Dealer ripoff $399 to replace wireless key
Posted by: No way Jose ()
Date: June 27, 2019 07:12AM

So I lost a vehicle key and the local dealer wants a ton of cash to replace and reprogram the lock system.

My question - would a dealer out in the sticks in general be able to do this at a better price? I’m willing to drive to WV or rural PA if that makes a difference.

Place in Chantilly right off Lee Road and Lee Jackson Highway would do that for 1/2 of less of that. It's very close to Red Robin.

dealer markup is high. but if you can buy a new key fob, on your own you'll save some money.

but some of the newer keys need to be paired with the car and you need the dealers computer to do that in most cases. some non dealer garages maay be able to do the work as well.

so yeah a dealer out in the sticks may have a cheaper hourly rate, but what is your time and fuel worth. maybe a two hour round trip plus 80-90 miles worth of fuel.

year make and model of the vehicle?

I wonder how it is a ripoff?

As in, say you had a product or service, where there was very little, or no competition. Or, buying your product or service was easier than buying somebody else's product or service.

Wouldn't you charge as much as you could?

As someone who sells cars, I constantly hear people say, "well, I can get this same car in (insert some far off location here) for like, $1,000 less."

I simply say, "well, you've got a choice to make. If that $1,000 is important to you, what are you doing here? If not, let's sell you a car."

Pretty simple to me.

Saves time for everybody, and sells cars to the right people.

Make your own decisions on how you want to spend your time and money. Why do you need someone else to tell you what to do?

And on the other hand, when I take my car into a small independent garage, for everything, including major stuff, when they once wrote up a $35 ticket for changing the battery out of a remote key (i was there for something else),,,

I simply said..."for real? You're gonna write a ticket for this, and I probably run $3-$5K worth or work through here a year? You sure you want to do that? The owner is gonna see me on the street one of these days, and wonder why Ive stopped coming in. You sure you want to do that? OK...do what you think you need to."

Ticket gone.

Only halfwits waste money.

A spare key can be purchased on eBay for twenty dollars.

Read your owners manual and program it yourself. It is not difficult. If you can read and comprehend at the High School level it is an easy task.

Honestly, I have done this myself with my late model Genesis where the dealer wanted hundreds I got it done for less than $30.00 by taking the time to RTFM.

I have repo'd many of those from local negroes. With a blank, the vehicle can be manually paired with the new fob using the proper sequence. It takes some time, but you can do it in your driveway and it's better than paying that kind of money to the dealer.

NISSAN MAXIMA PROXIMITY KEY - 2008-2015

If your Nissan Maxima was built in 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 or 2015 with a push button start ignition, your vehicle is using 285E3-JA02A smartkey laid down on the Intelligent Access with push-button start technology with no dash-board key reproduction interface. If you want to replicate or substitute a misplaced key, you will have to tow or drive your motor vehicle to a locksmith store or the dealer or call a mobile locksmith to your location.

But assuming you have a good key call one of the bigger locksmiths around here and ask if they can clone it. If they say yes, then call around and find one who will do it cheaper. The Locksmith in a Box kiosks at Safeway stores can do some coded keys for less than $100 but not all and it takes a couple of weeks to mail it to you.

I bought a new Toyota keybob on the internet for $40 and "programmed it" myself.

It came with instructions on how to program it. Programming went something like, insert a key into the ignition and turn it twice into the accessory mode, then press the mileage reset. On the keyfob hold the door look button for 15 seconds. The locks will click twice indicating the fob is programmed. I thought it some type of internet joke until my door locks clicked twice and the keyfob was able to unlock the doors. Amazed that's how to program a keyfob.

I then took the keyfob to a locksmith and had him cut the key for $5. The locksmith warned me that some internet keyfob are slight of track and he wouldn't be responsible it the key didn't work after it was cut. He said 90% work but there was a chance it might not.

Once it was cut I went to the car and it worked perfectly. So total cost $50 and about 1 hour of my time.

Most newer cars, especially those with proximity keys require more in depth programming. You need to hook up a laptop to the OBD port and have certain software.

Nissan are not good cars so thats the first comment. Get rid of it before your shit Renault–Nissan quits. If its a proximity key and you dont have a spare for them to clone you are gonna pay hundreds to reprogram the car and keys. All that so you can push a button to start your car. Neat huh? Dont feel bad most new cars and old mercedes are like this.

Check with Baldinos . They have been in business in NOVA the longest since 1962 and have several shops and specialists in everything with locks

Wireless ?? Yes no wires the keys have transponders in the heads that are programmed a with a code the ignition switch picks up and sends to the body control module ( a computer) and engine control module (the same), if they match the car will start and run normally if they don't the car may start then the fuel pump cuts off , both the modules have the cars VIN and the mileage so you just cant go to a junk yard to replace them new computer modules they must be flashed with scan tools with the software the manufacture makes that's very expensive in the thousands with yearly $$ costs to keep them current and working (time bombed)if the fees are not paid

The actual lock cylinder pins or wafers are coded to the cuts on the key as they were since time began with car locks this must be right to allow the cylinder to turn but then there's the computer programming off the key head transponder to allow the car to start and run

Look on the original bill of sale for key codes and any transponder codes and a dealer or locksmith can make you a replacement key, without the codes its another ball game that ups the price and Im not telling you how its done , all I will tell you is vote for President Trump in 2020 ! Other then that I can pass thru locked doors like a ghost and was a fed

Filters-out all non-MAGA females (and one or two MAGA females).
I don't lock my ride.
The replacement wooden bench seat is a constant reminder of Sunday services.
The mess the kids make is a distant memory.

Downside;

The mice chew everything to shit (and they shit everywhere)
All cabling must be armored or othrerwise protected.
The smell that hits you when you open the door is fearful
Nosey-nancies want to report you for animal cruelty (amphibian! & food supply! der!)
No remote start.

Gone in 60 Seconds ripoff

You wont find transponder codes today. The transponders are installed in the key head and have a value, the ignition switch reader sends the value to the computers, all you may find are the key code on a original bill of sale that the keys can be code cut to turn the switch or open the doors. The locksmith or dealer can then code cut a new key blank and program the new key by the transponder code that comes with a new blank key with a scan tool into the computers . No codes then they have to fit a key then program the transponder code which equals more money. Machines to code cut all keys are expensive. The "sidewinder" type groove keys that started with Mercedes, these code machines are very expensive also and all of these expensive tools have limited use compared to standard locksmith tools used on common home locks hence the cost

The first transponder codes were on Corvettes back in the 80's and they have come along way since then Never the less a car thieve can take the car truly in 60 seconds with dollies to move it sideways out of a parking space and a roll off to fill an order for a chop shop or export customer . The steering wheel lock bars are a real joke BTW Thieves can bypass them in seconds

The scan tools that cost even 700.00 are not the ones that are used to program key codes these are much more expensive.

You can do different stuff. For example, just rekey your lock at the locksmith. I had a similar problem about 3 years ago and this was actually what I did. There is no need in such expensive operation as people here propose. Just find a good locksmith. For example, when I was in the Dublin I called https://www.locksmiths365.ie/ . You can find something similar and order new key. That will cost you something like $100, I think. Or more. I don't really know what is the cost in the U.S. but I don't think that it will cost you more. It's all about the locksmith, I'm telling you.
