Wow, you sound really dumb but i guess i cant do anything about that. I was there, and that was definitely a student riot. Cops were there because the students were starting fires and being wreck less. And dont tell that guy he didnt go to college you dumb fuck, he's right the JMU student life is based on getting drunk most of the time.

springfest needed to be broken up by riot cops not cuz its too wild but because its that damn gay. it doesnt deserve the fest at the end of the spring. what it comes down to is cops in VA deal with a bunch of pussies so too them a simple gathering or fire is the end of the world.

I don't understand how Radford is so much smarter when it comes to throwing large college parties. Quadfest never gets this out of hand, yeah maybe some people get arrested here and there, but never this bad. I am not hating on JMU or its students it just sucks when nationally ranked colleges get busted for just having a good time. This doesn't just hurt JMU's reputation, but the State of Virginia as well. Hope Springfest 2011 is less eventful for you guys!

What is all this "the police had no right to be there" nonsense?
It was 8,000 drunk idiots (most being underage) throwing beer bottles at building windows, each other, and the POLICE. Let's not forget the dumpster fires, stabbing/fights, and complete disrespect and disobedience of all authority figures. The President of JMU himself even issued a letter to the students:

Dear Students:

Let me first acknowledge that many of you did not attend springfest on Saturday. To those of you who were involved, your collective behavior was an embarrassment to your university and a discredit to our reputation. No one is opposed to some fun on a beautiful spring weekend, but public drunkenness, destruction of property, and threats to personal safety are unacceptable outcomes. Yesterday's events reflect poorly on your character and were demonstrable evidence of less than sound judgment.

As a university community, we care about our neighbors. Unfortunately, the events of this weekend do not reflect that concern.

To mitigate the negative consequences of these types of situations in the future, we will be conferring with students, property owners, law enforcement, including the Virginia State Police, government officials and others.

Linwood H. Rose
President

For all of you on here saying that this event will not reflect poorly on JMU, THE PRESIDENT OF YOUR UNIVERSITY happens to disagree. You all (you, your friends, whatever...) messed up and let this get out of control. Stop complaining about what the police did to PROTECT you, get off your asses, and go help pick up the aftermath. It's pretty much all you can do at this point. Honestly though, no one wants to hear your teenage angst with this "fuck the police" crap. You can thank them that what happened didn't escalate further. You went to a riot and subsequently you got treated as if.... wait for it.... YOU WERE AT A RIOT! Imagine that! Welcome to the real world kids.

Absolutely... what happened there over one weekend has absolutely nothing to do with me. Were I a senior going to an interview today I'd certainly bring along receipts or proof I wasn't in the area at the time of that event for kicks, but for a company to reject the potential talents of 4,000 or so grads per year from JMU because of a single block party located in the same city that the cops showed up for is absurd.

Anyone criticizing JMU students for last weekends activities are all morons. Students who attend this amazing school are both well-educated and like to have FUN. Students here are all so nice and accepting. The police went too far by tear gassing everyone, although they were just trying to stop the mayhem. JMU is the best, fuck the haters.

The police did not go too far by using tear gas. There was a crowd of 8,000+ drunks who were lighting dumpsters on fire, throwing glass bottles (at people, cars, and houses) and knocking down street light posts. I think tear gas was absolutely necessary.

JMU's education and nursing programs are both top nationally known programs. The college of business is ranked 40-something in the nation. I go there and I was embarassed by Springfest. However, I would say 80+ percent of the people who were causing the main problems were from other colleges or were the local Harrisonburg white-trash meth heads and gang members. The JMU students who participated in the riot activities were mostly all either the frat douches every school has or the jackasses from NJ or rural VA who got in to JMU because they were the only ones from their high schools who applied. My friends at JMU all come from good backgrounds, participate in clubs and sports, and know how to party and drink without getting tear gassed. They had the common sense to leave when beer bottles started getting used as weapons.

It's kind of sad, really. JMU has an ugly campus, smells like dog food and is in the middle of nowhere. Of course those kids are going to riot; there's nothing better to do. Should have gone to W&M or UVa, you know, nice VA schools.

Absolutely.

