The Famed Bowling Alleys of NOVA Some Still Here Others Long Gone

Ah the old well known bowling alleys of Northern Virginia, haunts of teenage days with midnight bowling , leagues , bowling alley club sandwiches, fries, sodas and pitchers of cold beer.

Hangout places of so many young people here and favorite Friday Saturday night league hot spots that were once filled with WW2 and Korean War vets who were the fathers of the boomers with moms families and friends girls and guys with dates and lone wolves prowling , everybody rolling up the strikes spares splits misses and classic gutter bal I never bowled a 300 but I did once have a 220 average . Games were fairly cheap , the excitement began as soon as you got into the door and rented bowling shoes then picking out the ball that were once plain black then morphed into multi colored .

The beer was cold the food hit the spot , bragging and betting were part of the fun

It continues today , a night of fun can still be had for 30 bucks or less weekday deals are out there cheap

Some of the alleys I remember, The alley at Groveton by the Dart Drug in the back down in the basement a great place on weekends now long gone, the alley off Edsal Road right by 395 it's still there , so are the alleys in Annandale and Fairfax Circle that were Bowl Americas and jam packed. Another was in Falls Church near Broad Street maybe it's still there. New lanes popped up in Burke and Centerville but they were smaller then those really big places in Annandale and Fairfax.

There were many more so you'll have to fill in the blanks of great spots then and now , as well as who the top bowlers were and are today , the fist fights in the parking lots the hottest cars and chicks , the coolest of the cool things you remember from the past and today . Pics coming. DAJAX the cook , FXU historian of NOVA over the last 50

Bowling is great fun, but I don't ever recall the food hitting the spot. I always thought it was required that alley food smelled like vomit.

Pretty sure the house in Falls Church is long gone, but many of the rest are still there.

I joined my first league at the Springfield Fair Lanes in 5th grade back in the day. "Coaches" consisted of parents (usually moms) who knew how to keep score with the wax pencils on the overhead projectors.

I've been in many leagues since, mostly for fun, but twice coming in the top three .

One year I was in a league that bowled somewhere in south Arlington. Not sure exactly where, and I have no idea why the league bowled there. It was not a Bowl America. One night a friend of mine bowled somewhere around a 260 game and they had his name up on the wall the rest of the season. Best I ever did was 225. My normal game then was between 150 and 170.

I recall at one time there was an alley on Main Street in downtown Fairfax. I think it was in the basement of a building.

I remember bowling with duck pins as a kid. These were like minature 5" bowling balls with no holes. Great fun as a kid. I can't remember the location; some where in Fairfax county and it was supposedly the only duck pin bowling alley left in Northern Va (I have no idea if that's true). The snack bar had great fries and old school fountain sodas.

WHAT ABOUT THE FAMILIES WHO, DEFENDED THEIR COUNTRY, WORKED THEIR ASS OFF TO PAY RENT AND HAVE MONEY - who didn't get money for bowling by schmoozing a $100,000 yr gov job or being an illegal alien in the USA gov?

THEY ARE NO LONGER IN FAIRFX

the bowling alley might be standing - but it's standing in enemy territory: socialist, communist, completely invaded by non-denizes

Rinaldi lanes in Alexandria. Used to get off work at midnight and a bunch of us would hit Rinaldis and bowl while making trips out to the car to drink beers and hit the power flower. This was early 80s, good times bro.

With the sounds of balls hitting pins and seeing friends waiting already into the beer as we waited for the women we had coming to join us for fun and frolics later

A duck pin alley at Fairfax Drive and Glebe Road in Arlington where the Metro tunnel comes above ground in the middle of I66, called Playmore Lanes. 1960's and 70's it was a great place for birthday parties, pin ball and duck pin bowling. Not sure if it had ten pin lanes on the other side or not, but duck pins for sure.

Scoremore Lanes was a ten pin Alley located off Quincy Street across from Washington and Lee High School in Arlington,

Even worse than that were the creepy guys who were always hanging out and playing pinball or other arcade games.

Some of us take our dates bowling before we have sex with them. Woman throws a strike, a spare or sometimes just manages to knock down more than five pins, she starts jumping, her boobs start bouncing. Probably more fun on a date than whatever you have to do to get a woman to have sex with you. Definitely cheaper.
