A neighbor reported me to the county for adding a bathroom without a permit.
Posted by: Kings Park West homeowner. ()

Why don't people mind their own business? I got busted now they are threatening to condemn my house if I don't comply within 120 days. In order to comply I must remove the drywall on one side of the wall and take down the light fixtures, plugs and switches. I rent this house to GMU kids and they are going back to school in August. Fuck my life! The bathroom was already roughed in, I just finished it.

If you were an illegal alien who turned the basement into 6 more bedrooms, they'd look the other way and leave you alone.

Probably the herd of loud talking, loud music blaring, loud video game playing, late night door slamming, excess car parking, drunk college punks suddenly appearing next door.

He saw me getting building materials delivered and driving my truck into the backyard to load drywall and lumber scraps to haul away.

Hey OP! You broke the law and now you have to pay for your stupidity. Building codes are important and they protect our safety. Putting a bathroom in without a permit is dangerous and you can be put in jail for doing stuff like that. I have seen the fire marshall press charges against homeowners for building without a permit. I hope they lock you up.

Dangerous?

What's dangerous is having a house full of GMU post-millenial spawn thinking that it's okay, even desireable, to shit in the grass.

Dude, if ya gotta tear out your "illegal" improvements, dig a camp toilet on the property line so your lovely neighbor can be reminded of how her beneficial her interference is.

The smell will be wonderful, edpecially, in the summer heat.

If you live in Lee district the staff thinks this is OK. If you were an illegal alien who turned the basement into 6 more bedrooms, they'd look the other way and leave you alone. Even the health Dept is corrupt with this kind of stuff too.

The real reason he reported you is likely because you are renting a portion of your house. The extra people/traffic/parked cars is annoying a hell to nearby neighbors. I have had that happen next to me as well.

You are probably right. I don't live in the house, I inherited the place and I have a young couple that rents the upstairs and three GMU boys rent the basement. Most evenings during the school year there are 5 vehicles parked there, two in the driveway and three on the street plus they have visitors that park on the street.

To everyone on this thread, I am the the OP’s neighbor. Yes I turned him in. He’s a total douchebag. Rents that run down house out to a bunch of college kids who lounge around outside drinking beer, listening to loud music and have parties where all kinds of freaks attend. They park all over the street and on occasion have parked in my driveway. Once I found one passed out naked on my front porch. The “young couple” he is referring to are two gay guys who fight all the time and hung a large rainbow flag outside and have a large dog that shits on our lawn. He collects the rent and we all have to deal with the consequences. Yeah I turned him in and I’d do it again in a minute. Bastard!

I narc’d on a house full of spics. There’s at least three families and a mongrel dog in a three bedroom house. They have a fat kid who looks like Manny Delgado. The grass is a foot high with old tires and other shit in the yard. You’d figure they’d know how to cut the grass. The HOA didn’t respond so I called the zone enforcement Nazis and they issued a summons in less than two days.

To Gated and PityPoint. You sound like a pair of real assholes. You probably don’t even own or pay for the place you live in, your parents basement. We bought the house years ago and don’t want to leave for sentimental reasons. So eat shit and die you two scrotums. Renting to groups can happen in any development- upscale or not. We have one who moved to a bigger McMansion and rents to two or more families. Once they had a cleaning crew business operate from there. They have let the property go down which is a shame as the adjacent homes are meticulously maintained. Neighbors have tried via the community association and FC to force the owners to make changes and it is impossible.

Even if that were true (it's not), at least the basement in my parents house is in a nice part of Fairfax and not the shithole of rundown old piece-of-shit houses that make up Kings Park West. KPW is almost as bad as Dunn Loring.....Almost. At least you have one car garages and don't have to put up with jive-shucking carports.

A permit is a right the government takes away from you, so they can tax you and sell the right back to you.

This may come as a surprise to you but not everyone who has the means to afford what you consider a "nice home" chooses to live in one. I will take a well built home conveniently located and with good neighbors over one of your poorly constructed "nice homes" with their hell of a commute and snooty neighbors any day.

Or......

You could make a decent living and 'choose' to live in a nicely constructed, nice home with a good commute and neighbors who don't call the cops on you because you make enough money to live where you want. Or you can continue to be poor and live in a rundown shack surrounded by illegal mexicans in Kings Park West. No one who can afford to move from that slum doesn't move. Sorry. Work harder.

Permits and inspections are very important to public safety. Home modifications not compliant with the latest mechanical or building codes can cause injury and or death to residents years or even decades after the fact.
If I see a lot of work being done at a neighbors house I check to see if any permits have been pulled at that address. If permits have not been pulled I send a email to the code compliance folks at the county with pictures of the suspicious activity if possible. This is my civic duty to help my neighbors even if they are not smart enough to realize that they are being helped.

Be careful with that. it's good to have paid off assets also. Paper assets can disappear in a financial crisis.

13 years ago I bought a single family home in Burke. Several months after I moved in, the deck out back of the house gave way and I fell 17 feet down and impaled my leg with a broken timber. I'm 6'2" and weigh 185.

Upon further review, it seems the previous owner built the deck himself, never filed any paperwork and never got a permit to do so.

If you see work being done on residential property and there is no posted permit...you have a civic duty to call that in to your local authority.

He is a foreign-national who left the U.S. shortly after I bought the house. The US doesn't extradite people for this. However, my attorney has been working with the State Department and if he ever enters the US officially, he will be detained so that my attorney can serve him.

There is probably a statute of limitations on suing someone over this. I don't want to clean the guy out but, I kept my hospital bills and the bills to construct a proper deck in the hopes that I might get at least recompensed for some of that. My attorney fees are also somewhat significant but, I'm not sure those are eligible for reinbursement.

