Ironically the Morenos' case was invalid from the outset, but that was discovered until after the judgement was discharged in Federal Court. William Moreno was not legally qualified to be a plaintiff as his assets were in an OBRA Trust. The Morenos concealed this fact from the court as well as their own attorneys.
Basl was an unemployed community college student with no legal training. Yet he argued and won a complex case in federal court. He not only defeated an experienced team of lawyers but he won a landmark victory based on legal merits alone. That is a significant accomplishment.
The case itself, Moreno v. Basl, has been cited as precedent in other cases, documented in legal journals and texts, and is taught in law schools throughout the country. It was very impressive.
Basl also subsequently won a civil monetary judgment against the Moreno's investigators.
