Bipartisan Push in Congress for Answers in Park Police Shooting
June 19, 2019 at 11:45am
Sens. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) and Mark Warner (D-Va.) have joined the call for answers in the shooting of a Tysons man by U.S. Park Police in 2017.
Bijan Ghaisar, a 25-year-old, was shot on Nov. 17, 2017 by two U.S. Park Police who fired into his Jeep Grand Cherokee. Three days after the shooting, the FBI took over the investigation, but there’s been virtually no update on the case.
“We write today to once again request an update on the status of the Bijan Ghaisar investigation,” Grassley and Warner said in a joint letter to FBI Director Christopher Wray. “The FBI has failed to provide information on this investigation, which has been ongoing since November 2017, to us, our colleagues, or the public. The FBI’s slow pace and lack of transparency are weakening the trust between law enforcement and the communities they serve.”
The letter notes that family members and the press have had to rely on Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests for simple details like whether or not Ghaisar had a weapon when he was killed — which he did not, according to FOIA documents obtained by Ghaisar’s family.
The senators are not the first to call for answers. Last November, on the anniversary of the shooting, the McLean Citizens Association also issued a resolution demanding answers.
Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.) and Rep. Don Beyer (D-Va.) also pushed for answers in 2018. The Grassley and Warner letter notes the FBI has previously responded that it would not discuss an active investigation.
Grassley and Warner also sent a joint letter to Dan Smith, the acting director of the National Park Service, with questions about the agency’s policies on the use of force.
The letters to the FBI and NPS demand an update from both organizations no later than July 2.
No...that's the family's point. If it was a case of him attempting to run down a Fed LEO...and I'm not saying it isn't...why doesn't the FBI come out and own that?
Something like, "Ghaisar attempted to run down officrrs with his vehicle, this represented a clear and present danger and safety hazard to the public, our officers pursued the subject and when he failed to surrender, we skinned our smokewagons, cut him down and eliminated the threat to the public."
What shooting takes 18 months to investigate? Hell, the Warren Commission had their report on LBJ's desk 10 months after JFK was killed...
The amount of time, the lack of information and the fact that everything that does come out has to be FOIA'd instead of the FBI or someone in a position of authority to release an official report is a real problem.
What's the comp? Please tell me of another police-assisted suicide like this that after 18 months, we're no closer to closing the investigation than we were the night that it happened.
The FBI is involved because Park Police are federal, and they needed to hand over the case to another agency to avoid reviewing it internally (biases and all).
I don’t know why he ran, but if you use your vehicle as a weapon you run the risk of getting shot.
Yes...I know why the FBI was called in to handle the investigation. I don't have a problem with that and nobody else should either.
The issue is the amount of time the investigation is taking and the lack of information. Again, what other shooting has taken as long as this one to investigate?
To "push" for something or introduce a bill is nothing more than a virtue signal for these congressman. They really don't give a fuck. They just want a headline and a soundbite that makes it look like they are involved. Same thing with Pocahontas introducing bills - it's the functional equivalent of yelling out your window.
It's about nothing more than appearances.
They are all glad this muzzie won't be running over them or dealing coke to their constituents any more.

What other shootings??? You mean like the million others that are never solved!!!! The reason this one is taking so long is because no one gives a shit about a coked up rich kid that ran from police.
