If you lose your job and have to move in with relatives or friends, how can you get out of a rental lease early? Any special provisions?

Any ideas greatly appreciated.

I would tell the land lord today. You just lost you job. You wont be making any money untill you have a new job. You will be goin to live with a relative as a dependent. The land lord will like to know as soon as possible so he can rent it out soon. He may want to take you to court. You want to make sure you tell him him that you dont have any money.

Check over the terms of the lease very carefully. If the landlord takes you to court, it all falls down on what you put your signature to.

EDIT: If you don't have an asshole landlord, I'm willing to bet that they will simply keep your deposit as last month's rent and for forfeiting the lease.

If a new lessor can be found before you move or immediately thereafter your liability will be little or nothing.

Give the landlord the heads-up and they will immediately start looking for a new tenant. They cannot double-dip by making you pay rent due on the remainder of the lease if they rent the apt to another tenant.

You don't have to pay all remaining rent. The terms are defined in the specific lease agreement and typically are, pay any outstanding (aka, late) rent, and at least one extra months rent. Some places may require an extra two months rent.

Regardless, the terms are going to be defined in the lease agreement.

+1

And if you leave the place clean and in decent shape, helping the landlord find the next tenant quickly, it usually decreases your financial burden.
