In Fairfax and in Oakton, is it possible to hear airplanes from Dulles taking off?

Takeoff, no, i dont think so. But in western parts of those areas next to Chantilly you might notice planes that are coming in for a landing .

It's loudest when the planes take off on runway 30. Their engines are pointed towards Fairfax. It can shake the walls of our house and we're 5 miles away.

Live near Rocky Run Middle School. Hear planes taking off all the time. The best was back when the Concorde was flying. Every Saturday morning like clockwork you would hear that son of a bitch taking off. That thing was loud.

If you move next door to an airport, you can expect to hear some planes. Try next door to the I-66 Transfer Station instead.

What's your problem? The guy asked a question and people are responding. I do not see one post in which anyone is complaining about the sound, just pointing out that they can hear it.

Somebody lives at the end of a runway. Somebody else will also if he doesn’t pay attention. Dulles is huge. Look at it on a map and then try to stay away.

Nope, sorry that was just me. Got sick of dealing with the shitty commute through Vienna so I now fly between Oakton and Tysons.

I don't hear them taking off and landing, but I can sometimes hear them flying overhead. Helicopters are more annoying though.

Actual area residents know how to bypass the AM and PM backlogs on 123.

We live about 10 miles from Dulles and we seldom hear planes ecept for certain weather coditions. If it is a little rainy and foggy we can hear planes take off occasionally. If they depart from the normal approach paths we will sometimes see them fly over and hear them land. Not much of an issue where I live. Planes seem to allign with the Rt 28 corridor.

A western approach and departure goes over my place in Fauquier County. I can hear them overhead.

IAD has some neat maps of their typical traffic patterns:

https://www.flydulles.com/iad/iad-dulles-intl-aircraft-procedures

Planes on the downwind for runways “1” don’t stray much further east than the 66/50 interchange, which you can see most afternoons if you’re sitting on 28 in Chantilly. Anything you hear west of there is going to be a flight in or out of Dulles. From Oakton and eastern Fairfax it could be an approach into DCA. I’ve noticed that DCA approaches for runway 19 seem to roughly follow Route 7 north which kind of takes them past the Merrifield/Vienna/Oakton area before they swing back around up past Tysons and Great Falls.

Take-offs and landings at DCA are done using routes that closely follow the Potomac

This is that typical runway 19 approach at DCA from one that landed earlier. Planes coming in from the south will follow along the Route 7 corridor up past Tysons, the turn on final and follow the river down. My old office was in Tysons and you’d see & hear planes doing this all day.

Depends on the prevailing winds of course, and incoming flights are at low power as they descend. Planes landing from the south obviously never go north of DCA at all.

I live near West Falls Church Metro. On really cold days, I can hear the planes taking off at IAD.