On real estate transactions I am pretty sure the SOL is 7 years. A good home inspector should have caught that but if they cant see it they cant inspect it. At least it didn't kill you. in a way you were "lucky".

(perhaps a chinese prisoner or isis member - but definitely knowledgeable of fx co gov from the inside at times). the website operator has told him "not to post or return" which are still posted - not removed, by the sysop: not because of a political leaning but for continual illegal and gross spam along with messages that are only to demoralize if not kill others. he/she plays at financial terrorism as well: continuall reporting false financial data, and fake emergency please from (fake members of the community he makes up)

WE ARE ALL SICK OF G2 POSTING FANTASIES AND HARKING IN AS ANOTHER USE WHO THINKS HE'S SMART - SOMETIMES ALL OF THE REPLIES ARE ALL HIM TALKING TO HIMSELF

IT'S NOT TRUE THE COUNTY HAS THE RIGHT TO TEAR OUT WORK DONE ON YOUR HOUSE. IF IT IS IN FACT THE BANK'S HOUSE, THAT COULD BE DIFFERENT, BUT PROBABLY NOT THERE EITHER*

a bank knows such a thing as home improvement isn't worth their time assessing. if you get kicked out, fixing the problem will be a smaller cost.

MY DAD DID THAT TO ME before i started. when i got the permit, he then pulled permission to work. did this 3x before i decided this was just another one of his ego / hate trips. total psycho

(meaning - after i had spent days planning everything and had gotten permissions and permits, that is when he'd suddenly "change his mind")

he later hired someone to fuck up work that i did and the people were not insured, hired illegal aliens, tore out good work done according to building code, and neglected building codes in the new work

very likely all just a hate trip by a somewhat devlish democrat

I once rented a room from a landlord who became a hoarder. She rented the basement out and one of the rooms unstairs, but she gradually filled the living room, the 2 additional bedrooms with all the stuff she was bringing home from yard sales. It wasn't long before she ran out of space in the house and so she went to the Herndon 7-11, hired some illegals and had them build her a big shed in the back year attached to the house. Of course, she never went through the local authorities for permission. Well, about 6 months went by before Herndon had one of their covert property inspections and they noticed the new structure on the aerial photos for the new year that wasn't there the last photo. They attempted to force her to tear it down but it was chuck full of junk from yard sales by then and she refused. After all, what are they going to do? Usine illegals meant it was not built "to code." I never found out what happened next as I moved out in 2006, but google earth still shows that illegal shed next to the house in Herndon.

Yep...I absolutely had it inspected by someone who had inspected homes for me before. As you said, keyword is apparently a GOOD home inspector...

I attended the inspection and was by his side for all of it to include the deck...

That is prepper logic. The value of paper assets can go up and down, as can the income they generate. The same is true of real estate. Besides the kind of financial crisis that would bankrupt a person with a decent sized diversified financial portfolio is going to wreak havoc with the real estate market as well. In that environment having a $1.2 million home on a half acre suburban lot in a gated community, even if paid for, isn't going to be as valuable as a home on 40 plus acres under cultivation.

I've noticed the same people that complain about "having to get permits" are the first to complain (and sue somebody) if un-permitted work is found later to be shoddy, or worse, if they get hurt or somebody gets killed by un-permitted work.

So, get a frickin' permit.

And no, don't count on contractors to "self-police".

Doesn't work-never has, never will.

Get a permit. Not that hard or expensive.

Too expensive? Then you shouldn't be adding on or building anything.

The government says you need a permit and inspection to build out a roughed in bathroom period.
We have to do exactly what the government tells us to do because it's the only way we can truly be free.

It wasn't that much different in Ole George's time. Sure you could errect a shack on your farm without the local government's permission. Putting something up on your lot in town involved dealing with the town bureaucrats. Plus errect anything and they would slap a tax on it.

County employees like me do not enforce laws but we are always on the lookout for illegal home improvements.
One of my neighbors replaced his own water heater.and I had to report him.

I cannot tell you how happy I am reading this post. A reflection of foreigners and immigrants buying houses in FFX county and then turning garages into extra rooms and then additionally renting out other rooms to 4 or 5 other residents. We really need the county to crack down on this law about single family housing.

That may be required by rule of law but it is not enforced. You can have a county code enforcement officer inspect the work if you want to but you will have to pay the permit fee. Replacement of existing heat pump or electric furnaces no longer requires a permit as well but anything with a gas line connected to it requires a permit and inspection.

I have a old beater Honda Civic and I got 3 cameras mounted in it. If I suspect anyone of doing home improvements without a permit I park the car near the suspected violators house for a few days and gather evidence. Then I demand that the county code enforcement officials move in.
The code inspectors do not want to follow the letter of the law so they have to be pushed or threatened with legal action sometimes. One inspector even told me that it was no big deal that a neighbor replaced his own toilet without a permit! I reported him to his supervisor, replacing a toilet without a permit is a danger to us all!

plumbing fixtures??? you need a permit to get a new toilet or faucet. I find that hard to believe.

A few years back my neighbor replaced a vanity in a upstairs bathroom and did a shitty job hooking up the water lines and there was a flood a week later because of it. His insurance company denied the claim because no permit was pulled. He argued with them and they ended up paying for half the damages. The dude was out like 5k. Homeowners can pull permits for their own homes, no license required.

By the way, it really is a quite environment-friendly solution. You guys can check out how those composting toilets work if you check out this weblink. And speaking of the situation, why on Earth would anyone care about someone else's toilet? Those people are just sick I think
