ICE: Montgomery Co. releases accused W. Springfield child molester on bond despite immigration detainer
ROCKVILLE, Md. (ABC7) — The press office for Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich (D) claims jail staff followed protocol when they released an undocumented immigrant accused of child sex abuse despite an immigration detainer on file.
The case, which ABC7 first reported Friday, follows months of mounting tension between U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the politically left-leaning county of 1.1 million residents.
On Tuesday, Luis Fredy Hernandez-Morales, 48, of West Springfield, Va., was booked at the Montgomery County Detention Center in Rockville on a charge of sex abuse of a minor. That same day, ICE lodged an immigration detainer against the Guatemalan national who is living in the U.S. illegally.
