No matter what Never Vote For The Democrat If anything should be done with DC it should be given back to Maryland with a small Federal District of just the US Capitol the White House and the mall in it . To cede it back to Maryland would require approval of Maryland's state house which is controlled by Democrat's who will say no as they want two extreme far left US senators to pack the senate and make it easier for Democrats to take the majority there to confirm or deny all federal judges and justices so they can rig the laws of the land for the leftists.

I oppose the idea of statehood for DC. It does not have a large enough population and it does not command enough territory. Yes I am aware that the population of DC is larger than some states (if you don't include cows), but there are cities with far larger population than DC which are not independent states.

That said there is absolutely nothing unconstitutional about DC becoming a state. That it is done for political purposes, to produce two more Democratic Senators, is not a valid constitutional objection. Republicans have in the past bent the rules to get states admitted to give them more representation in Congress and more electoral votes in presidential elections. (This is why we have two Dakotas.) That DC was originally created to be a Federal enclave is also not a sufficient constitutional objection. Arlington and Alexandria were at one time part of that same enclave. Plus DC boundaries could be defined to exclude certain Federal properties such as the White House, Capital, Supreme Court building and the Mall preserving a portion of the Federal enclave. There is also something that smells bad in an arrangement where DC residents are subject to a draft and are liable for U.S. income taxes, yet don't get representation in Congress.

So the proper solution: Amend the Constitution to allow DC to have budgetary and legislative autonomy and to have a voting member in the House.
