They need to put Red Light Cameras at every intersection in Fairfax County. The more the merrier to stop all you fools from running Red Lights.

Easier solution - Don't run red lights. Problem solved.

Did you fellas just move here?

Northern VA (and most of this metro area) is known as a "red plus 3" zone. After the light turns red, you have 3 more seconds (or 3 more cars) to go through the intersection on the red light before it's appropriate to stop.

Obviously you haven't made many visits to the ER or visited family members there. It's also the reasons others who don't run red lights have to pay high insurance rates.

The main reason drivers run red lights here is because many traffic lights are 3 minutes long and thus they don't want to sit for the extra 3 minutes. And so they run the light.

Red light cameras have little impact on the the number of people who run red lights. Speed cameras have little impact on the number of people who speed, or the speed they are travelling. Two reasons. First is that there is no advance warning to the drivers that they better slow down or stop at that upcoming light like there would be if they saw a trooper standing there with his lidar or a police car at the intersection. Second reason is that the consequences of the wrongful act come long after the act itself. In some instances the driver doesn't even get notice until a month or more after the act. In some instances the driver never has to pay because the vehicle is owned by someone else.

The only real reason we have red light cameras and speed cameras is revenue. They are a relatively inexpensive way for localities to levy and collect fines. Rather than being a criminal penalty it is more of an after the fact tax on certain driving behavior.

If localities were serious about reducing red light running or speeding, the solution is not camera issued tickets. The solution is to have police officers swarming all over the area going nuts with issuing tickets for running red lights or speeding. To make them even more effective prohibit prepayment and force the offending drivers to appear in court the same day. Now you have massively inconvenienced the drivers rather than just hitting them in the pocketbook.

In VA you dont have to pay a summons unless delivered to you by an officer of the law. Period. On the rare occasion I get one I just throw it away. Been doing that for 4 years since the installed the one at 236 and Pickett.
