Third Grader Hacks FCPS Blackboard Accounts
Posted by: I love Tom Jackman's Reporting ()
Date: April 15, 2010 03:52PM

Are you smarter than a third-grader? Because the online education system used by the Fairfax County public schools apparently is not.

Police say a 9-year-old McLean boy hacked into the Blackboard Learning System used by the county school system to change teachers' and staff members' passwords, change or delete course content, and change course enrollment. One of the victims was Fairfax Superintendent Jack D. Dale, according to an affidavit filed by a Fairfax detective in Fairfax Circuit Court this week.

But police and school officials decided no harm, no foul. The boy did not intend to do any serious damage, and didn't, so the police withdrew and are allowing the school district to handle the half-grown hacker.

"It's a warning," said Paul Regnier, the Fairfax schools spokesman. "No damage was done, but we went to Blackboard to work with them and make sure somebody else isn't able to do this and cause real harm."

A Blackboard spokesman did not immediately return a call Wednesday seeking comment. Blackboard enables teachers and administrators to post assignments, host discussions and track grades, and students log on to do their work from home. Blackboard's Web site says its software is used by more than 5,000 institutions, including government entities that use it to train or share information with workers. It is also used at George Mason University.

In January, students at Churchill High School in Montgomery County broke into their system to change grades, but that involved stolen passwords, not hacking, and did not involve Blackboard, Montgomery police said.

The Fairfax schools' network security manager reported the breach to police March 22, according to a search warrant affidavit written by Detective Brooke D. Ware. The manager found that most of those targeted worked at Spring Hill Elementary or Churchill Road Elementary schools and that a student's account at Spring Hill had been enabled with administrator privileges, Ware wrote. System administrators typically have the authority to enter the accounts of most or all of the users in a system.

The schools found that the changes to passwords and course work were made from the same IP address. Police obtained a court order from Cox Communications to track down the original computer and then targeted a home in McLean.

Investigators initially suspected the boy's mother and obtained a search warrant for her home computers. But an intensive police investigation -- speaking with the mother and the son -- quickly identified the true culprit, and police decided he didn't deserve a spot on the chain gang just yet.

"He's a very intelligent 9-year-old," Officer Don Gotthardt said, "with no criminal intent." Regnier declined to discuss what might happen to the Blackboard eraser or provide his name, citing confidentiality laws.

When I was in 3rd grade, no one even had the Internet (except for the DOD, and some scientists). In 6th grade though, I did figure out how to take a disconnected computer at my school, and network it (My friend and I were bored during lunch, so we decided to figure out how to hook up the modems, and then I don't even remember how we got online from there, but this was way before the FCPS T1's, or even Cable/DSL). We were pretty damn proud, and no, we didn't cause any trouble.

So did he really hack in or did he just access it through someone's password? I bet that kid can get a job if he did hack it.

And it's a good thing all he did was mess with computers, if he'd brought a toy weapon to school or had tylenol on school grounds, he'd have been expelled. Glad it wasn't anything so serious.

And I agree with Geely, system is a POS and half the teachers don't even use it. Even though they are supposed to.

I can't find anything showing how he got the administrative privileges/teacher's account, but according to the Washington Post, he did exploit those privileges to change the superintendent's password.

"Fairfax schools spokesman Paul Regnier said the boy was able to use that access to enroll other users, including Superintendent Jack D. Dale, into his class and could then change their passwords. "

from http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/04/15/AR2010041505517.html

I'd lump that into hacking as a generic term.

He's not very smart if he didn't use a proxy. In all likelihood, this is how his "hacking" probably took place:

1. He went to the Blackboard site and clicked on the "forgot my password" link. This sends an email associated with a blackboard account that allows you to change the password
2. He logged into his teachers/administrators email addresses. This is easier than it seems because the password for FCPS.edu email addresses is normally the network's password. A lot of the schools use something simple like "FCPS" as the password.

He's a third grader. I think the point is that the security was so fucking lax, not that the kid was some kind of genius.

This is true. Blackboard has been around FCPS for a while, but few people take it seriously. You'll see a small increase in usage shortly after a teacher training session, but interest usually fades quickly.

Only universities really use Blackboard in a hardcore way.

Clearly we're not talking a hack that involves uniquely creative coding, which would earn this young man much respect in the hacker community.

Nor are we talking about someone who misused his position of trust, such as a rogue system administrator, which earns no respect at all.

Many (most?) successful hacks involve appropriating a password. Somehow he managed to do this. Then he figured out how to creatively use it. Enrolling the Superintendent in his own class and taking it to the next level by changing the Supe's password to gain higher access was brilliant for a third grader. And he exposed a serious weakness in the current system procedures.

