Directions

If you are driving on Southhampton towards baddock road. You will cross a 4 way stop at Yorkshire. It's approx the 4th house on the right (a one story ranch)on Southhampton.

The Madonna is in the back yard, but it is to tall you will have no problem seeing it from the road.

I like it.

I just saw it this evening. It is freaking HUGE. It towers over the house - at least two stories high. I will try and go by tomorrow with a camera. The neighbors have to hate having this thing tower over their homes.

The neighbors loved it so much they've filed a zoning complaint. search for 5521 Southampton Drive on the Fairfax County zoning complaint lookup page. Supposed "Accessory structure" violation.

The artist followed the zoning laws for outdoor structures. They can't do anything.

I live in Kings Park a few blocks from this eyesore.
According to the latest Kings Park newsletter that is distributed to the residents, this is called "Mother's Love." Also stated in this newsletter "a county inspector visited, inspected the statue and was impressed by it. As the statue is art and not a building, there are no restrictions on it like there are when you construct a shed in your yard."

So I guess that means the neighbors who live next door and in the vacinity of it can't do anything about their declining property values since this eyesore is regarded as "art" by the county. By the way, the "artist" who made it would like to sell it, he calls it "Mom"

I definitely think it is art. I guess it is exempt under First Amendment Rights. I think it is very cool, especially when it is juxtaposed with the surrounding houses. But I would absolutely hate to have to live next to it.

It's not art when it's in a neighborhood, it's a f-ing eyesore! Hey WashingTone-Locianm, notice the location in the pictures you posted, the "art" is not located in a neighborhood, it looks like a designated place for it.

"Mom" is three stories high and towers over all the homes. It's so nice to go sit in your backyard and lookover and see this piece of crap towering over you and your yard. Hopefully it will just fall down since it doesn't look like it's very secure and that will be the end of it.

It's probably painted. I would guess some kind of plaster with a wood frame inside maybe? I doubt it's made of metal.

Drove by this thing today just to see it. The head in the carport looks to a giant jesus head. Wonder when phase 2 will begin?

I feel so sorry for the neighbors that have to live next to this. I think it would give me nightmares.

I understand that it is art, but the artist needs to be respectful of the people around him.

I actually know the family that lives there. The mother is mexican (i think) but the guy that made it is definitely white...

Clearly there is no home owners association in this area.

Yes, I remember the huge, glass panelled earth statu Off Old Keene Mill Rd. My kids loved it. Wonder what that story was? The house sold and new owners took it down.

But the devout travel long distances from Texas, Minnesota and Arkansas for a chance to spend a few moments with the apparent Blessed Mother -- only to be shot down by Meredith's wife Erika if they ask to express their faith.

She said it's become her unofficial responsibility to greet the visitors, because her husband is shy. She grants permission to enter the suburban backyard and to snap photographs, but refuses to allow people to pray.

"I'm not a church. It's not for praying. It's not a cure for cancer," she said. "I'm a sociable person, but I do discourage people who come here to pray."

The largest contingent that Erika faced was a posse of 10 pilgrims who she refused to let drop down on their knees.

Common courtesy and decency would probably tell most that building a 20+ ft tall statue behind your little ass house in your densely populated neighborhood with little ass yards is not being considerate to your neighbors.

I'm all for art, and all for artistic creativity, I'm an artist, but good god man, have some consideration for others.

I'm a music producer by trade. My creativity comes through in a form that could annoy the shit out of others quite easily. I'd LOVE to be able to sit out on my deck when it's nice and work on music all day long but not everyone else enjoys listening to the same 3 min peice of music for 6 hours straight.

Out of consideration to others I built a fully soundproofed studio in my basement so that I can wallow all day long in my self-absorbed creativity without bothering anyone else.

You should too.

Just because the County can't or won't do anything about it, doesn't mean that the neighborhood can't do anything about it. Just file various civil suits against the owners of the statue.

I have spent so much time speaking to those with second rate intelligence's and a bone to chew that I need not answer here more that I have already. Get an art education, we have a great gallery here in dc. Then, just grow up. It has been up 10 yrs., no one has died from it, and one of my neighbors thinks its just great.
