Deadly Curve on Braddock Rd
Posted by: lsz ()
Date: March 15, 2010 07:07PM

Does anybody know why the county or VDOT hasn't bothered straightening out the curve on Braddock Rd near Chandley Farm Cir? It's very dangerous and numerous accidents have occurred there over the years.

See for yourself:

The power lines go straight but the road makes a steep angle. It's like a mountain pass; one end is 50 ft higher than the other end.

We refer to it as "Rock Hill". It's not a problem as long as you SLOW DOWN.

When's the last time there was a accident on the road? I live right by there and have never seen one. Actually school buses use it everyday. If it's that dangerous do you think they would put children's safety on the line?

I got hit on that section once as some idiot driver on the cell phone drove over into my lane. Fortunately they fixed the massive car-swallowing holes on each side so now you can at least avoid the other cars.

I think it has to do with the property lines around there- when the road was built some prick wouldn't give up that section of property. Maybe it has to do with the airport that used to exist around there.

Looks like a fun curve to take at 2am, at 70mph with a cold one in hand and then get the police report of your little adventure posted here.

EDIT: I'd be interested to see a study on which area has had more accidents - this curve or the FFX Co Pkwy/Rt. 29 interchange.

wow, a curvy road in VA, who would have imagined!

it's clearly marked 10 MPH and "SLOW" painted in big-ass letters on the roadway in both directions. so what's really dangerous, the curve in the road, or the ignorant drivers?

There are accidents there all the time. I know someone that lives close by and can attest to that. Also, the rocks stick out pretty close to the road. I know at least three people that have popped a tire on the rocks on the right as you go down the hill heading east. That part of the road is slated to run toward the dog park on Lee Road which would eliminate the curve. I don't know what the hold up is. It's definitely more than your average curve in the road.

I love the rocks sticking out by the edge of the road. That makes the starbucks holding/cell phone blabbing/soccer mommies pay attention a little better.

The airport was up at the corner of Pleasant valley, don't think it had anything to do with that.

I was just reading about the airport online. It wasn't an airport, it was just 2 grass runways owned by a private citizen. They were there until 2003 when they built a housing development. Centreville was listed as an active airfield until 2006. Are the orange balls still on the powerlines there?

a) The curve is not dangerous - I have negotiated that curve to and from work every day for the last 5 years and have never witnessed a single accident. Not only the last 5 years but I have occasionally used that stretch of Braddock Road for over 20 years - never have witnessed an accident. Twice I've seen an 53' tractor trailer get beached on the turn...

some info on the Braddock Road curve can be found here starting around pg. 49
http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/dpz/comprehensiveplan/area3/bullrun.pdf
and in other documents regarding the development of Quinn Farm/Rock Hill District Park recreation area. apparently the plan is to widen Braddock Rd to 4 lanes, and realign Old Lee Rd thru the park such that it eliminates that curve.

but why it's there in the first place may be a 200+ year old mystery.

-------------------------------------------------------
About General Braddock and His Road

To trace the history of Braddock Road, project yourself back before Captain John Smith sailed up the Potomac River in 1608 with a small party of English explorers. Indian villages lay along the waterways within what were later to become the boundaries of Fairfax County. Reminders of these native inhabitants linger today in names like Pohick, Accotink and Occoquan. Watercourses served as highways in those times. While "roads" were very few in those early days, precursors to Braddock Road can be identified on most of the earliest maps. A map drawn between 1745 and 1748 shows an old Indian trail following the general path of the present-day Braddock Road. On old maps throughout the 1700's, the road is identified as "Alexandria Road" and "Mountain Road". This road, later to be called Braddock's Road, was incorporated in the year 1752, according to the minutes of the 1752 Fairfax courthouse (Truro Vestry Book).

The road received its name during the French and Indian War when English General Edward Braddock led British and colonial troops in a disastrous expedition against the French Fort Duquesne, Con the site of the present city of Pittsburgh). In the year 1755, General Braddock accompanied military units departing from the city of Alexandria to Winchester, Virginia and then on to Fort Duquesne. Historical accounts differ as to whether General Braddock's forces indeed used the route of the present day Braddock Road, or if they used instead the "Middle Turnpike" (now Route 7).

Besides his British troops, nearly 500 Virginians were with Braddock when he started on the march, but he did not care much for these, nor for the help of the Indians. He knew nothing about fighting in the woods and thought his trained troops were worth more than any others. On July 9,1755 General Braddock's army was met near Fort Duquesne by a party of Canadians and Indians under Captain Beaujeau. The British fought bravely, but could not see anybody to shoot at, for the Canadians and Indians fought from behind trees, while the British stood in the narrow road, their bright coats excellent targets. The Virginians fought from behind trees and logs, preventing a total massacre, but Braddock would not allow his soldiers to protect themselves. They stood as if on parade. At last General Braddock himself was wounded and died within a few hours. His aide, George Washington, led away what was left of the little army.

A legend tells of General Braddock's remains being buried (and later discovered by road crews) in the middle of "his" road. Another legend tells of a cannon full of gold being buried along Braddock Road when General Braddock's troops became mired in mud as they traveled through Fairfax County on their way to Ft. Duquesne.

it just dawned on me, maybe the road was simply built that way to act as sort of a switchback. there's a 70 ft elevation difference between the bottom & top of the hill which would be a hard to climb or stop if it were a straight shot.

