Is CW Woodson the “better” of the fcps schools?
Posted by: Dragic ()
Date: May 29, 2019 09:13PM

We are thinking of moving to Fairfax and are looking at two homes in different high school zones. One in The Annandale hs zone and one in Woodson. I’ve heard mixed things about Annandale but good things on Woodson. High school quality is a big selling point as we’ve got a rising freshman and rising 8th grader. I’ve also been looking at Arlington and falls Church, but the homes in Fairfax are better value.

We tend to talk in code of 'test scores' in polite company around here but it breaks down as follows:

Yost ruined that school with kiss ass parents helping him. Scores went down. Young men ruined. Whata shame.

Our school "test scores" are very good.

Only about 2% negro.

The problem with the above rankings is they are skewed by the good or terrible performance of a few students. For example Marshall on the whole is no better than Robinson, but it draws just enough students from the McLean area to bump its performance upwards. Likewise West Potomac and Annandale are somewhat similar schools with a substantial number of kids who could compete with the more successful students in any Fairfax high school, but with overall majorities of kids with various issues. These schools almost function as two high schools in the same building. Then bad as schools such as Edison and Lee are, they have still over the past decade been distinct steps up from Mount Vernon.

A better assessment reflecting the schools as a whole would be as follows:

Tier One: Highly Desirable
Langley
McLean
Oakton
Madison
Woodson

Tier Two: Not quite the top
Marshall
Chantilly
Robinson

Tier Three: Acceptable
Lake Braddock
West Springfield
Westfield
Centreville

Tier Four: Acceptable if that is the best you can afford
South Lakes
Herndon
Fairfax
South County

Tier Five: Better to avoid but good kids can still do well
West Potomac
Annandale

Tier Six: Avoid
Hayfield
Falls Church
Edison
Stuart
Lee

Tier Seven: Failed.
Mount Vernon

Maybe South County and Stuart/Justice are better classed as Tier Five.

If your kids play sports, avoid buying a house in Woodson district. Sports suck there. No matter how good they are, your kids will never be on a team even at the freshman or JV level unless they have connections to coaches through a travel league or if it’s one of the few teams that doesn’t make any cuts. The DSA Checkosky is a bully to anyone who disagrees with him. Search his name in FFX Underground.

The best players make the team and play.....PERIOD

I am sure this is from a disgruntled parent who thinks their kids are better then what they are. That happens a lot in High School sports. Let that be a lesson to these parents and kids, everyone doesn't get a participation trophy in the walks of life, it must be earned.

OP, suffice to say Woodson is a far, far better choice for any student who isn’t a gangbanger-wannabe. Only Langley or McLean would be suitable alternatives, but either will mean buying a rundown house for $1.2M+.

The above comment about WestPo being two schools in one building, well, three buildings, is true. There are still enough 22308 kids that keep scores reasonable and good teachers motivated to stay. One problem among many these days besides overcrowding and language barriers and poor previous education experiences, whew, I should have used commas, is undisciplined kids who don’t give a damn and teachers and administrators who are powerless to do anything about it.

We can’t fail a student. Even zero effort requires a grade. The thought there is the student can recover and pass the course. Many students who do nothing accumulate multiple zeros which really means they get a near passing score just for showing up. In keeping with the no fail policy, teachers click the magic quality points button and the grade changes to a passing grade. It would be better it these kids didn’t show up but you the taxpayer feed them breakfast and lunch and provide a venue for a social life. Their attendance is excellent.

The need for FCPS to maintain their graduation rate drives what is essentially a grading scandal. Some say good students can get by in any school. I say, send your kids to the best school you can afford. It’s a mad house in the lower tiers. Avoid those on the avoid list.

Well that’s a bunch of BS. The only life lesson learned is that life is unfair: It doesn’t matter how hard you try or how well qualified you are because the more well connected person will get on the team, a university admission offer (see recent news about bribes by Hollywood parents), a job offer, a promotion, and on and on. Too bad the corruption starts so early in high school sports. FCPS administration should care more about the well-being of students instead of the overblown egos of coaches and DSAs, especially in a school like Woodson that has a history of multiple suicides.

Riiiiight, because coaches don’t care about winning; they only care about playing favorites.

Yep and athletes who are caught juuling/vaping will avoid consequences if they have well connected parents, like Checkosky Jr.

Exactly, Life isn't fair, so learn to deal with it!

Just because they try hard and you think your kids are better qualified then the next person, doesn't mean they are. Most parents think their kids are way better then what they actually are anyways. That's what the coaches are hired for, to chose the best players for the team. If your kid isn't one of them, it means they were not good enough.
The coaches are not there to hand out participation trophies so you and your kid can feel better about their self worth. They are not playing favorites, they are there to win. I think the Woodson coaches do a very good job of that.

Suicide doesn't mean, that school did it, or principle on his own.

Maybe it's all about student and his mental trauma?

It's like solving Math issues. You should understand, that professor will not always be near you, helping you solving those expressions. What if using basic calculator solving huge algebra functions isn't so good idea? When I was reading this article with reviews on calculators (https://bestcalculators.net/best-printing-calculator-reviews/), I've realized how silly I was trying to solve my functions with my Android in-built calculator. After I got Casio - it became much easier.

It is crazy that WestPo and Mt Vernon are ranked so low, at least herein.

Back in my day, WestPo was basically Fort Hunt and Groveton.

Fort Hunt was one of the BEST. In the Nation. It was very small, but sent kids to ivys and west point, etc.

Even though it was small, it had top sports teams.

Mt Vernon was the same.

Groveton might have had some problems.

Many, many military families-this is before NoVA had become a real rich area, military was the main economic engine.

West Po and Mt. Vernon still draw from those same neighborhoods that made the schools great in the past. What has changed is that today when kids in those neighborhoods hit high school their parents put them in private schools if they can afford it.

True for MV but the neighborhood around the school has changed. The mansion kids are at the privates. WestPo still has enough kids from 22308 zip code to keep the place respectable. That is changing though.

^^^^ this is simply not true. Facts show that, as the population of negros and latinos in a school goes up, test scores and overall performance goes down. Good teachers leave. Good administrators leave. Parents pull their kids out and put them in private schools if they can. In many cases, they will pull up and move to get into a better school, leaving behind the poor and middle class who can't afford to do that. Classes become babysitting classes unless you're kids are in AP classes, which is where half of the remaining white and asians kids end up.

We must be honest with ourselves. Niggers ruin everything. It's just a fact.
