the window, but it's contained within the framework of the window. There is an opening for the back vent, but even that is in the contained panel.

I'd just put the portable in and see if anybody says anything. If you go & ask, those petty tyrants will say "no" just to say it.

My A/C quit last Wed. The guys came last Sat. Compressor has a short & has to be replaced. Has to be ordered. Eveerything's slow due to COVID 19. Lennox unit, manufactured in Texas, where COVID-19 is going up, again. Expect to be without it for at least another week, maybe 2. Got a portable. Have another portable and window shaker from the last failure. It's tolerable, but, with what's on the way thru Wed., it doesn't look good.

I'm sure you can use a portable AC (not window unit) and get away just fine for a long time before anyone bitches. I had one up for over a month while I tried to fix my AC.

I keep three window units in the basement and once a year I plug them in and run them for a hour or so just to keep the moving parts moving. Over the years I have had to use them twice. One in the bedroom window and one in the living room window plus one spare unit. As long as I can sleep in the A-C I am okay. The guy who works on my a-c usually takes a week or two to make it out. No way I would call one of those ripoff companies that advertise on TV.

Tell them that you have a health condition that requires you have functioning AC. Since yours quit you are using a TEMPORARY window unit until it is fixed and they need to provide you with this accommodation under the Americans With Disabilities Act. They are not going to want to pay a lawyer to check out whether it is OK to fine you for a short term use of a window unit, unless the rule is there for structural rather than cosmetic reasons. That will buy you a couple of weeks and by then your AC will hopefully be fixed.

Have fun paying 500 bucks to top your freon on off. There's nothing special about a trane, except that the replacement parts cost a fortune. Save money buy Goodman, the Copeland scrolls go forever, parts are cheap and they'll sell them to anyone.

My Trane has never had freon added to it and it has never been serviced except by me changing the filter, oiling the fan motors and washing the coils clean every Year.

Why is it that heat pumps cool so much better than air conditioners?

They don't. For cooling purposes apples-to-apples they are exactly the same. The difference is that they can reverse the process to provide heat as well. And they don't do that as well as forced air other than in terms of electrical efficiency compared to electric heat.

The cooling capacity of say a 2 ton heat pump is exactly the same as a 2 ton a-c. The difference is that the heat pumps do a slightly better job of humidity removal because of the difference in indoor airflow. With weather like we have been experiencing lately the difference can be quite noticeable.

You know the best rule of thumb about buying air conditioners and heat pumps is never buy a American made one. The Korean and Japanese units are twice as reliable and will last twice as long.

I'd settle for the shitlib sending everyone a $5 McD's gift certificate,
surely it's making enough money to buy the 10-15 people that post here
a cheap lunch at McD's

We still use a gas air conditioner because it works better than electric and it is cheaper.

this... this region is right on the edge of where heat pumps work efficiently
year round. every time we have below freezing temperatures people with heat
pumps have outrageous electric bills. I'd have to live south and east of
Richmond before I'd consider getting one

Heat pumps use larger surface area coils and there is better humidity removal. They really don't cool any better they just dehumidify better.

I have a heat pump. I don't have outrageous electric bills.

The reason why is that the people who built my house knew they were building a house, not a barn.

There seems to have been that confusion when a lot of houses in Northern Virginia were built in the 70s 80s and 90s.......

Yes, if you have a reasonably well insulated house heat pumps are perfect for this area.

Heat pumps work just fine even in New Hampshire.

We switched from gas to a heat pump about a year ago. We have never been so comfortable. Wish we had done it years ago. Our utility costs are much lower too.

My A-C needed a new run capacitor. A big local company came out and replaced it for 611 dollars. I thought that was high but the A-C is now working great! Oh they replaced my dirty air filter too but I had a whole box of fresh filters on hand.

Wow only $600 to change a capacitor? They are very scary and dangerous and require a HIGHLY skilled technician to change out. That clutch job on your car is a walk in the park compared to this. High voltage and shit DANGER DANGER DANGER!

Do you think that this portable EZBREEZEE will help me with the humidity too? I have some problems when it is raining in my basement is always present the humidity. I don't really know what I have to do in order to solve this problem. I started to look on the internet for some ideas and I found this aerostate.org blog. It is about dehumidifiers. To be honest I didn't know that they can do so many things. But the only thing that I'm afraid of is that it will be a little hard to carry it through the house but you know, the result is much more important.

Son of a bitch. Just completed annual HVAC Summer inspection and got ripped to the bone for a replacement capacitor at $175.00.

Get your air conditioners checked now people so’s you don’t end up with a broken unit in July with 2-week wait to repair. You’re welcome.

Ours was replaced earlier this spring and it only cost us about $50. I could have done the job myself and saved about half of that, but the guy was there.

That was cheap. Most companies charge 300 to 400 to replace a dual run capacitor.

Amazon $25.

Screwdriver.

Done.

Might as well change the contactor while you're there for another $20 or so.

Here, we go! High temps over next week+ are going to challenge your air conditioner/HVAC. Hopefully? You've maintained your HVAC ahead of the heat and come out okay. AC technician repair scheduling over next weeks are booked.

Simplest/best thing you can do TODAY-NOW is to replace your air filter!

Good luck and stay cool.