Quit whining. If you don't see the "SLOW" sign from far away, you're blind. It's a whole 2 feet away from the curve itself. That's PLENTY of time to slow down from 45.

You want to see a really steep hill? Check out Cherokee Ave. near Little River Turnpike in the Alexandria/Annandale area. That thing is a monster. Probably close to 100 ft.+ in elevation.

The curve is not dangerous if you don't drive like an idiot. Like others said the speed limit is well marked. If you take it at anything more than the recommended speed you are an idiot. Welcome to life that roads exist that aren't eight lanes wide in a nice, flat, straight direction.

Actually this particular ridge is called Rock Hill. Little known trivia for you all.

In the aftermath of the Union Army retreat from the Second Battle of Bull Run this very Rock Hill played a minor role in the following days. On the morning of September 1, 1862 from about 6am to 3pm the V Corps of Maj. Gen. Fitz John Porter manned outposts on Braddock Road at Flatlick Run and on Rock Hill. His patrols observed Confederate forces moving east on Route 50 (then Little River Turnpike) toward Fairfax. This observation was one of many tip-offs of the Confederate attempt to put their army between the Union army at Centreville and the defenses of Washington, DC. The Battle of Chantilly (Ox Hill) was fought later that afternoon.

Quoting from Gen. Porter's messages to Hdqrs:

"I have now outposts on the road to Gum Spring [i.e. Braddock Road @ Rock Hill], and shall locate my grand guard on that road at a suitable position this side of Flat Lick Run." Sept 1, 1863 - 6:30 a.m.

"My pickets [i.e. on Rock Hill] 'report the enemy' are coming down the Little River turnpike." Sept. 1 - ~ 2-3:00 p.m.

The Fairfax County Park Authority really should put some type of historical marker at the Quinn Farm Park to publicize the history of this hill.

I drive through there occasionally and will also begin calling it Rock Hill, firmly rejecting Dead Man's Curve. That is an old, totally non-creative name for it. There is probably some area called Dead Man's Curve somewhere in every thousand square miles of this country, it is totally overdone.

The curve is on Sunset Blvd near Beverly Hills, the place is crawling with Klansmen.

Yep, it's a hairpin turn about halfway up Mulholland Drive. It's narrow as hell and if you miss the turn (as many have done), you plunge straight down the canyon to a fiery death.

No, it's on Sunset near the UCLA campus. It's a sharp turn on 4 lanes going down hill, and the road surface is sort of angled in the opposite direction.

It's where the dude from Jan & Dean crashed his car and almost died. Hence their famous song, "Dead Man's Curve".

Although the Jan and Dean song "Dead Man's Curve" is based on a section of Sunset Blvd. (near UCLA), Mulholland Drive is the street that comes to mind to most locals when the term "Dead Man's Curve" is used in conversation, due to its hair-pin turn that has claimed many lives. The majority of "curve related" deaths occured back in the days of illegal street racing along this stretch of highway (between Laurel Canyon and Coldwater Canyon) as seen in the the movie "King of the Mountain."

Only been up there once a long time ago but remember all the roads in those hills being very windy. Will have to run this by my friends out there to see if they ever heard of this.

I bet there's a local LA forum where people are arguing about the real "Dead Man's Curve". And some of them still call it "Rock Hill".

Anyone want to know WHY it is called Rock Hill? Take a walk through the woods on the ridge beyond the dog park and "semi-soccer fields" (stay on park property of course). The entire hilltop and side slopes are covered with BOULDERS and ROCK outcroppings.

A 1984 topographic map depicts the point of interest as "Rock Hill."

That's about as close to an official nickname as there is.

The US Geological Survey has the US Board of Geographic Names whose sole purpose is to catalog and grant official names for places/things along with variants of that name (misspellings or other aliases). You can go here:

http://geonames.usgs.gov/domestic/index.html

and search "Rock Hill" for Fairfax County and this does NOT show up. Therefore Rock Hill is not an official name or an official variant of this hill. Just because it's on the topo map doesn't make it official. Nor does the lack of "Rock Hill" in the database make it unofficial. There's many, many places and features that still need to be cataloged. I spent two years there cross referencing databases along with topo maps and other resources. It's fucking endless.

If you really want to press it, you could petition that board to make an official judgement on it...but that's probably too much effort for people here. It's easier to call each other retarded.

Rock Hill or not, we know it isn't "Dead Man's Curve" because that is too dumb and overused.

the County has started calling the planned recreation area there Rock Hill District Park...
http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/parks/plandev/mparchives.htm#Q

During the Civil War, and more specifically during
the battle of Ox Hill, a rocky outcropping known as
“Rock Hill” located just north of Braddock Road in
this parcel was used as an observation outpost by
Union Forces.

Truth.

I'll always remember Hooes Road in Springfield ... not sure if anyone actually died there, but I know several that slid off the road due to ice. (cuz back in the day the wouldn't close schools unless there was a ton of snow on the ground)

I have never heard someone call this section Rock Hill. Always known as Dead Mans curve...Maybe us late 70's early 80's babies changed the name along the way. I lived in Centreville until I graduated college then moved to PWC.

I've seen the name many times on those ADC street maps, but that was back in the day.
