He was dead wrong on the 2nd RIP he was an American , you don't become a Supreme Court Justice for just hanging out at a 7-11 parking lot. He did have the sense to retire long before he died , yes when A liberal President could appoint his replacement , he was not stupid either just wrong !

Stevens was appointed by a Republican president to the U.S. Circuit Court, and was appointed by another Republican president to the Supreme Court. At the time of both appointments he was considered within the Republican mainstream. It is a sign of how far right Republicans moved and how quickly they did so that even by 1990 he was being identified as a liberal. Stevens did move to the left, but that mostly occurred after he was already being identified as a liberal justice.

The Republican Party used to have a much broader tent ideologically. If Reagan were running now, he would be a Democrat. Ala Joe Biden. And yes, the Ds have gone more liberal now. Bill Clinton was a conservative by the standard being set. Pelosi is conservative by the standard being set. We are losing the middle ground completely. It mirrors our economic inequality gap. We have to fix that or our political landscape will not get fixed. We will continue to have a Congress that is so divided that nothing gets done. Meanwhile the president wants more power to get things done (this was true under Obama and GW Bush as well).

Based on those graphics, republicans haven't moved much at all since 1980 and democrats have swung pretty far left. Obama couldn't get the nomination on the platform he ran on 6 years ago. How would Reagan be a democrat now? How has the GOP swung right? Democrats didn't even have the American flag at their convention in 2016 and had to run out and borrow some after it was pointed out on the news. And they booed God. The majority of democrat candidates for president are running on a socialist platform. I could go on and on about how the democrats have swung far to the left. Please enlighten us on how the republicans have swung far the right.

Reagan would be a Democrat now? No, this is not a correct analysis. He was strongly pro-life and actually wrote a book on the subject (Abortion and the Conscience of the Nation). He was reflexively anti-Communist, anti-Authoritarian and pro-Free Markets and most importantly pro-American.
Unlike most radical politicians on both sides these days he was willing to compromise - see Tip O'Neill - and a lot of things passed during his Presidency I'm sure he did not really favor.
I was a Reagan activist in the 1980s and I can tell you he was despised and hated with a virulent passion on the college campuses, academia and Hollywood. I was cruelly and unfairly assailed and insulted many a time as a Nazi racist and yes, the Hitler comparisons were used frequently. The mainstream media clearly loathed him but they were more circumspect than the media is these days. They hold nothing back at all in attacking Trump. But believe me, the same feelings were held about Reagan.
But unlike Trump, Reagan was a master communicator, wrote his own speeches and was a genuinely nice guy.
