What are the laws concerning knives; specifically, the carrying of a non-concealed knife, and are there knife designs, blade sizes, etc., that are prohibited?
Virginia Code Section 18.2-311 describes certain weapons, including some knives, which are illegal to possess in Virginia. Additionally, refer to Virginia Code Section 18.2-308 for specific prohibitions concerning concealed weapons. It is suggested that you contact your county or city authorities to inquire as to whether or not there are applicable local ordinances.

You can carry a ninja sword if it is NOT CONCEALED. Of course it would have to be in it's protective sheath.

What are the open carry laws concerning broadaxes?

And scimitars too. Can I take them into parks now?

Yes you may bring your katanas, broadaxes, and scimitars with you, properly holstered that is.

I'm not sure about the specificity on the knife type/size regarding the law, but I do know for a fact that as long as the blade of the folding knife is under four inches itself, then the cops aren't going to give a damn (It's the same standard even in weapon strict England). If they have reason to disarm you (After being detained for instance), most often they just measure it against the palm of their hand.

and you have to have a good reason, for example, a night club bouncer would be charged for having a stanley knife in his pocket, as opposed to a carpenter who would not be charged, however, if you used it in a violent way, even in self defence, anyone would be charged.

thats why we love our mini swiss army knifes, anyone can make up an excuse for one of them.
