If I recall correctly, Utah was the last state to have the firing squad as an option to lethal injection. It would never fly in this day and age, but I think if states brought back the firing squad, hanging and the electric chair, and actually put people on death row to death in a timely manner, it would eventually become a deterent. As it is now the death penalty is just life in prison, and some people don't mind that. You get sentenced to death, you have one week to get your affairs in order, write your letters, maybe have a visit from family if they can afford to come see you, then you are done.
