According to Wikipedia, it opened in 1988

That Galleria Macy's closed earlier this year, I stopped in to check out the sales. The other mall's a much much busier place and better for 'normal' shopping, that's why it's still open.

Ha! before the mall opened FCFMO said no way so Ted and Mark started throwing cash around to make it happen. Our crew stay there closing of unrented space off from the public so they wouldn't wonder into it. We stayed there 36 hours straight and finally they granted occupancy. Channel 7 covered the story.

Gotta make the arabs and persians happy, thats why. At least shopping prevents them from blowing up shit like they always do.

Tysons Galleria didn't re-brand itself as the "luxury" mall until well into the 2000s.

BUT WHY TWO MACY'S?

I like how unrented space at the Galleria was converted into auxiliary space for Maggianos and empty space behind false walls...FOR YEARS.

Also, nice failed food court concept and empty parking garages, stupid.

That Ritz Carlton does a pretty good international business, attracting the well-to-do foreign travelers coming into Dulles. I think that really helps the mall.

My best guess is Tysons Galleria was built because there was a real estate owner sitting on a large parcel of land trying to figure out what to do with it. At the time there was a trend in the country towards upscale Megamalls and he thought he could do the same thing here. They probably didn't realize that Tysons Corner Center was already adequately meeting the needs of upscale shoppers in the area. In retrospect they would have been better off holding off for a few years and then going straight to office complexes, but hindsight is 20-20

The Lerners had an interest in the property and the development of it. The Mall was built at the time when mega malls popularity was waning. After a time the Lerners sold their interest in the Mall and kept the Hotel. The area used to be what we called the pits and we used to ride out dirt bikes there. It was a local party place too and many a high school freshman lost their virginity there. Now Tysons is the next great city or something. Crazy local history.

Take a look at Tysons Fucking Boulevard between Galleria Drive and Lillian Court. WTF?

Tyson's Corner Center in the 1980s and into the 1990s wasn't particularly upscale. There was a very real opening at the time for the Galleria which for years boasted more upscale shops and restaurants, to say nothing of the Ritz-Carlton. FAO Schwarz had an amazing three level toy store there.

But back to the original mall... JCPenny was one of the anchor stores, not to mention the discount retailer Woolworth's. Spencer's, Tilt and lots of other "bubble gum" stores that attracted kids were also present. The movies theaters there that closed down were at best OK. Then with the closing of JCPenney, Tysons Corner Center took a hard pivot toward becoming an upscale mall and entertainment meca. Barnes and Noble moved in. The upscale movie theater with IMax opened, not to mention the upscale restaurants on the first floor. The arcade went bye-bye, and I think even Spencer's was gone for a few years before re-opening as a more upscale presence.

Why two Macy's so close to each other? That's an easy one.

1) Tysons Corner had Hecht's as an Anchor store
2) Tysons Galleria opened with Macy's
3) Macy's bought Hecht's and rebranded all existing stores to Macy's.
4) It was sustainable and even profitable to have two Macy's operating so close to each other before the Internet

The Galleria will be fine. It went super upscale in response to Tysons I becoming more upscale. And its in the right market for that to work. Not where I go to shop, but there's lots of fancy folk in the area that demand only the finest.

Thanks for the trip through memory lane. We non-transplants need to do our part to share the history of the area.

When was JCPenny a Tyson’s Corner tenant. The originals were Hechtz, Woodward & Lothrop and IIRC Landsberg which did not last and was replaced by Bloomingdales.

The public prayer room at Tyson's One is a real blessing.

My family and I use it nearly every weekend.

there are crosswalks on the streets there, ones with timed crosswalk lights. you can see them on google maps.

Plenty of holes in the memories and alleged hindsight of the non-transplants, many of whom were not born yet when the original Tyson's Corner Center opened. The Magic Pan had come and gone already by the time many of these ever became Mall Rats.