I love JMU. Everyone bashing it has obviously never set a foot on campus. Reasonable individuals realize that JMU students would not destroy the property that they or their friends live on. The University, the community, and the majority of students are victims of the absolutely ridiculous and irresponsible actions of out of town visitors.

Proud student, not only have I been there (had a good friend from H.S. who went there), I've been to Springfest. I admit, I had fun. But Harrisonburg is a crappy town, there aren't many good restaurants, the campus looks like a high school, the entire place smells like dog food and there are hippies and gangsta kids everywhere. I will admit this: there are lots of gorgeous girls there.

Part of it actually was a high school. The campus bought it a few years back along with a bunch of other land. I never noticed the dog food smell, but I will agree that time looks like it forgot Harrisonburg about 60 years ago. The most active part of the town is the Super Wal Mart + Home Depot shopping center.

The video that "sdafasd" posted bothers me. At the end of the video, to me it looked like the police came after the cameraman with tear gas though all he seemed to be doing was film and stay out of the fray. What I saw was 3 police officers who decided they didn't like being filmed. Shouldn't there be some provision that the community can monitor our public servants without being accosted. How else are we going to ensure the system of checks and balances? “Absolute power corrupts absolutely.”

Jmu should quit trying to act like a big time school. they have a high school football stadium. the highway goes right through it and once youve driven by once youve seen it all. not only do they have a high school football stadium but their team sucks their fans dont know how to tailgate. they certainly do not know how to party. yeah they have a high girl to guy ratio but after awhile i think that would get annoying. i mean the best shit at parties happens when dudes either fight or do stupid shit. it snows every year thats gay. their dorms tower over their football stadium instead of the other way around. people who go there talk about how good they are academically but VT UVA an W&M are all better and VT even has a somewhat respectable football stadium but their team still sucks balls. JMU is in harrisonburg not to be confused with the equally shitty harrisburg PA. used to be an all womens school thats really gay. if JMU did not exist would the country be greatly affected? NO

facts, I also thought that number was extremely fishy. Accepting 3K out of 19K would be a 15.7% acceptance rate, which is about that of Dartmouth, one of the very top schools in the country. Hell, I think UVA, which is the best state school in VA, has an acceptance rate of 35% for undergrad. I think what Laura meant to say, had she looked more closely at the numbers, is that 19K students applied and 3K students entered the school in her class, which effectively tells you nothing about how selective the school is. Judging by the posts by JMU grads on this thread, it's not very selective at all, which is fine. People got to throw their money away for college somewhere.

The biggest party on the east coast that attracts thousands of people from places other than the university is actually Quadfest at Radford, jerkoff. The police won't be sued by anyone, since they acted in compliance with every procedure in the book. After asking the students/nonstudents/deliquents to disperse, they failed to do so. After having beer bottles thrown at them by the rioters, they administered tear gas. You should be thanking them for not using rubber bullets instead.

They did in fact use rubber bullets; my friend got shot in the face twice. He said (and he heard this secondhand himself) that he was throwing a teargas canister back at the officers.

The JMU acceptance rate is based on an applicant number that comes from everyone who accesses their prospective student web area, whether they start an application or not. Skews the number to make them look more selective.

Who the hell would want to go to an overrated Teachers College like JMU? Hell, may as well head to Farmville and attend Longwood.

JMU has a higher 4 year grade rate than the national average and higher than every public college in Va except UVA & W&M.

Higher than VTech, ODU, CNU, VCU, Radford, Longwood, GMU, Norfolk State and VSU.

Another very good reason not give your kid a car, IMHO. It probably came back (if at all) with a window or two smashed.

Maria...the person who murdered the guy at a JMU party didn't go to JMU and WAS FROM HARRISONBURG. So, you pretty much just contradicted yourself. Harrisonburg would be nothing without JMU. There are so many service minded students who do a lot for this community and you should appreciate that. Everyone I know had friends in town from other schools this past weekend so half the people who were at Springfest don't even go to JMU, and the people who caused the most problems were townie thugs. Get your facts straight, and don't worry... most of us will gladly leave Harrisonburg when we're done with our education because that is the only reason why we are here.

