Why is the Massey building being torn down?

The building is only 50 years old. Seems like a waste.

It’s full of asbestos, and everything that once was there is, or shortly will be, someplace else. Time for it to go.

Most of our schools are full of asbestos but they are not getting torn down. Walk in to any older schools main office and ask to see the asbestos book, they are required by law to show it to you. Asbestos is not dangerous if it is not disturbed.

They’re taking a break from destroying the slums of Falls Church.

Worked in that building, having my first job there, during high school summer breaks around 1979-1981, doing just clerical work paid minimum wage then at $3.35 working for the Fairfax County finance office. Also the AC system, though cool indoors, on a hot almost summer day like today, water would pour down from the corners of the top of the roof 12 stories up near the sidewalk entrances/exits for the building, which you had to dodge to avoid getting wet. I do not know if they ever got that fixed, with no reason to return to that building after my school summer job.

Okay, we're going back to knocking down the slums of Falls Church now. Say "So long!" to what was once West Street.

I used to drive by that building when it was under construction. I thought Hyman built it but it must have been Blake.

"In 1969, the Fairfax County Government moved its offices into the newly constructed 12-story County Governmental Center on the county's exclave in the City of Fairfax. Designed by the architectural firm of Vosbeck, Vosbeck, Kendrick and Redinger and built by Blake Construction, the building was renamed the Massey Building in March 1971 to honor the county's first county executive, Carlton C. Massey"

Fifty years is a good run. It’s become a money-pit however and doesn’t have any architectural value. The county can just consolidate everything at the Govt Center, and the city can enjoy a more beneficial use of the land.

The building was a huge middle finger by the County to the City. Good riddance...

hopefully they’ll build an extension there for the jail so they can start locking up more illegals. people are sick of all the gangbangers running loose in the streets.

Build Civil War fortifications complete with battle flags and canons. They can have weekly reenactments to attract tourists and teach them about the history of Northern Virginia.
