Even the worst places in northern Virginia are better than some of the places I have been to in southern or southwest Virginia. Plus in many parts of the state getting a job in the local post office is probably the highest you can aspire to without moving. If you have money, or a high income that isn't dependent on where you live, then there are places in Virginia that some might find more pleasant to live than northern Virginia. If you need to work there are few places that will offer a better alternative.

And they pay what it is, they make very good wages by the hour in a low cost area for housing and would not live here in this swamp and that's all there is to it.

Worst - Most apartments in Lincolnia. Been there, done that over 20 years ago, thankfully out of there long time ago. It was bad then in the mid 1990s and now worse. If you don't believe, check the listings at apartmentratings.com for zip code 22312. Outside of Roanoke and Blacksburg, I take the scenic beauty, friendliness, slower pace of life including courteous drivers on the road, and way lower cost of living especially housing, so not need as much income, in Southwest Virginia over Northern Virginia any day of the week. I visited a friend there a number of times over the years, so my view of it is not just that of a tourist.

You are living in the Nineteen Seventies. The coal economy you describe simply does not exist in far SW Virginia any more. The few mines that are still functioning are being worked by a handful of men who are highly skilled at operating heavy machinery who were probably brought in from elsewhere. If he's lucky the jobs a far SW Virginia resident could land today are working in the school system, the highway deparment, the prison or the hospital.

I have been all over SW Virginia. There are places there where the country is beautiful. I looked at buying property down there once. There are also dumps. Plus there is a reason why land costs, rent and labor costs are low. If you are looking to acquire something that is made elsewhere or that can easily be sold elsewhere, the cost in SW Virginia isn't likely to be that much less than NOVA. It can sometimes be higher. There is a reason why the cost of living climbs as you get closer to Roanoke or Blacksburg-Christiansburg.

Those are all actually good things, but there’s a reason that area sees declining populations and “brain drain”... most people looking to improve their economic status leave a soon as they can. There’s also a significant drug problem in the region and the schools are below average academically. Do your children a favor and don’t make them grow up there.