If this is actually the case, it's patently dishonest. JMU should be ashamed of itself (although judging by the reaction on this thread, shame is not a characteristic many at JMU possess).

To all of you talking about how horrible JMU is... clearly you don't know anything about JMU. JMU students are generally nice people, nicer than students from any other college I've visited (and I've visited upwards of 15 on the east coast). The academics are a "fail"? Are you kidding me? You do not even deserve to speak on this blog. Virginia Tech is easier to get into now (at least from my high school), which at least shows the type of students JMU is getting. Estimates from the cops I talked to were that only 2000 of the 8000 at the blockparty were from JMU and only a handful of the arrests were JMU students. I'm not saying its partially our fault for the events of this weekend, but do not talk down to us like we are some worthless swine. When you get thousands of college-aged kids at someone else's college, bad things happen. I thoroughly believe that this weekend wouldn't have even made our campus newspaper if it was just JMU students attending our block party. Some cops that I spoke to believe the same thing. I may not be the most well spoken person in the world, I understand that (I'm a CIS major, one of the top ten IT majors in the country actually), so don't bash me if my grammar isn't perfect. JMU... work hard.. party hard
... and harrisonburg... you wouldn't have an economy without us... get out if you don't like us

What's your source? You realize that saying "#1 Masters-lever school" is like saying #1 school in Virginia that's located in the Valley and was originally a women's college. The category itself is so narrow, that there aren't that many schools that would even be covered.

Law Enforcement 101 makes it clear that the community must enforce the laws. Police without community support can do nothing. Despite the fact that locals would disagree, the community is a STUDENT community. The Harrisonburg Police lost the respect of the student community through a consistent pattern of rights violations and petty law enforcement over the years. Student non-cooperation and disrespect for law enforcement in Harrisonburg is to be expected.

A well publicized example of petty law enforcement was charging 2 JMU students with felonious “launching of a missile” for throwing a snowball at a police cruiser. The charge was absurd.
An example of the repetitive rights violations is the failure to provide a Miranda warning before coercing a confession of guilt from minors charged with “underage possession” of an alcoholic beverage. Harrisonburg Police Officers typically threaten to take the young person to jail unless they confess to the crime. Clearly, this supplies the measure of compulsion above and beyond that inherent in custody itself conceptualized in the Miranda opinion

Approximately one thousand JMU students are charged with violation of Virginia Code 4.1-305 each year. In every case the student’s Constitutional privilege against self-incrimination is violated. This is just one category of errant law enforcement. Harrisonburg derives millions of dollars in fines from the JMU student community every year. It has distinguished itself among all municipalities in the country for the percentage of minors so accused. Can there be any wonder that Harrisonburg Law Enforcement disrespected? In fact, it is the zeal for such enforcement that must be wondered at.

So, let me get this straight: The out-of-control violent drunken behavior displayed by the mass gathering of low-IQ adolescents at SpringFest is not only to be expected, but actually warranted because the cops have been unfair in the past? You, sir, are a moron. If you're trying to stick up for JMU, you're just displaying how amazingly idiotic JMU's supporters are for defending this behavior. In this thread, I've read appeals to dubious statistics, venomous poorly-written rants, and now, justification based on past police misbehavior. Genius.

I am surprised as too how many people really just overlooked that one dude, who i might say doesnt like black people or has a fetish for bananas. It just shows the true beliefs of the people on this website, or those commenting at least. Some argue to keep the integrity of their school, some argue to keep their individual integrity, and others are saying how cool they are, its beyone absurd. If you dont see a problem with the banana comment, then something is wrong with you. But 'the black man' is right, at VCU a party, predominantly black, was being held. It took a while to start and people began to shake the doors. Richmond police and vcu police came and created a scene, ultimately closing the party down. Dont be blind to the ignorance around you, because you just were on this page. And to say racism doesnt exist any more!

I'm sure you will change the world when you graduate with a BA in sociology, but right now, you sound incredibly naive.

Why don't cops care about any country concerts this much? At least 75% of people at country concerts are there for the sole purpose of getting drunk(most being underage) and they don give two shits about people that even drive home! Haha silly police..... So hypocritical
