Unscheduled downtime: 3/1/2010 & 4/15/2010
Posted by: Cary ()
Date: March 01, 2010 02:30PM

All,

FairfaxUnderground.com was down from 09:30am until 2:10pm today, Monday March 1st.

This outage was caused by my ISP (PullThePlug Inc. aka PRYME Technologies) null routing the IP address that the fairfaxunderground.com domain resolves to (209.9.228.66) due to an abuse complaint.

The abuse complaint was NOT in regards to any user generated posting but rather because of an arrest list entry. I have gone to great lengths to explain that the arrest list data replicated here is simply a mirror of the authoritative data provided by the Fairfax County Police Department AND not user-generated and therefore possibly libelous.

Needless to say I am more than disappointed and will likely be changing hosts. I have personally worked in the Network Abuse field for a Fortune 500 ISP and believe that this action shows great ineptitude by my current ISP to accept a third-party's complaint and take negative action against their customer without proper research.

I am currently waiting for a call back from my ISP and will expand upon this post if the results are not beneficial. Hopefully we can come to am amicable conclusion to save more downtime of changing hosts.

If anyone has any questions, suggestions or requests please let me know.

- Cary

edit by Cary: This server was again down today, 4/15/10, from 6:00pm - 7:00pm EDT for the same abuse issue. This should not reoccur.

It seems totally unprofessional for them to "pull the plug" on your server without contacting you first to resolve the issue. What a ridiculous way to conduct business.

so if you do change hosts, everything will stay the same except for your provider? they cant make you change how people post on here can they? is it possible for personal information to become "lost" or exchanged during this transfer?

thank you and best of luck.

The person must have threatened legal action or at least gone through a lawyer. Taking down a site for a single complaint is really extreme.

Thanks for noticing that. I'm in the process of making some background code changes to make floods from a single IP less disruptive and must have broken that functionality.

It has been restored, thank you.

Is it not ironic that an ISP chose a name that, in the event, has proven to be so apt?

Moreover, the doubtless unintentional aptness of the name "PullThePlug" would be unremarkable but for these ironic overtones.

Thus we see that KeepOnTruckin, that "wise old head," has ultimately touched upon a far deeper, more profound insight than the literally correct but ultimately shallow interpretation of Messrs. Gravis and Tuttle.

It is the difference between analysis as performed by a robot, or a trained monkey, versus analysis by a human being.

In short, a living analysis - open to unexpected proliferations of energy and beauty - versus a zombie analysis, that is fundamentally dead.

Is it not written: Let the dead bury their dead?

Indeed, we see here illustrated that the dead cannot help but doing so -- it is, in the end, all they are really capable of.

Meanwhile, the living among us would do well to spend as little time as possible contemplating this sad spectacle, lest we become disheartened.

How ironic, then, that the unjustly criticized, altogether aptly named poster points, with characteristically vigorous and earthy wisdom, the way forward out of this morass of dead souls, these plodding, pedantic denizens of Hell who would hinder our progress into the light:

Great work as per usual, GFSF!

This is, however, a rare moment where I'd prefer you'd kept my name out of your literature. I was not asserting that the name lacked irony (Nor was I asserting it didn't). My intentions were only to clarify the current situation to, an admittedly confused, Mr. OnTruckin.

Despite this gross misunderstanding, the egomaniac behind the name "Tuttle" is still honored to be mentioned by you...

if you understood the context then you would know that Jesus ways saying that if the man was spiritually dead then should bury his physically dead father.

That's a perfectly good interpretation of the passage within its immediate context.

I would, however, object to your implied limitation of the text to its literal meaning only. Traditionally, interpreters distinguish four different senses or levels of meaning inherent in the Scriptures: literal, allegorical, moral, and anagogical (as explained briefly here http://www.scborromeo.org/ccc/p1s1c2a3.htm#115 and here http://www.catholic.com/thisrock/2005/0504fea1sb2.asp, and in somewhat more detail here http://www.catholicmatch.com/pl/pages/articles/details.html?ra=1;article_id=679). This four-sense approach is itself derived from Scripture, for example, St. Paul's interpretation of Exodus according to its various senses in 1 Corinthians 10.

Thus, for example, just as we might properly apply the moral teaching of the Good Samaritan narrative to circumstances involving non-Samaritans, non-Levites, etc, so too the moral teaching of Luke 9:60 may be applied to illuminate both the futility and wrongheadedness of Zombie Exegesis.®

It would be unnecessary if the distinction between "ironic" and "apt" was merely semantic, but it is not. The words mean two different things.

definitions of words are not semantics. your statement was completely the opposite of what you meant.

to take it out of context to "prove" something completely different is to invent.

The parables and sayings of Jesus have always been applied metaphorically, and quite properly so. Indeed, it would be an absurd limitation on the meaning of Scripture, and render the texts largely useless, to limit them to the narrow literalistic sense you're suggesting.

As already noted, the practice of applying the non-literal meaning of Scripture is engaged in by Paul (1 Cor 10 and elsewhere), as well as Peter (1 Peter 3:20-21), and Jesus Himself (Matthew 12:1-4).

As indicated by these examples, it's not a question of taking the text out of context, or "inventing" something, but rather of applying the meaning of a particular Scriptural teaching to a new factual situation or circumstance.

Now, of course it can be argued that any given, specific application is inapt or wrong. The more cynical among us might suppose that the term Zombie Exegesis® was tongue-in-cheek. But that's a very different thing than saying such readings are per se out of bounds.

Apt 3G,
at no point was your application of the verse even remotely relevant. you are wrong and it's as simple as that.

If you think my application of the verse was wrong, that's fine.

I was more interested in addressing the question of interpretation generally, as your 11:51pm post, taken in isolation, seemed to suggest (and I may have misconstrued you here) an overly narrow approach to a rather important subject.

it's not even an opinion, it's an inescapable fact similar to how gravity is not open to interpretation.

Literary interpretation vs. scientific facts?

I will not dispute that I prefer to dwell in the chasm between black and white, often placing the burden of interpretation on the uncomfortable reader. Thus, the conclusion drawn from my statement is less a reflection of my opinions than it is a reflection of the reader's perspective.

I am, however, puzzled by the message conveyed by your AATF2 picture. What exactly is the crime that I am suspected of committing? Is my crime apathy towards the unnecessary condescension of Gravis in response to an innocent, and rather temperate, question?

Perhaps I should've picked up my weapons and battled this perceived offense by demonizing (or, rather, Zombifying) the offender(s) in a similarly condescending, yet much more poetic, manner... Perhaps I should've taken justice into my own hands, much like a lawless vigilante, disheartened by a lack of faith in "The System"...

How effective is it to battle violence with violence... or to battle "rank duplicity" with "rank duplicity"? Where does it all end?

Perhaps my subtle commentary, via Dave MacDowell's excellent painting, was insufficient in conveying my true opinion of the situation. If that's the case, then I suppose we should all be thankful to have you as a messenger of Justice, Apt 3G. BTB, Nice name

I suppose, while in my new-found confinements, I can rest easy knowing that the moral integrity of the world rests in your hands...

I think keepontrukin was saying that since you're ISP is supposed to service your needs with internet as a provider that it's quite a bit ironic that it's name is pulltheplug, and it just so happens that the plugged was pulled, so I guess that's ironic, but the real meaning is lost to me now since I've thought about this waaay too much that it is apt because it actually did. so i suppose it's apt it's name is pull the plug and fitting they did, but also ironic because it's necessary that they do provide a service and they don't, but also because it's name is pulltheplug and couldn't do anything about it.
