Fairfax County police said a McLean resident grabbed his gun and shot at the suspected thieves driving out of his garage in his car.

Around 1:30 a.m. on Sunday (Oct.6 ), two men entered a garage in the 1400 block of Woodhurst Blvd near Wolf Trap and stole a 2006 Audi A6, police said.

The homeowner heard the garage door open, armed himself and went to investigate.

“He saw the car driving away and discharged one round from his firearm toward the car,” police said.

1. Not a random car theft. Nobody would go that far back into that neighborhood to steal a car.
2. If it was random, how did they know the keys were in car. No way they were able to jump start it between the time they opened the garage and the homeowner approached them.
3. How did they open the garage?
4. Who would steal a 13 year old car?
5. There is no mention of charges pending for discharging a firearm in a residential area (§ 18.2-280) and discharging a firearm at a fleeing individual when there is no longer a threat to your life. Castle doctrine does not apply in this case.
6. Were did that round go? His neighbor will probably find a hole somewhere odd on the outside of his home a couple of years from now.

You will probably never hear another word about this incident.

Virginia does not have a "Castle doctrine" statute. We do have common-law self-defense. Which wouldn't necessarily apply to protecting property from a fleeing suspect.