The keystone cops must have thought themselves pretty clever tracking him down. If only they were clever enough to have prevented it from happening.

I think this kid deserves some kind of award.

If the FCPS is willing to spend a couple million on the security of the system it could be a lot more hack proof. Good computer security systems are not free.

The most hackers are going to get is some teachers lesson plans. It's not like there is top secret military information on FCPS computers. Password level security should be fine. No need for retina scan devices or key cards on every keyboard.

Blackboard is a large piece of software provided by Blackboard Connect, Inc. They were responsible for the coding of the software and the failure to secure it. FCPS IT simply implements it. Now, since FCPS has a huge number of users (more than most universities) it has a greater pool of people to hack it, and also more staff to prevent and catch the hackers (which they do quite successfully). A school system of lower quality, like JMU maybe, would not have noticed the intrusion for weeks.

Blackboard is certainly not cheap. It also doesn't have a great user interface. I'm not sure why so many places use it, because I think it sucks. (perhaps due to a lack of other options)

Blackboard doesn't calculate student's grades; teachers use Integrade Pro for that. So you dont have to worry about your grades being compromised by a 9 year old.

Linux is free and is arguably the most secure operating system available. Some will say that this is because it is open source and there are hundreds of people working on it, trying to find holes in it so they can make it more secure. I say it is because so few people use it.

Aww Thanks. Most of the SBTS' who are school based concentrate solely on stopping kids from accessing Facebook. The TSSpecs are a little more intelligent, but the really good people work in the central offices. Since it has one of the largest computer networks on the east coast, FCPS has some very good people working to keep the computer systems secure, especially with the Chinese trying to hack in several times each hour. But of course we must reduce the central office staff since they don't do any actual work.

I can't believe any NINE year old did this on his own!!! I am most certain he had some help from a PARENT!! I have a 9 year old and he could care less about Blackboard! He would rather be outside playing with his friends! But, as a parent forced to use this site and forced to "GO GREEN" I would be motivated to take it down so we can go back to paper every Wednesday like I have known for the past 6 years of elementary school life!

Clearly, your experience with children only includes ones not adept with computers. If the kid is interested in them, it's not that difficult to do, especially since they said he did it with a user's account.

As for 'going green' be patient, your school will get lax with it just like others have. We've got teachers that NEVER use it. Some claim they do, but don't. And others that only post certain things on it. Your guess is as good as anyone's as to why they bother at all then. But there are a few teachers that use it faithfully and criticize stridently if parents and students aren't checking it daily.

You're complaining about elementary school, try it with 7 or 8 periods, and multiple students. Pain in the ass. Some put the work in announcements, some put it in homework, some create a whole new place that you have to delve down to get and see if anything new's been put up. WAste of time. Nice idea, very poor execution.

i love how Springhill and Churchill ES, aside from being on absolute opposite sides of the shitiness factor, Spring Hill at the bottom, were the two elementary schools I attended, and possibly the absolute nerdiest (Outside of Haycock ;). I remember in third grade (2005) one of my friends hacked our 1892-issue Apple Macintosh and made the internet browser, whatever the hell it was then, display a lemonparty.org-esque window that you couldnt close. that was a damn nice week i had. I'm not surprised a thrid grader could hack the 1700s-ish crappiness of Balckboard and fuck with some passwords. If I had 7 hours of free time after school like most third-graders, I would be running blackboard. screw their godddamn it dept. And to that guy that remembers IT specialists at floris knowing shit nothing, you arent alone pal. the smartest thing the CRES teacher ever did was stop me from running in the halls.

Why are you shocked??

Kids nowadays are raised with technology!
My 6 year old has been on a PC since 2. We gave him his own account on the PC, (with big time parental controls in place, of course), and the kid was able to download & install tons of games from the internet, create folders for such, and mark bookmarks accordingly at age 3, without being shown!

We've moved recently and didn't have internet for a bit until FiOS could get their asses to my house, and he connected a laptop to a neighbor's secured WiFi network.

We tried redoing this ourselves, but we have no idea how he got around the secured network! He then proceeded to download all of his favorite games by typing in the websites that which they're located.

He's also figured out the new FiOS DVR within a day's time and has a few of his fave shows on auto-record, lol!

Some kids just "get it." And nowadays, their knowledge and capabilities shouldn't be underestimated with regards to technology.

Wow... I did this as well, never found an admin account, but is what I assume is he did it at the very beginning of the year, at which time the user field is automatically reset to the password field.

Either that or he googled some SQL injection...

EX: my login was 9489769

on Sept. 1 each year my password is 9489769 as well... I have put in random numbers and succesfully changed other peoples passwords just because I was bored.
