Gerry has been all over the place this week lobbying for the chair position, which should obviously be his. His basic message is that he has been a loyal foot soldier for the Democratic leadership his entire time in Congress and now, at age 69, it's his turn for the leadership role.

But it's not guaranteed. Carolyn Maloney of New York was installed as the acting chair when Elijah Cummings died in October, and she has indicated that she would like the job permanently.

Another Dem, Stephen Lynch of Massachusetts, also wants the job, but is considered a longshot, despite having put together an expert staff to support him in the role.

That leaves it to the House Democratic Steering Committee to make a recommendation, likely today, and the full Democratic caucus would then confirm their recommendation by vote tomorrow.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Veteran New York Rep. Carolyn Maloney was elected Wednesday to lead the powerful House Oversight and Reform Committee, the first woman to hold the job in the panel’s 92-year history.

Maloney defeated Virginia Rep. Gerry Connolly by a 133-86 vote in a secret ballot among the full Democratic caucus. She succeeds the late Rep. Elijah Cummings of Maryland, who died last month.

As Oversight chief, Maloney, 73, will play a key role in the impeachment inquiry of President Donald Trump.

The committee has a broad portfolio, including oversight of the Trump administration’s handling of the census and immigration matters, as well as investigations into Trump’s business dealings and security clearances granted to White House officials.

Connolly gets one more term to push him into his 70s, then retires.

Walkinshaw takes his place after serving two years on the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors to gain name recognition.
